BB Curve :: Turn Off All Connections (Mobile Network Sprint & Wi-Fi), Lose All GPS Connections As Well?

Apr 13, 2011

I've got Googe maps, BTC Mapper, and Endomondo on my phone. They all use GPS to track you, plot where you have been, and save tracks for you to chek out later. They work nice. I use them a lot for walking, running, and bicycling. My question though, is the GPS actually using the GPS satellites in orbit, or is it using triangulation off several cell towers to get my location? If it is using GPS satellites, why is it that if I turn off all connections (Mobile Network Sprint & Wi-Fi), I lose all GPS connections as well? If this device is atually getting signals from the satellites, what difference does it make if I am in a cell coverage area or not?I've read that, yes, the location is retrieved from the satellites, but to plot it on the maps takes the cell connection. If that is the case, is there an app that just logs longitude and latitude every second and stores it in a file that can be dumped to a map at a later time?

The reason I bring all this up is because, later this summer, I plan to go on a 2-week long cruise that will visit about a dozen different Carribean islands and I'd like to track my location. At sea, I won't be able to pick up a cell signal. Will the GPS tracking apps like google, still work? Even if I can't get a cell signal, my GPS should still be able to pick up satellite signals

BB Bold 9700 :: Turn Off / On Connections Before I'm Able To Send Text Messages

May 16, 2010

I have my phone set up to auto off and on each day. I also have run a Wifi at my house, so my phone is always using this connection first. Most times when I try to send my first message of the day it hangs until I shut down all connections. I do notice that the UMA isnt connected. I see the 5 bars with wifi. After a on/off cycle the UMA and wifi come back on. The wifi signal is strong at 2-3 lines always. Its like the 3G and UMA are fighting one another and no one wins. Am I missing something?

BB Curve 8900 :: GPS Unable To Get Connections

Apr 13, 2010

Ever since I got my T-Mo 8900 last September I have never really gotten the GPS to work quite right. When I use the maps or apps that use the GPS I never can get a connection, so I assume by default it locates me my cell towers (which always always points my locations incorrectly by a half mile or so). Is there something I am missing in the setup or options. Or is this just a result of crappy GPS capabilities on the 8900's part?

BB Storm 9500 :: 9530 Slow UDP Connections

Mar 4, 2010

I am building a client/server UDP application similar to the UDP demo that comes with the 9530 simulator: http://www.blackberry.com/go/udpsample. This sample works fine. However, in my application, the simulator sends a UDP message to the server and it is handled just fine, but when the server sends a message beck to the simulator, there is a problem. As far as I can see, the UDP datagram is transmitted by the server, but the simulator/client gets stuck on the "[UDPDatagramConnection].receive([Datagram])" command. It sits there on that command for about 10 seconds, and then must time out or something. It then responds with the correctly received message, and everything is fine. As far as I can see, no new information was received at the end of that 10-second delay, so I guess it's not the server's problem. So everything works fine, except for that 10-second delay. Of course, since the source code for this function is not provided by RIM, it's impossible to get the debugger in there to see what it's getting stuck on. Are there any known issues with UDP connections being slow to receive an incoming connection? Again, my setup is very similar to the one in the RIM-provided example.
