Motorola Photon 4G :: Default Keyboard Setting Has Auto-correct Turned Off
Aug 18, 2011
I've seen a couple comments here and there re: the Phonton keyboard being "difficult", and I think those comments are completely warranted when you consider the settings Motorola / Sprint use as the phone ships. They ship it with Auto correct OFF! I came to this phone after 4+ years of blackberrying. I knew the soft keyboard was going to be an adjustment, but with the Photon it was REALLY bad out of the gate. I'd type something, see that I miss-typed it, then I'd have to select the correct word out of the list above the keyboard (assuming it had some idea of what I was after). Very tedious... So I went poking around in the settings and saw they had a auto-correct setting and it was turned OFF!
Just a suggestions for Moto, auto-correct should not automatically correct proper nouns. It is impossible to have every name in any database, so if I capitalize a word, it should just leave it alone. I have typed so many things on fb and elsewhere only to see a name of a person or place coming up something ridiculous after I put it up.
Is this a joke? How did Motorola manage to COMPLETELY leave out the Auto-correct dictionary for the keyboard? And signal strength is pathetic. The phone is great but this is sad, what good is such a well hardware'd phone when you can't get service. I live in NYC, one of Sprint's strongest regions. To date, I haven't been anywhere where I have received 4 bars of service. Since the phone can't, I manually updated the PRL, and lo and behold, it STILL is AWFUL. It's disappointing. Incredibly disappointing. I presume Motorola is fixing the auto-correct issue with an update. The signal is excusable if it's a matter of hardware, but the keyboard simply is not. For 300$, I think I paid for the stock keyboard to have auto-correct.
Is there a way to adjust/add to the auto-correct dictionary for the physical keyboard of the XPRT? On my SOLD BB9650, this was done the first time I picked up the phone. Now, I can't. This phone (while waiting for Gingerbread), would be THE BEST, if it could fix this little problem...
When im typing on the phone by itself remove the space between common symbols and letters, a clear example.. i want to mean im at some restaurant, i try to type it as "@ dogan's" but my phone as soon as i type the first letter after the blank space.. removes it.. and i end up on "@dogan's". i want to know if it is a MotoBlur issue, or a Android 2.1 (Eclair) Issue.
Ever since I have had this phone (Since the first day it was available) I have never really had a great experience with the GPS on this phone. The problem is very random, basically at some point I will try to use a app that uses a GPS location like Gas Buddy and it will report a location from hours or days previous. Most of the time I can turn off the GPS and turn it on and it will work. But some times I need to reboot the phone. In addition to the that problem if I am using Google navigation, Telnav or Waze it will make a look and start navigating then states it lost GPS and it never gets it back. At that point I have to reboot the phone as nothing else will work to resolve the problem.
know if the phone will retain the connection settings when changed from default to say, GSM only even with a restart? My previous phone also was a world phone. But whenever I restart the phone, it will always default to CDMA international mode. Wanted to confirm if Photon can retain the settings with a restart before buying one.
Anyone else's gmail not syncing automatically? I have to manually refresh (twice) before it would update. There are no settings to select autosync as an option.
I powered off my Photon trying to get it to charge faster, it had gone from 8% to 14% in 90 minutes while plugged in USB to my PC. It automatically reboots after it shuts down. Out of curiosity, I unplugged it and powered down. It stayed down. As soon as I plugged it into the USB of my PC it powered up all by itself. Kind of surprised at this behavior. I know darn well I have had it off and it stayed off when plugged into a wall outlet. I can't wait for this new battery to come from Motorola.
I looked around and couldn't find a definitive answer to this question: what's the best Network Mode setting? I've seen some claims that setting to Automatic improves 3G performance (and a short test did seem to confirm that), whereas some people have recommended Any CDMA. I was on Automatic on the way to work today and experienced spotty 3G connectivity--causative or coincidence?
I thought I was imagining this for a while but I can confirm for sure that my Photon loses track of the default number for a contact.
I wernt throught the 5 people in my dialer favorites and selected the default number i.e. work/mobile for each one. Now none of them have a default number selected. Is anyone else experiencing this? It drives me nuts. I have not been able to determine if it is my travel outside of the US and switching numbers that causes it or not. Either way I would not expect that to change my default selections.
I'm not sure that i'm the only one with this issue, but I have a custom ringtone set for both my calls and my notifications. Now what happens is when i plug my phone into my pc and use it as a mass storage drive (at least I think its whats causing the problem) my ringtones automatically switch from my custom ones to the default ones. This gets to be really aggravating to have to change them both back everytime, especially since I have an additional silent ringtone for all the oter notification sounds that you cant turn off (facebook, e-mail, and plugging the device in to the PC) which may I add, is an issue within an issue but I can live with it. My files are in the internal memory, not on the SD card and in the default media/audio/notifications or ringtones.
I'm looking for a way to either change the default text size for everything on the phone or use a pinch zoom function. I found the zoom mode in Accessability, but I dont need something like that, I just want the type fonts to be a little bigger. I know I could do that on my HTC phone, am I just missing the place to change that setting?
The phone defaults to store everything on the internal storage instead of the SD card. I called Sprint, but they did not know a way. I cannot directly access the internal memory through the USB. Is there a way to make it store everything on the SD card? For instance I shoot video and it all goes into the internal memory. The only way I can get it onto my computer is to first move it to the SD card, then I can move it to my PC.
