Motorola Atrix 4G :: Bluetooth Audio Matrix / Routing Clumsy
May 25, 2011
The bluetooth handling on the Atrix is clumsy! It seems to make some silly assumptions. Assumptions like, if there is a Bluetooth (bt) earpiece connected, the bt earpiece must be in the person's ear -- it couldn't possibly be in a pocket, or sitting on the desk. Also it assumes that if there are multiple bt devices around You must only want to be able to use one at a time. I have three bt earpieces, and a moto roadster handsfree. I hope in the car with my earpiece in my pocket and expect to be able to press the button on the roadster to connect it/use it... Atrix assumes I should only be connected to the bt in my pocket. I have never had a more hands-free experience on any other phone ever.
On my Sony Erisson (se) phone, it seemed to very intelligently handle Becky Tripp switching/routing/preference. E.g. a phone call comes in on the se, and all I have to do is press the answer button on any of the nearby devices, and the audio is automatically router to the device I pressed the button on.... Moto? No way! You have to play the "dig around in the menus game" - ridiculous. Again, do the people who write this code, actually use it? Or are they only interested in making it "just good enough to satisfy the board members"? Stop trying to play "keep up with everyone else after the fact", and start putting effort into getting ahead of the game.
Also, on the SE, when a call comes in, there's a menu that puts every possible audio routing option on screen -- it puts the selection instantly and intelligently within reach... it asks, "Sound: Phone, Speaker, Jabra 8040, Moto Roadster, Jabra SP200, BlueAnt S4 ?" I've missed calls numerous times, because the methodology, the paradigm behind achieving user preference is so cumbersome. I cannot silence the ringer by pressing a volume key? The lack of hardware buttons needs to be addressed...

I have a 2010 Mazda Speed 3 and I hear this is a common problem. Phone calls are fine but media playback has a 3 second delay with Bluetooth in the car. I don't have this problem with other Bluetooth speakers or ear pieces. Is this delay a common problem for vehicles or is it just MY vehicle?

Very happy with my Atrix 4G (running 2.3.4) and I've invested in 3 docks: desk, car, and laptop.
I've recently started having problems when using the phone (on battery) playing audio through a bluetooth speaker. This happens with music on the phone with the default Android music player, with Audible's player (for books), and the Pandora music app. Since that's a mix of local and remote (WiFi) content it can't be a WiFi problem.
The problem does not occur when the phone is powered (via the car or laptop dock).
I've searched high and low for an auto app shutdown setting, but can't find it. BTW, Battery Mode is Performance.

im using a bell atrix and my data has been wonky. My phone will show that it is connected to h+ with the up down arows showing but my phone is unable to open any web page or do a speed test. This issue is intermittent and a phone tester will provide a temporary fix. It even drops a connection during continuous data use. I register the Host Routing Table.

Can bluetooth speakers and a bluetooth mouse not be used simultaneously? If I have music streaming to the bluetooth speakers, once I move the mouse the music stops until I'm finished moving the mouse and then starts playing again.

I just got my Atrix 2 yesterday in hopes of it replacing my iPod touch as a music and phone device.I loaded up my stuff and went to my car to test it out (obviously through the headphone jack) and I was dramatically disappointed. I went straight to Amazon to look at the price of the latest iPod model! Sounds like a muffled tape deck. There are just plain out frequencies that are muffled or missing on the Atrix 2. Does not take a good ear to hear it either. I wish I could sit down with every person who looks at this or a Motorola engineer to show them.

My new phone is correctly paired with the blurtooth in my 2011 Subaru Forester and connected and worked, but does NOT auto-connect when I restart the car, I have to go into bluetooth settings on my phone, and tap the device "Car_Media" to make a connection. My previous phone worked correctly and auto-connected when I started the car.. I've fully deleted all devices and pairings from the car and the phone and re-paired the new phone several times. NG. How do I get the Atrix to auto-connect?

How do I get in-call audio to play on my car speakers? If I plug in Car AUX to the headphone jack, in-call audio and music both play over the speakers... however if my Atrix is in the craddle, music plays over the speakers, but calls are in speaker-phone mode through the phone speakers.

