Motorola Photon 4G :: Initial Reboot But Came Back With Update Failed?
Oct 14, 2011
I was on Verizon with a Droid 2 when you did the 2.3.3 test a couple of weeks ago. On 10/9/2011 I moved to Sprint and bought a Photon 4G. I just updated my HEX MEID in this forum profile. My phone did the initial reboot but came back with Update Failed.Update Motorola Software says. An Update is currently being downloaded. You will be notified when the download is complete. There is no indication anything is happening. It's been this way for close to an hour now.
So I picked up 2 Photons yesterday from RadioShack. Overall, I am very impressed with the phone, however my wife's is randomly rebooting, and will not turn back on without disconnecting the battery or plugging back into the wall. I have seen a few reports of this online and was just wondering if there is a fix or if I should take it in for a trade? Kind of worried if mine will start doing this also. No SD card installed, no taskmanager, not rooted, etc
I have a stock Xoom wifi and have had it since day 1. Until the 3.2 a couple months back it worked fine... well as good as the subpar tegra2 will allow it anyway. Since the update I get regular wifi dropouts. Sometimes it happens when using the browser. I'll get a pop up that says it can't connect to the server or something like that. It isn't a regular interval. It will go 5 minutes, 30 minutes, 2 minutes, whatever. But I'm used to seeing it.
It is really evident when I try to play media via dlna from my linux server. Whether it's a HD or SD file media will stop playing using any media player (Dice, rockplayer) or any dlna client software (Upnp, BubbleUpnp, Twonky). Sometimes it happens after 30 seconds, sometimes after 5-10 seconds, other times right away. But it never makes it past a few minutes.
My router is a linksys wrt610n running dd-wrt and using both 5ghz (channel 48, n-only) and 2.4ghz bands with WPA2-AES. I've run enough test to prove it isn't the router. For my latest test I started playing an episode of the muppets show ( ) on the xoom connected on the 5ghz channel and my droid X on the 2.4 ghz channel. The xoom drops out of playing after a minutes, my X keeps playing. I switch the xoom to 2.4ghz and play the episode again. The xoom drops out again after 30 seconds. X is still going. I go upstairs and work out while watching the rest of the episode fine on my X.
While I'm streaming media I watched bandwidth monitors on the router. The droid X looks very stable with the connection rate around the same Mbps as the video file. The xoom looks like a slasher movie. It spikes to a real high rate (20mbps-ish) 2-4 times the file's rate, then it drops to about 0. It quickly spikes to about double the file's bit rate and then drops back to just above 0 again. It keeps this up until it finally just stops.
I did a device reset on saturday and all it did was annoy me as I had to re-setup everything again. The straw that finally got me was I need the device to develop an app that uses my LAN constantly and I can't since the connection isn't stable.
To summarize. Every wifi device on my network works fine (laptop, 2 droid X phones, and a printer) and my Xoom worked fine right up until I received the 3.2 update. Now it barely works.
My torch started to reboot itself very frequently today. I decided to do an update, only finding that during the process it failed. I cleared out the OS (Wipe) and tried to load a new one. But, during the process connecting to JVM, my phone always restarts failing the whole process. I am using desktop manager btw.
I've had my Photon for two weeks now and love it, but I've noticed it tend to randomly reboot itself after being removed from a car charger. Now the phone boots until it gets into the android operating system, then resets itself. This makes me VERY nervous for two reasons. I don't want to be stuk with a hone that reboots constantly, and more importantly, I sell them and don't want to have to tell everyone I've sold to that I've made a mistake. Is there a fix for this other than a hard reset?
their battery full to only discover the battery is near dead moments later... "The attery is not really dead but rather the phone is just not recognizing it", etc.., etc...,...The hardware problem that I believe is the root cause of all or most of these issues is the battery connection to the phone... People have taken their phones back for another one only to have the same issues with the new one... They have factory reset them, deleted apps, downloaded the update thinking it would fix these issues... I bought my phone 09/03/11 and within an hour of purchase it random rebooted and later that evening completely shutdown requiring a battery pull to reboot... The next day it shutdown 3 times requiring a battery pull... Usually when I just sat the phone down face up.. I believe the battery is separating enough from the contacts when in certain positions to cause these disorders... My phone never did this while recharging because it had a steady power source... That along with those who were experiencing full charge to low charge moments later led me to this conclusion... Happy to report I have for my phone at least eliminated the problem.\
THE FIX: Simply snap in your battery with the phone face down making sure its snug... Simply apply a strip of electrical tape next to the kick stand where the contacts are located... The tape should extend about a 1/4 inch either side of the battery... This secures the battery from moving in the contact area... The Micro SD a Sim card slots are at the other end of the battery and are still accessible... This back cover is not really effected and in fact it only makes it more snug... This fix has completely eliminated reboot & shutdown problems on my phone... Until Motorola factory fixes this issue, this is the best next thing... My EVO had tape all over under the hood and if you do it right it looks factory
Suddenly started having an issue, wonder if anyone else has seen it. Periodically, I'll be unable to enter text into an SMS. The keyboard will pop up, but nothing I type actually registers. The only way I've found to resolve the issue is to reboot, which only lasts a few hours.
Ever since I have had this phone (Since the first day it was available) I have never really had a great experience with the GPS on this phone. The problem is very random, basically at some point I will try to use a app that uses a GPS location like Gas Buddy and it will report a location from hours or days previous. Most of the time I can turn off the GPS and turn it on and it will work. But some times I need to reboot the phone. In addition to the that problem if I am using Google navigation, Telnav or Waze it will make a look and start navigating then states it lost GPS and it never gets it back. At that point I have to reboot the phone as nothing else will work to resolve the problem.
