Mar 21, 2012I can't sync my iPhone and back up my data with my computer because iTunes says to enter the passcode into my iPhone to unlock it, but I am unable to unlock and enter in my passcode on my iPhone because the screen is shattered. I have my replacement iPhone with me and I'm not going to activate it until I can sync/get the data from my broken iPhone. I have the envelope to send my broken iPhone back to the Verizon store or whatever so that's not a problem. I just can't sync my old iPhone with my computer.

I need to sync my phone to my restored / rebuilt mac, but the phone will think I am syncing to a brand new computer. How do I prevent loosing the following;

2) Contact's on my phone
3) Calenderon my phone
My iTunes library should be OK, and I'm assuming my app's will be too. If not couldn't I just download the purchases again?

I have reformatted and reinstalled itunes on the machine now and would like to be able to manage my iphone music on it again. However I am unable to do so. Checking the "manually manage music" option results in being told that to do this I will have to reformat my iphone.

It happened while I was driving for 2hrs on a highway, with the phone resting on the empty passenger seat, not touching the phone. Lost all data, all apps, all pics. Very frustrating. After 3 days of research (visiting Verizon store, calling Verizon, calling Samsung, internet research), the possible cause may the following:
About 2-3 hours before driving, the phone did a scheduled automatic update, which took more than 30 min to complete. This all happened in a signal-weak area. Tech support said, although the update completed, it may have had some flaws, and when the phone detects that, it may resort to a factory data reset to avoid greater functionality problems.
Unfortunately, the end result included functionality problems, most notably that the phone calendar only synched partially (!!) with my desktop Outlook calendar, and promptly I missed two important appointments.
When a scheduled update comes your way, make sure you backup all contacts, photos, data etc, before allowing an update to perform.

Jun 24, 2014I have noticed an issue with the Galaxy S5 that apparently only occurs with the Verizon variant. I work for a place called Wireless Advocates, we are the cell phone kiosk inside of Costco. I'm asking about this because I've had three customers come in to ask about this background data issue.
I'm not sure what triggers this issue but when I try opening up google play I get the "Background Data Disabled : Google Play Store Needs background data to be Enabled" error. It then gives you the ability to either quit or enable the data. If you press enable it takes you to the account screen in settings.
When I go to Data usage the option to "restrict background data" is greyed out. You can't even select it and it isn't checkmarked either. Just to clarify, accessing the internet and other things on the phone work perfectly fine. It's just the use of Google Play that is having issues. I called Samsung customer care and they aren't aware of this issue at all. Also note that force stopping google play, play services, removing the google accounts and adding them back and rebooting the phone haven't solved it. After the reboot the phone will appear fine and then a box that says "Restricting background data".
