Motorola Photon Q 4G :: Wifi Antenna Regularly Turning Itself On To Check For Signal?

Oct 4, 2012

The wifi antenna regularly turning itself on to check for signal is a cool feature, but it opens over running applications causing the background application to freeze (most notable with my flashlight app) or run without me and not accept any input (many games). Set this to only request to connect to a network if no other apps are running.

Motorola Photon 4G :: Signal Bars Vs Signal Strength?

Jan 31, 2012

I was wondering if anyone knows what algorithm is used for the signal bars on the Photon 4G. I have found that there seems to be no correlation between the signal strength (in dBm / asu) in Settings -> About phone -> Status and the signal bars that are shown. Often the signal bars will shoot from 1 to 5 or 6 even with really low signal ( ~97 to > 100 dBm) that doesn't fluctuate.

Xperia X10 :: WiFi Keeps Turning Off Then On Again When Mobile Signal Drops

Jun 13, 2010

my x10i keeps dropping its wifi connection. it is in an "excellent" signal strength area. i can now see that is related to my poor mobile network coverage at home. when the mobile network signal drops, then the wifi turns off and the turns on again, scans and reconnects. when the mobile network connects again (after a minute or two) the wifi turns off, then on again, scans and reconnects. this cycling is happening every minute or two. which leads to lots of frustrating network errors. exact issue described below with Internet clip: [url]. things improve if i turn off 3g and set network to gsm only.

Motorola Photon 4G :: Data Not Working After PRL Update Check?

Oct 28, 2011

After I update the PRL on this phone my 3G data stops working for anywhere between 1 minute and 5 minutes. It's like the phone completely loses contact with the EVDO network for up to 5 minutes before it wakes up and finds the signal again. Never happened on previous phones. Another firmware bug? Not a big deal but thought it was worth mentioning.

Motorola Photon 4G :: Have No Signal And Can't Activate It

My kid was playing with my phone and got into one of the sub menus (*#*#4636#*#*). While in there he selected phone info>menu>select radio band. It shows "Set GSM/UMTS band with a choice of USA band (only choice). After that it went into GSM mode. I tried to make a call and got the GSM network message. I couldn"t figure how to get out of it, so I called sprint. They had me pull the battery while they did something on their end. After they had me turn it back on, but it won't provision and connect to the network. I got the msl out of them and manually entered the MIN and MDN, but I still have no signal and can't activate it.

IPhone :: Signal - Larger Antenna Has Different Frequency To The Small One

Jun 29, 2010

I'm an engineer, and a collegue of mine has a friend (tedious link I know!) who works for a mobile phone manufacturer as an engineer. His take on the whole atenna issue is the following:

1. Sticking your hand over the join between the atennae short circuits them (we all knew this!)

2. The short circuit causes the two small antennae to form one much larger one (obvious I know...bear with me!)

3. This larger antenna has a different frequency to the small one.

4. The phone detects this and switches between frequencies.

Sounds simple in practice, but apparently it takes an age for the software to switch between the two frequencies. My guess would be this is to prevent the phone from hunting between signals. This could indeed be what Apple were talking about when they mentioned that the new phone placed lower demands on the network.

For the sake of making things easy to understand, have a read through the two artciles on Wikipedia and HowStuffWorks:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cell_site

[url]

Basically, a Cell Tower has a finite number of frequencies it can use and assigns your phone to one of these frequencies. As you move around however, you'll be assigned different frequencies on different towers depending on what's available. As you can imagine, if a phone is super sensitive to variations in signal quality, it can reach a point where it jumps continuously between cell towers, placing high demand on all the switching hardware in the network. In reality, the user wouldn't notice any change in call quality if it stayed on one tower. By placing a delay in the frequency switching on the phone, your call will no longer be shuffled around towers constantly and will instead stick to one cell tower for longer, reducing the amount of juggling the network servers have to do and hence reducing dropped calls.

Here in lies the problem. When you change the length of the antenna on the phone, you cut out it's ability to see one segment of frequencies. The phone then starts looking for another available frequency. This now takes forever. Although the frequency may well be avaible, by the time it's found it, the call has been dropped as the slightly weaking signal it is expecting as you move away from the original tower has completely dissapeared.

The design of the antenna is undoubtably a fundamental design issue, which has somehow been overlooked or ignored. Let's not get into the politics of that here. What this does highlight however is that, if the delay between frequency switching is removed, reduced or in some way made smarter, the switch will be so quick, it won't have any noticeable effect on your call as it will just be another frequency switch similar to that between a towers.

Motorola Atrix 4G :: Signal Indicators Turning Grey?

The WiFi and celluar signal icons will occasionally turn grey for a minute, and then go back to blue.I thought that this meant there was a loss of connectivity, however when the icons turn grey I can still connect to the Internet and the signal bars always indicate a strong signal when this happens. Motorola Photon 4G :: Rapidly Changing Signal Dropped Calls And Very Slow Internet?

Jan 13, 2012

My phone is always changing the signal quality on it. The top of the information area will turn from green to grey to nothing over and over again. If i place or receive a call within a few minutes it drops with no record of the call. The internet is the same i will have 4g service and then it will crawl. I have to keep the phone still to maintain the signal. if i even move my hand the signal is gone.I know it is not sprint cause my wife has a diffent phone and it works perfectly she is chatting away on it all day never had a signal issue. went the spint salesman and he didnt understand why it was doing that. It dropped a call right in the store.I am on the sprint network, I have updated my profile and all the updates are complete. All the salesman suggested is that I do a factory reset and lose everything on the phone. I dont want to lose some games i paid for. If i have to do the reset is there a way to backup my games and how would i reteive them?

Motorola Photon Q 4G :: Wifi Won't Wake Up?

Sep 20, 2012

I have my device set for Wi-Fi to stay on only when plugged in (Settings > WiFi > Advanced > Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep). (see pic #1) The goal being when the device is not in use the WiFi turns off to conserve battery and when I wake up the unit it automatically turns WiFi back on, scans for networks and auto connects to my preferred WiFi networks.Everything works great until the unit sleeps. When I wake it up WiFi never connects. WiFi is set to ON when you look under Settings but when you select the WiFi menu all it says is "Searching for WiFi networks" (see pic #2). Please don't tell me that there aren't any WiFi networks within range because I'm sitting 3 feet from mine now. I also gave it a good 10 minutes to scan, and even pushed the SCAN button.

The only way I can get WiFi to actually work is to turn off the WiFi then turn it back on. Only then will it actually scan for and connect to WiFi networks (see pic #3). Everything will work as intended until the unit goes back to sleep. It's not the end of the world but it is frustrating given it's a new phone. I can make it work by cycling the WiFi off & on or by changing the settings for WiFi to always stay on (even when sleeping).I already did a factory reset and did not install any other apps, not even system app updates found in the Play/Market.

Even rebooted the router to make sure something wasn't wrong with it and other devices in the house are working just fine.
