BB Bold 9700 :: Travelling Abroad - How To Connect To BIS Via Wifi
Apr 20, 2010
I will be going on vacation and to avoid the ridiculous roaming data charges, was wondering how I can connect to BIS over wifi? I have a BB data plan with my carrier (Rogers). I just want to be able to receive e-mails and use BBM when I'm connected via wifi while I'm away. I'm guessing that if I set "Data Services" to On and "While Roaming" to Off, under Mobile Network Options, this would NOT work, correct? Or am I mistaken?

i am planning on unlocking a bold 9700 for use abroad in spain with a vodafone sim card. i understand the unlocking process, but my question is whether or not the phone, which is going to be unlocked from at&t, will have full 3g functionality on vodafone's network in europe. i have heard that phones will work in europe when unlocked, but not necessarily with european 3g if they have previously been locked to at&t.

I pay £40 for unlimited texts and internet and have 900 minutes, the price of my blackberry bolt-on is included in that price.I'm going on holiday next week, was wondering if using my bbm while abroad would mean extra roaming charges when I come back. I rang 02 and they '50/50' om it.Wondering if anyone can help?
Has anyone used bbm while abroad? Did your network charge extra?Nobody seems to have a solid answer,Also whats the alternative if you are charged? Will bbm still work if i use a local sim card while on holiday?

I just got a new BB Bold 9700 from the UK and had it sent to me in Iraq. I've connected to my home wifi, which i used to do with my old BB to use the BBM service, but for some reason my new BB won't connect to the internet even though it is connected to my wifi. My laptop is connected to the internet through the wifi and there doesn't seem to be any problems with conflicting IP addresses or anything like that so i don't know why my BB won't connect to the internet. Could it be that my BB wasn't registered while it was in the UK or anything like that? Or is there another reason?

OK, this might sound like a silly Q, but when I connect my BB 9700 to my home broadband router via wi-fi, are all browsing data downloads automatically directed via the wi-fi, rather than via my carrier's network, or is there a setting somewhere that I need to change?

Like many of you , I'm having WiFi connection problems with my new BB9700.When I am out of the house, I can see my BB finding local WiFI hotspots and I can connect to them immediately. However, when I get home, my BB doesn't connect to my WiFi, returning the following error message:
Unable to Connect
Reason: Failed to obtain an IP address
I have downloaded the latest BB software (now running version 5.0.0.351), cold booted everything in sight (router, phone, coffee table and the cat) but still get the same error. My foot hurts, the cat isn't talking to me and I still cannot connect at home ! Of course my Carrier's connection works perfectly as does their outrageous fee structure... (They are 3G, or Hutchinson Telecom by another name.)My WiFi service provider (PCCW / Netvigator Hong Kong) has checked the setup of my system and reports that everything is working correctly. I can connect my PS3, my laptop, my Nokia E71 without any problem and the hotline guy can see when I connect each of them to the system.I have tried different combinations of switching the usual options on and off on the BB but still can't get a connection.

I am going on holiday next week and this will be the first time I'm taking the phone with me (except in Switzerland where it remained in flight mode throughout). I want to ensure I don't get hit with any charges on my return.
I will be using the WiFi functionality as the hotel is WiFi enabled and I will be receiving/sending texts and phone calls. However, I do not want, under any circumstances, my phone to connect to the internet using the network as the fees are astronomical. How can I ensure that the phone only ever connects via WiFi?

Last year my Verizon 9930 and this year my wife's ATT 9900 stopped working after a few days of use overseas. Under both circumstances the phones were perfectly fine for the first few days after which the keyboards became unresponsive (delayed response, not being able to unlock, reboots). Battery pulls did not change anything. Interestingly you could see the email count going up so the phones were connecting. 24 hours after retuning to the US both phones worked as if nothing happened.

I am currently on holiday in Thailand and some of the trip involves me travelling alone. Since I have been here I have no signal and cannot receive/make texts/calls. I was told by friends to turn off roaming when away in order to stop emails, facebook updates and the like coming through on my phone and therefore resulting in a large bill. I emailed my network provider Vodafone but they have responded by saying in order to receive/make texts/calls I have to have roaming switched on?! Is there any way of enabling texts/calls without having constant emails and facebook updates etc coming through? I don't understand why so many people would use Blackberry if you can't switch off these things and just use phone as standard like you can on all other makes of phone to my knowledge.

I'm going abroad and would like help with trying to stop my BB from syncing with my email accounts while I'm away. I've asked around and all people can say is to delete the email accounts from my phone and then set them up again on my return. Is there another way of stopping them from syncing up and getting the emails downloaded?

I have just been to Montreal and could not get my bold 9700 to connect to rogers 3G, it would connect to 2G. I am on contract with orange UK. My friend is on 02 UK and had no prob with rogers 3G. I looked at his phone and it had 1 or 2 more "3g bands" listed in the software version? Is this the norm. Are you with orange UK? How many bands do you have listed?

I am completely new to Blackberry and received yesterday my first Bold 9700. The problem is that I cannot connect to my wifi. I have read several post and tried the solutions but nothing works.I checked the password of my connection very carefully and used the WPA2 security setting with the correct password. I checked the MAC adresses.I have a Linsys WRT160N router with WPA2 Personal (TKIP or AES) encryption. The grey-black wifi logo appears which indicated I am connected to a wifi network but am not in a wifi coverage area (even when I am 50 cm from the router). In the wifi diagnostics page there is no ip-address or signal strength, it says "connection of device to AP has failed" (or something like that because it is in Dutch.I have no clue what to do to solve this so can anybody help me please?

I have been having issues for the last month or so with my 9700. When I get home none of my internet heavy apps or the browser work. Its not every day. Just intermittently. After multiple calls to T-Mo and verification that there were NO issues in my area (a full 3G area) they finally sent me a replacement 9700. I've had it a week and no problems...until today. Same issue. If I put my phone on 2G it seems to work ok if its on 3G/2G it won't connect to the internet at all.Anyone out there know why this could be happening? I had me first 9700 since November with zero internet connectivity issues.

I just got my Bold 9700 a few days ago, so I'm still new to the whole blackberry thing. For whatever reason my phone hasn't been able to connect to the internet all day. The weather eye app just hangs for minutes when selected. The score mobile app just says no data available, connection method BIS. Has this happened to anyone else? Are there some settings I should try changing? Should I call my carrier for help? Is this just some temporary outage?

Running 5.0.0.344 and I haven't found many glitches or faults in it if any. The only thing that hampers productivity is that my wi-fi takes about 2-3 minutes each time to connect regardless how close I am to the router. With the 8900, it would be literally 5 seconds for the wifi button to light up and be connected. Anyone can shed some light on this?

I have blackberry service on my account - I am able to access the internet but my cannot connect to blackberry internet service so I can use facebook add on, instant messenger and personal email.I have been through all settings with my service provider. Host route, manual re-setting phone, installing updated software - absolutely everything. They have even sent me two new phones, but still no joy.
Upon accessing the mobileemail.vodafone.net site, when i enter my IMEI and pin it states my account is de-activated or suspended - upon browsing the web this usually happens with phones bought from ebay/stolen phones. Note-This is a brand new handset, direct from Vodafone. My account is fine, Vodafone can see no problem and have now told me they are out of answers.
