BB Bold 9700 :: Camera Does Not Start Up?
Feb 10, 2010
For some reason my camera does not start up. I'm presented with this message:
"could not start the camera. Close other applications and try opening camera again"
Did 2 battery pulls with no success. Recently updated berryweather, but I doubt that's the problem.

Model info and OS version: Blackberry 9700 smartphone (3G,Wi-Fi) 6.0 Bundle 1965 v6.0.0.461,Platfrom 6.6.0.137)Apps: Only what comes as default as reset phoneFree space: Memory card = 1.7GB, Device memory = 27.2MBDid a battery pull fix your issue?: No I'm having a problem with my camera on my phone. The error message is 'Could not start the camera. Close other applications and try opening the camera again.'I've tried to do some research on this problem and all I've found relates to not having enough free space or the camera lense becoming loose. I've checked my free space and I think I have enough and I've tried pressing on my camera lense with no suceess. There are definitely no applications running. I've tried restoring my phone to old backups and then updating but still no luck.

Tried to play with the Gmail/Contact Lists (see other post), and the bottom line now - something is not right, every other icon in the Home folder is named Browser...I can't stand it. I want to start from scratch.
I know how to do a Security Wipe, but that's not what I need. I want to do a computer-style format and get to a like-new status as if I just took the device out of the box. Obviously I can download the newest OS and install, but how do I get all the AT&T specific software/icons?

So Verizon replaced my 3 week old 9650 because 9 out of 10 times that I went to launch the camera, the device would go into a soft reboot! Guess what - my 3-day old replacement 9650 is doing the same thing! And yes, I'm just using the new 2GB SD card that it came with.

I tried searching similar topics but could not find relevant ones. everyone seems to have no issue with swapping out sim cards on their bolds. If there is a thread already open, i do apologize. I'm really frustrated and really need my blackberry to be up and running.
I have a Bold 9700, updated to the latest OS, everything works fine. I recently had some issues with my old sim card so I went to my service provider to change it to a new one (same number, same line, same contract, just a new sim card).
As is expected I was told that when my old sim is deactivated, simply insert my new one and I can use my phone as per normal.
However, when I did this, the phone was stuck at the loading screen (the entire bar is white) for eternity (maybe 5 minutes or so) before proceeding to the homescreen. There is no "verifying security" load bar, the phone is entirely frozen, no buttons work, the touch pad does not work, it shows 3G on the top right without the blackberry sign, there is no service provider name, and once in a while the small clock loading logo appears.
I pulled the battery a couple of times and the problem persists. I called the service provider to reactivate the new sim card, they did it 3 times, same problem. I inserted the sim card into other non-blackberry phones i have and it works on all other phones. When I put back my old deactivated sim card into the 9700, the phone starts up fine within 2 - 3 minutes, "verifying security" bar as per normal, everything moves, just no service connection. When i turn on the phone without a sim card it starts up fine as well with a message at the top saying insert sim card.
I even went down to the blackberry technical service department of my service provider and they were of no help. all they could say was "we have to wipe your phone and reload the software" which I am trying to avoid and I can do myself anyways.
My phone is unlocked, comes unlocked here in singapore, I even checked using the "MEPD" method, all disabled.
This has been very frustrating, especially when I need my blackberry for work. What is wrong with my phone? How can the simple replacement of a sim card be so difficult on a blackberry when it is problem free for ANY other phone I have ever used? I am now dreading when I have to travel abroad for business and require a foreign sim card.

Just bought a new Bold 9700. I've run every kind of update possible. BlackBerry Maps IS loaded (v5.0.0). The operating system is the latest. I can see BlackBerry Maps in the add-on applications, yet there's no icon to start the application. The vendor is utterly useless when it comes to helping resolve the issue. The GPS seems to work and gives the correct location data, yet I can't find a means to start the BlackBerry Maps application.

I use my 9700 as my IP modem on T-Mobile and have been for a few months. Lately my download speeds seem to have been slowing. Is there anything that I can do, either to my laptop or my BB to speed things up? Eve Radio has begun to stop/start.

A couple weeks ago I updated my Bold 9700 to OS 6.0 Bundle 1964 - v6.0.0.461. So far, I love it except that my camera was at first quite flakey and now will not work at all. I'm geting black screen, or gives me the error 'could not start the camera. Close other applications and try opening the camera again'. The video Camera does the same; loads with grey screen and errors with 'Cannot start video camera viewfinder'.
So Far I have:
-deleted all apps shown in BB App World (Wondering if another app was trying to use Camera)
-removed the battery to reboot multiple times
-Reseated my SD card - I can view SD card through phone for picture/music so it does work
-Re-installed OS6 through Desktop software (Update my device -> View other versions -> Install)
-Rolling back to 5.0.0.xxx
-Chang the camera in tech store.
Carrier: Pelephone (Israel)
Bold 9700 OS V5.0.0.680
Free Space 69.6 MB / internal 1.6 GB Media Card.

On my Bold 9700 the camera has worked perfectly since I bought it.Now however it will not load - just hangs with the icon going round and round.Have tried re-boot, complete software update to v. 6 - nothing changes. To me it sounds like a hardware failure (well out of guarantee period sadly) but I'm posting this just in case!!

I recently (the day after it came out) bought the new Bold 9930 from Verizon. At first, the camera worked great. It worked for a few days (maybe less, hadn't used it that often) and then I started to receive the, as i've seen from other support topics, common message:
"Could not start the camera.
Close other applications and try
opening the camera again."
Well, needless to say I have checked my memory, closed all applications possible, and I have done both a soft and hard reset. I have tried reloading the software from my computer but, for some reason, it says the server is down or my network connection was lost (which it wasn't).

I seem to be having a problem with the Autofocus function. It works fine for close up pictures i.e. I press the button softly once and the camera focuses then the square goes green to say it focused, then I press again and it takes the picture fine. When I do the same for further away pictures I do the same process but the square never goes green....so the autofocus did not work. Is this normal or am I doing something wrong?
The camera settings are on normal for autofocus BTW.