When I make a normal skype to skype call I can't hear the other persons voice. Yesterday, I could hear on switching on the speaker but after doing a factory reset I can't hear any sound. Mic is working fine as the person on the other end can hear me properly. Is this a handset fault or normal with motorola ATRIX.

I'm trying to record video. I'm getting some nice image quality, but almost no sound. The audio is extremely muffled. I have my playback volume as high as it will go, and still can just barely hear anything. I can use Tango and make phone calls just fine, so it seems that my mic is working. The only time I've noticed the problem is when I'm trying to record a video. Even if the person I'm recording is standing right in front of my and speaking in a loud, clear voice, I can't hear much in the recorded video.

One thing my phone used to do flawlessly before the Gingerbread update was play music. I use Pandora, Google Music, Amazon music, etc and they all worked perfectly before the update.
Since the update listening to music has become a painful experience. Audio has become extremely glitchy to the point where its unlistenable (sputtering, skipping, etc if you are familiar with an Xrun that is how I would describe it). Usually this happens when I'm listing to music while working in other apps (ie, scrolling through a feed in tweetdeck) but it sometimes happens when playing music is the only thing I'm doing with the phone.

It isn't 100% consistent, it's about 50% consistent, but, if I plug my Atrix HD into a computer with the USB cable (which I have to do quite often since the battery isn't long-lasting), playing audio stutters about every 15 to 30 seconds. Sometimes the pause/stutter can be for 2 or 3 seconds. However, mostly it's probably only 1/2 second. Regardless, it's disconcerting to listen to music or a podcast and have it pause every few seconds.

Is there any way to route the voice directions from Ovi Maps to bluetooth headphones?
I tried the other day, with music playing from my N8 through my bluetooth headphones the voice directions were still only coming out of the handset itself!
Not much use if I'm using the satnav whilst riding a bicycle! That was one really useful thing I found about my HTC Desire - it would send the directions via the bluetooth headphones if connected, even if music was playing! It would pause the music, say the directions, then start playing again! Sadly then the battery would die before I reached my destination

I've noticed that the volume does not change at all when output is the car dock. E.g. lowering the volume does not actually decrease the volume until you get down to muting the device (which does still work). There are no problems when listening through the headphone out, but I don't wish to negate the functionality of the rather expensive Motorola Cardock. This is a major inconvenience as it generally causes an ugly distortion and could damage my car speakers.

I'm new to smartphones and since getting my ARTIX have been using it instead of an iPod for listening to music, audio books, podcasts, etc.One problem however is that when the phone locks the audio player is no longer accessible beyond the volume control that's on the side of the phone. As a result whenever I want to pause, rewind or forward what I am listening to I have to unlock the phone to access the player.I asked my kids about this and they showed me how on their iPhones they could access the audio player without unlocking the phone. So far I have been unable to figure out how to do this on my ATRIX.After searching the settings on the ATRIX I found "Settings>Location & Security Setings>Security Lock Timer (when display is off)" but noticed that Security Lock Timer switch is "Gray" and unavailable on my ATRIX.

With large movie files (greater than 500MB), there is audio distortion while playing during action sequences or loud volume dialog (does not occur with audio files or as far as I can tell smaller video files).

When I use the controls on my Motorola S305 Bluetooth headphones and Spotify such as play, pause, next song, etc. It automatically opens up the stock music app and starts playing those songs and Spotify stops playing. Is there any way to control which application the AVRCP bluetooth profile controls? I didn't have this problem on my Nexus One.

I have an issue with the Photon when it is in the car dock and I am listening to streaming audio such as Slacker or Pandora. If I use my Bluetooth headset and press the button on the headset for the voice commands, the Photon sends a very garbled voice control prompt to the headset. The prompt that says "Please wait. Please say a command" comes across extremely garbled. This does not occur if I am not streaming audio, nor does it occur over the regular phone speaker.