I have an issue with my Motorola photon 4g since I bought it (2 months old now). It may reboots when I am trying to make a phone call. It happens everyday randomly and it is getting worse. If one day I need to make an emergency, I may need to wait a few minutes for it to boot up (lol) before I can use it. I have used Palm treo phone for many year and never have any problem. I went to sprint service center and the sprint technician reset it but it still has the same problem. I will come back to Sprint again for service. FYI, I will update this post soon I have more info.
I am having problems with random connection failed on my exchange account. I first noticed this this past weekend. It keep retrying to connect and ended up draining the battery within a few hours. This has happedened on WIFI and 4G. I noticed that when I turned on 4G I got the connection failed until I turned it off. I have reboot, powered down and removed the battery. It willl work for awhile and than stop and sometimes recover if I open the email app. I'm on 45.3.6.
I was playing TuneIn Radio and attempted to open the camera but received a "camera unable to initialize" error. I rebooted and got the camera to work but not when I press TuneIn Radio it does nothing. I seems like I need to constantly reboot the phone to get it to do anything. Earlier today I was unable to receive calls when the phone was in my pocket. I would take it out and the unlock bar wouldn't respond. I ended up getting a force to close message and this repeated multiple times, although I could call out. My wife keeps suggesting I take the phone back.
i bought a photon at best buy today, carried it around for a while, installed the netflix app, brought it home, plugged it in, and after i tell it to install the system update, it downloads, i click install, and it shuts down immediately, starts itself back up, and then as soon as everything comes back up, i get a message that says update has failed. this has happened 3 times now, downloaded on wi-fi
use the photon on a non-sprint network eg. in another country.......if yes.....do you experience the Sleep of Death and Random Reboot problems.....??becaose as far as i have read the threads i think the problems are seen while connected to sprint's network or while returning to sprint's network after roaming i.e. while switching networks.......
So now I still cannot use MMS or carrier internet and the latest software update will not run, it can be downloaded but after running it 12 times it indicates update was unsuccessful. Is there anyway of reflashing the whole phone to start from scratch.
I'm not sure that i'm the only one with this issue, but I have a custom ringtone set for both my calls and my notifications. Now what happens is when i plug my phone into my pc and use it as a mass storage drive (at least I think its whats causing the problem) my ringtones automatically switch from my custom ones to the default ones. This gets to be really aggravating to have to change them both back everytime, especially since I have an additional silent ringtone for all the oter notification sounds that you cant turn off (facebook, e-mail, and plugging the device in to the PC) which may I add, is an issue within an issue but I can live with it. My files are in the internal memory, not on the SD card and in the default media/audio/notifications or ringtones.
Over the last week I've noticed sudden power loss on my Photon. It will go blank without warning. Plug it in and it will show 0%-10% battery power. Watch the screen and it will sometimes jump back up suddenly. From 10-20% to 100% before my eyes. I'm guessing it's a battery or phone issue. Don't see any other discussions about this. Planning on brining the phone in soon
With my new Photon, I am having some issues where a call will come in and have very bad crackling audio. If I hang up and call them right back, it is crystal clear. It's happened to me three or four times in two days. Do you think it's a defective unit?
I shut my Photon down and plug it in and it turns back on. I plug it in and power it down and it turns back on. I power down, remove the battery for 15 seconds, reinstall the battery and plug it in and it turns back on. No new software or apps that I'm aware of. It just started doing this today and we've had it for six months.
I need to do some testing with a UMTS femto cell. (reason behind my madness)Does anyone know if it is possible to flip the photon in a UMTS mode and then back to a normal state when done?
Occurred 3rd time in last 2 months(well spread incidents) - Photon just starts rebooting continously on its own (shuts down - loads back to the startup screens - connects to sprint - shuts down again..... loop continues non stop). During the restarts if it is un-noticed for a while the phone gets very hot. The only way to stop is to pull the battery out, after which it starts fine. Not sure what the issue is. Any thoughts? Would not prefer to do a factory reset as there is no observed pattern, all three incidents were when phone was not being used and was in the pocket. No extra apps are running generally whenever I check through the task manager - I cannot check while the phone is rebooting though.
My W385 went through a rough patch. Anyway, I flashed the firmware to it (it was displaying "init usb_bootloader" prior to the flash). Now it displays "needs initial programming" after it boots. My local Verizon "Store" said it could not be restored.
Tried to update yesterday, downloaded and tried to install. Phone reboots and I get an android guy with an exclamation mark. When phone restarts, a notification pops up saying the update was not installed.
Have tried may times in the last two weeks and everytime I get an error that the update failed to install. Below is the error logged when pushing up vol+down vol at the update screen.
I was curious to see if there was an update for it and went to its page in the market and it says its not available for my carrier?I kept getting the little yellow triangle.
I woke up today to find a download in the notification list on my Photon. It was stuck at 14% for a good amount of time, so I powered it off and on again.I came on here and found out that an update had been released so I went into my Settings About phone and tried to update the Motorola Software, and now I'm getting the message in the subject.I've tried Googling the problem, tried clearing caches, etc, but I still can't download the update manually.
I have noticed that the volume is low after last update, when i first got the phonw it was loud and clear. After the update i can hardly here the alamr anymore. My ringtones are low as well, even playing back music. Is anybody else having this issue, any suggestions?.
One more thing, i also tested it out, by going to the sprint store checking the floor model and comparing it to mine, it was way louder and didnt have the latest update.