I set up my gmail and calendar and they synced properly, but after that I had to go in to profiles and the goggle profile and push a sync to get them to update. I can't find a place in the menu to change the auto-sync settings.
I purchased my Photon at the end of September, and for the most part it has been the greatest phone I have ever used. That is, until my camera stopped working correctly! I launch the camera app, and the screen switches to landscape and the camera initializes, but it will not focus!! I have to tap the screen very hard and rapidly for it to force focus, and any situation other than bright daylight will not focus at all. The phone does not even make that little clicking noise that I think it made when going into camera mode, which I believe meant that the shutter is activating (right??).
This happened once before to me, and I took the phone to a Sprint store. The rep simply toggled the image resolution from 3mp to 5mp and back, and it worked. I then left the store feeling like a dope.....until the next week when it started happening again. Now, I've tried everything to get the camera to work again, but nothing.
I have auto-rotate checked in the display settings. When I slide out the keyboard or plug into the HD Dock the screen auto-rotates to landscape. This makes sense. However, at all other times the screen is locked in portrait. How do I enable auto rotate of the main/home screen without having to slide the keyboard out?
The default Motorola music app on the Photon took it upon itself to download the wrong album art for a number of my music tracks (which already had proper cover images to begin with). Is there any way to change the cover art, or delete the bad covers it downloaded?
I have the Motorola BT keyboard with mousepad, Photon, and HD dock.Keyboard and mouse pointer work fine when phone is in the mode mirroring the phone display, but when in Webtop, only the mousepad works. None of the other keys function. That is, I can go to text messaging with the mouse, but when I get there, can't type anything. Can go to the google search section, and get the flashing cursor, but can't type anything.
I dimmed my Xoom while reading a book in the Nook app. Ever since then, it wants to stay dim. I have repeatdly gone into the settings menu and rechecked 'auto' but it keeps reverting back.
I have been using the Photon for months but can not seem to find the area that manages when the Photon goes into silent mode.I thought it was in the custom battery mode. I set it to Custom battery saver, set the Off-peak hours to start at 10pm and end at 5 am.My alarm goes off at 5:30 am but it never rings, even though I have it set in the alarm setting to do so.
I have noticed that the phone automatically changes to silent mode around 9pm and will not auto switch back until 8 or 9am. I get fustrated and set it to ring when I first use the phone in the morning. Is there some file that I need to edit to get my time window in? This is driving me a bit nuts, lol.
how to activate the full screen keyboard on my photon while I'm using the hd dock? I have a wireless mouse, and I'm waiting for a keyboard but for some reason, I can't figure out how to bring up the full screen keyboard on the actual photon while I'm using the hd dock. I know it can be done because I saw it at the sprint store and I read of others doing it but all the searching I've done hasn't lead me to an answer. To clarify, I'm trying to figure out how to bring the keyboard up on the photon screen so I can type in web top mode until my regular keyboard arrives.
My problem is I cannot use any keyboard in Webtop mode.I have an MB855 Photon 4G with the HD Dock and a Motorola keyboard w/trackpad.I can connect to the dock fine and open the Webtop application, shows up on my TV and looks dandy. Then I turn on Bluetooth and pair the keyboard (Motorola 89507 wireless keyboard with trackpad) with the phone. It requests a numeric code which I enter on the keyboard and hit enter- presto. Now the screen on the phone changes to a clock and I can control the cursor through the trackpad on the keyboard. BUT no matter what I do the keyboard will not type letters. No keys on the keyboard appear to have any functionality. At this point I undocked the phone, then the keyboard works fine!Plug it back into the dock and -whoop- right back to no keyboard. At this point I decided to try my Logitech mouse & keyboard. I plugged in a Logitech unifying receiver into the back of the HD Dock and the screen flashed- but nothing else.
I've had this problem on and off since getting my Photon, but now I can't seem to fix it after power recycles, battery pulls, and uninstalling new apps.
When I press the microphone key on the keyboard to use voice dictation, all I see is the microphone with a red line through it and a message above that saying "Voice Initializing" and it just hangs there. I've let it do that as long as five minutes, but with no success. I can still use the Google voice search bar and the voice commands app, just can't do voice from the keyboard.
If I have auto brightness enabled, I dock my phone, it goes into bedside mode, I pull it off the dock and auto-brightness no longer works. I need to tap the auto brightness icon on the power control widget for auto brightness to work again. The power control widget will say auto brightness is enabled the whole time, but it does not work until I tap it once after I pull my DROID3 off the dock.
I use custom keyboards on my Atrix like the Gingerbread and Iphone keyboard.
As I go to the keyboard setting and set this custom keyboard as the default one, the phone has been working perfectly poping up whatever custom keyboard I defaulted for couple weeks until yesterday... the phone keep going back to the default Multi touch keyboard and won't remember the selected default keyboard for some reason..
So I noticed in Chrome the virtual keyboard doesn't load in portrait mode. Also I noticed that the qwerty keyboard is unable to capitialize letters. also function button seems to be disabled making signing into anything in chrome virtually impossible.
I have read help files about the default auto-kill option in the task manager. But it does't explicitley specify which apps can be added to the auto-kill list. I would like to way to know which of the stock apps can be added to the list. I have noticed that my battery usage for idle phone in the range of 30-35% (which I believe a bit high). May be the default apps I already have added to auto-kill are required by motoblur and hence started automatically, thus causing a loop.I have installed only 3 apps uptill now so i am sure they arn't causing this problem
