Motorola :: Adding Content To I290

I'm basically re-posting information that you can find on the internet if you look long enough.I spent 20+ hours figuring out how to put ring-tones, wallpapers, and JAVA programs on the i290.

First, you need a mini usb to usb cable. It doesn't have to be one branded for Motorola.Don't let yourself get suckered. Any cable, as long as its mini usb, will work.

Second, you need to install drivers for your phone. If you don’t know how to do this, quit while you're ahead. A Google search for Motorola i290 modem drivers should point you to them.

Third, you need content to put on your phone. Wallpapers are easy. Just make sure the resolution is 130 x 130 pixels and they're a .jpg format. I don't remember all the supported formats. Again, Google is your best friend. Ring tones take some work. First you need to obtain some songs that you want on your phone. I do not advocate illegal downloading.I'm not even sure what I'm about to show you is legal. The moderators can erase this post and ban me if they want. I'm putting the info out there, not forcing people to use it.

Now that the legal poo is out of the way, once you have your future ring tones, you need to convert them to a usable format. Supposedly the phone supports mp3. I haven't found the magic formula for this yet. I've been using wav files. Download Audacity. http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ You'll also need the Lame mp3 add-on. Open your song with Audacity. Pick out 20 seconds of the song that you want to become your ring tone. You can do a little longer, but you're dealing with very limited space on this phone. 6-7 Megabytes max, and that space is shared for ring tones, wallpapers, text messages and God knows what else.Make your 20 second clip into an mp3 by copying it to a new Audacity window and exporting it as an mp3. Don't worry about sample rate. You'll fix that in the next step. Download dbpoweramp. http://www.dbpoweramp.com/ Scroll down until you see Audio Conversion. I think it’s only a 21 day trial. After that, you’re on your own. Right click your new 20 second mp3 and select convert to. In the Converting to box, click Wave. Then highlight the radio button Compressed. Click Settings. Format PCM. Attributes 8.000kHz, 8 Bit, Mono 7kb/sec. Click OK. Then click Convert. The new file should be output to the same directory as the original. If not, search your computer for songname.wav

JAVA. www.getjar.com; www.boostapps.com (this one lets you send stuff to your phone through the buy applications menu for free.) Or you could download the .JAD files and upload then yourself.Which brings me to the last part. Loading all this stuff you have onto the phone. You need a program for that. Something like ***** MediaPAL or another similar program for IDEN phones. These programs cost money folks. Probably should have told you that sooner. I'll tell you that they cost less than the $2.99 per ringtone and wallpaper that you pay to Boost. If you’re crafty, you'll find a way to get the program. I have ***** MediaPAL.Launch your program of choice.