I use a Bluetooth headset (Best Buy brand) when watching videos on my Xoom WiFi. However, the sound is nearly a second behind the video. I have the same problem when using the bluetooth headphones with my HP notebook. I understand that Bluetooth requires a lot more processing than hard-wired headphones. However, a fast processor such as the one in the Xoom should have negligible processing delay. I suppose the headphones could contribute most of the delay, but I still find it hard to accept that delay should be so long. I use digital hearing aids that have a 32 channel digital filter. The hearing instruments have to first do an A to D conversion, then process the audio and convert it back to Analog before sending the signal to the output transducer. Yet the delay through the hearing aids is negligible. Why is the delay so long through bluetooth or are the Best Buy headphones just crap? I really like using wireless headphones. Wired headphones are always getting tangled or I forget about the wires and walk away from my notebook and either yank the headphones off my head or come very close to dragging the notebook onto the floor.

My Photon must be having Apple envy and has decided to refuse to cooperate. Unlocking can still be an occasional two minute ordeal with many whispered metaphorical condemnations of it's heritage and habits. However, my main complaint is the bluetooth audio stutter I hear on a stereo headset.
I have no problems pairing and listinening to audio on a set of bluetooth stereo headphones via my MacBookPro (or my friend's iPhone), but the Photon makes me want to kick something very hard and repeatedly. The audio stutter-pop every 1/3 second (approximatly) is beyond frustrating.
The only thing that reduces the stuttering is if I hold the phone within 3 inches (yes, 3"!) of the headset. Oddly, my mono canal-style headset has a range of about 36 feet. Both of the headsets are less than two months old, and I know that the stereo headset is up to version 3.x of the bluetooth spec. (the Photon is using bluetooth v. 2.1).

Just got the Droid 4 yesterday. Using it on Verizon's 4g network, and have discovered a really annoying issue: When playing audio across a bluetooth connection (either to a droid roadster or my 2012 chevy sonic), there are occasional skips in the music. This happens about once every 4-6 seconds, and the cutout is brief, about 1/8th of a second. It does not happen for phone calls, nor do the skips happen if I disable bluetooth and listen via the built in speaker or the headphone jack.
Wifi is disabled, and the source of the audio doesn't seem to matter. I've tried Pandora, Tune-in radio, and locally saved music, same result. It's not the network, as I just upgraded from a Samsung Droid Charge (also a 4g phone) which does not have this issue. I've unpaired from all sources, and re-paired, rebooted the phone, tried while charging / not charging, enabling gps / disabling gps, everything I can think of to isolate the issue. This phone is my in-car entertainment device, and if I can't use it for it's intended purpose, it's useless to me.

So this is a little bit of a fail, you can not use the moto actv to stream music from phone over bluetooth to it. Which means no Pandora, Slacker, Spootify.

(I have a pair of S10's and a pair of S9's. The problems below happen using either one, but let's focus on the S10's. The problem is not interference between the two). When I pair my S10-HD set to my laptop (Acer TimelineX, Windows 7 64-bit, Broadcomm Bluetooth 3.0 USB driver 6.3.0.5900, Microsoft Bluetooth Enumerator6.1.7600.16805), I have two options: 1) With Audio Sink disabled in Services (device>properties>services tab) I get great audio, but it cuts out continually (sound goes off and on) AND it is out of sync with video (in all video programs... Windows Media Player, VLC, and Silverlight); or 2) It is in sync, but is horrible sound (muffled volume, awful constant static).
This is what I have tried: All combinations of services, allow and disallow bluetooth devices to find this computer, clearing pairs and re-pairing over and over and disconnecting reconnecting and closing applications rebooting and closing and relaunching applications (all combinations for all tried scenarios), turning off ALL wireless devices in the house, never S9's and S10's on same machine, and I've tried every combination of button pressing on the headset. Bluetooth is set as the default playback device. The headset pairs perfectly with my iPhone 4 (the phone was not on during pairing or when experiencing the problem).

Any audio that I stream to bluetooth speakers (Supertooth Disco) or headphones (Jabra Halo) has a lot of static and an occasional (and very annoying) popping sound. I've tried a few different programs both streaming audio and playing directly from the SD card. I have also tried using airplane mode to see if the other radios were causing the interference. I turned off all audio effects/EQ in the control panel as well. Everything sounds great wired directly to the speakers and my old phone doesn't have the same problem over bluetooth in the same environment.
