BlackBerry :: Use WiFi On A Blackberry 8530 Without A Sim Card?
Jun 24, 2011
If I buy a Blackberry 8530 without a simcard, can I use WiFi to use the browser and messenger?
Or what if I have a blackberry with a sim card but the phone service is cut off, will WiFi still work?

I've been scouring the internet for solutions and can't find any help. Here goes:I have a blackberry 8820 with TMobile as my carrier. I purchased the blackberry off ebay (it was unlocked and previously used with AT&T) and it has worked for the past several months just fine.A few days ago I recieved the JVM error 102, after looking for solutions and none of them working, I just reinstalled the OS through the desktop manager (version 4.7).Now the phone is able to start up and seemingly function properly, however: the phone has reverted to its original AT&T theme and it does not recognize my SIM card. The entire GUI is different than it was previously, and it is incapable of making any calls nor connecting to the T-Mobile network. I have not loosened any screws or otherwise made any modifications, and I've no clue what to do.

I'm from Mumbai India and use a service provider "Loop Mobile". When I have my data settings on, I am able to perform all the BlackBerry functions, such as BBM, Email, etc. When I turn off data, and am on a Wifi network, I can only use the browser, There is no connection to the BlackBerry service. This problem is with all the people I know on Loop Mobile. With other users on Vodafone or Airtel, only wifi works perfectly fine. Please help! It is very expensive to use data when on International Roaming!

on my BlackBerry Curve 9320 normally I have a very good WiFi connection because my router is directly next to me. Since two days I have the problem that, when I'm on Wifi, it does not work any connection (not even the Browser); on the mobile network everything works fine. I've restarted my device many times but the problem is still there. It's a bit crazy because I got the phone only 1 month ago.

My playbook just decided not to connect to the wifi. I have my friends playbook right beside it, I checked to make sure all the settings were the same, yet it won't connect.
The bars are not illuminated.
When I goto to setup I can connect, and it appears to connect, then when I goto the main screen it is not connected. My playbook is a few months old (and I have connected to many Wifis) and I recently updated (mid-feb) to the new operating system, but it has been working fine until yesterday.

I use my wifi 24/7 then one day the radio just turn off and will not turn back on. When i select wifi under manage connections; the red 'x' remains and 'turn all connections off' greyed out. If i try turning on the wifi radio from setup wifi network i get a message saying 'Unable to to turn wifi on'. This is frustrating as my carrier data service is extremely slow.

I have had my BB for about a month. Yesterday it froze solid and is now out for repair (two to six weeks... we'll see) I now have a Curve 8530 as a loaner, which will keep me going in the mean time.
I moved the SD card, and up came all my photos, etc.
I'm on the road a lot, so don't spend much time in front of PC, so had never synced my address book (nor have I installed the desktop manager) so now I need to re-enter all my contacts info from scratch (my phone provider moved them from my old phone during purchase... that phone is now gone).
Not wanting to do this twice, I navigated to Contacts - Options - Storage Options and selected 'Media Card' instead of 'Internal Memory' so that they would follow me back to my own phone when it comes back from repair. I really should have set that option on my own phone in the first place, but didn't know any better... it would have been great if my contact data was portable on the SD card instead of locked inside the dead phone, but live and learn.
"But wait", you're thinking, "MY phone doesn't have that option. What version of Contacts is that Curve using??" so I'll sadly admit that last paragraph is fictional. More sadly, the rest of the story is not and I'm now faced with a month of frustration as I reconstruct my contact database before I either get my unfrozen phone back, or worse, get a blank replacement. At least I can cheer myself up browsing those 200 photos I snapped during the last month, as they were all safely stashed on that 16GB SDhc chip. My kingdom for those extra few kilobytes of contact info...
Some time in the future I hope that RIM will mandate this option for ALL their applications. It is great to say that the application data is "securey stored inside the phone" and I understand there are security issues with having data exposed on removable media. But to not have at least the OPTION of keeping MY data portable is not acceptable. Provide an admin lock-out for the option for corporate/enterprise customers, sure. They have the infrastructure for backing up their users' configurations. But please allow private users like me, who rarely (or never) sync with DM, have more control of where things are stored.

We have developed a WIFI marketing unit which stores locallised content on a linux PC and serves it by WIFI.Basically, you connect to the unit by WIFI and surf the information, and there is no internet as such so you cant go onto Google or anything. The unit has a 3G connection simply for us to update content and download usage stats. It works fine with Android and Iphone etc, but seems to struggle with Blackberry's. We can use a WIFI key if needed but would prefer not to.Does anyone know the best way to do this, do we need a WIFI key and if so, is it WEP, WPA, WPA2 etc etc.Or can we remove the WIFI key completely. From what I've seen, it appears that the blackberry favours the mobile connection over WIFI to get to the web, whereas, if I turn off mobile connection, it then connects fiune through the WIFI and shows the content

I purchased recently a second hand Blackberry Playbook and the first thing I did was a software update. After the update the device booted normally but it couldn't detect any of WiFi (802.11b/g) access points that I have home and in my work (3 different hotspots in total). I searched on the support site for the problem and I saw that some others have faced the same issue and they fix it by doing a full wipe out (factory reset). So I tried the same with no success, now my device boots and I am unable to complete the first registration that can only be done via WiFi. I also tried to re-update the device several times using the latest Desktop Software, but the result is always the same no Wifi detected.I contacted the Greek subsidiary of the store that the device purchased and they told me that I must contact with RIM central branch because the RIM support policy about this product (Playbook) is that customer gets support directly from them. The store that the Playbook originally purchased is Expansys France and I have scanned the invoice as evidence of legal purchase and valid warranty. Please advice me how can I get support for the product because I sent an email and the reply tells me that I need to submit BlackBerry inquiry via approved channel Blackberry Playbook wifi problem.

On a embedded PC I've configued a hotspot for mobile devices - any device can connect to WiFi it provides and use it to access websites. However one of our customers told us that he can't use it with Blackberry.Only funcionality we need is website access, no need for UMA or any other extra BB-specific features.First problem we had was that BB couldn't associate to hotspot at all. That is fixed now by disabling 'wmm' on hotspot.Problem that stays open is accessing websites. The browser is set to 'hotspot mode' but whenever i enter url in a browser the request times out. The gateway is correct, DNS-server (gateway itself) is correct too, IP address is assigned correct.I dug into it and i can see that most of DNS queries don't reach the hotspot at all. When i try DNS test utility results are the same - most DNS queries don't reach hotspot. I can see BB exchanging ARP 'who has' APR 'is at' packets and thats all.Ping to my hotspot works when i chose 'WiFi -gateway' (however it responds only once after ~1600ms, later requests time-out). When I try to ping it via IP all request time out (however i can see in logs that ping reaches my hotspot and it responds immediately).Hotspot config is atheros (2413) based wifi card in ap mode. Driver is ath5k from 2.6.38 kernel. I use hostapd to create wifi network and dnsmasq as DHCP/DNS server.
