BB Curve 8500 :: Do Need Service Plan To Accesss Internet?
Jan 7, 2010I recently purchased a curve 8520 for christmas. I went through the process of setting up the wireless but when I go to Manage Connections in the home menu I'm getting a dash (-) next to the wifi connection. It is connectiiong to my wireless network at home but when I go on the browser I get "An error occurred while fetching the reqested page". Also, when I go to Host Routing Table they're not entries. The mobile network I'm using is Digicel but I'm not on any blackberry service plan. Is it that the only way I can access my wirelss at home (or anywhere for that matter) is if I join the service plan? If that's not the case, then how do I get internet access using the wifi connection?

Oct 9, 2011when i click on my facebook app it says ' you are currently on a service plan that does not support this application. if you want to use this application, please conact your service provider to upgrade your data plan' but i am on pay monthly and can get onto the internet jus not the facebook app. Also my phone will not connect to any WIFI at all.

Jan 4, 2010I have the 8520, and have no data plan with my carrier in my post payment plan, i thought , since i have wi-fi at home, office and tons of hot spots. I can use my BB to access the web using free wi-fi as i have been doing with my last 4 smartphones.Big mistake. i have been charged 55 us last month, for data transfer use , i ran to my planŽs assistance office ( telcel in Mexico ), and the answer i got was. you have to get a data plan from us to be able to use wi-fi ( obviuosly i stared at her , just nodding my head ).There is no point in having a device that has acces to wi fi networks , if i cant access the wi fi network without you data plan, so i got the lady to bring the tech guy. His response was...naaahhh...it will access the wi fi. but weŽll charge u anyway. you need to disable the network from the phone and only leave the wi fi option on so you can access without any other charge, but this will leave you with no phone connection.
Is this real? did i just spend 399us in a gadget that has wi fi capabilities but will not be able to get on any wi fi connection form home or work, without being charged for data transmission over my cell providers network?cmon this sounds as stupid as it does in my head ? i would be really disapointed if i just left my old Nokia E71 SPhone, for this beautiful BB Curve 8520 THAT DOES NOT CONNECT TO THE WI Fi.

When I click on the "apps" section everything is visible but dithered out so that I can't add new apps or rearrange the old ones.

Jun 25, 2012My brother passed on his old iPhone 3GS so my kids could use it as an iPod Touch equivalent, but I'm having trouble activating it. First, I did read the main support article on this:

But it says you either need the SIM card from your new iPHone or the original SIM card.
1. My own iPHone 4S has a microSIM that won't fit in the 3GS's SIM card slot.
2. The 3GS does not have its original SIM card (my brother doesn't have it, thinks the carrier took it back when he upgraded). I tried inserting a SIM card from a prepaid phone my kids use for emergencies but the 3GS would not activate with that SIM card installed. Right now the 3GS is stuck unable to activate.

Nov 6, 2012I bought my blakcberry torch a couple of days ago, since then i have signed up for a blackberry ID and registered with my Wifi, this has all worked fine. However, for some reason whenever i go on setup and then email accounts it always says "your device is having problems connecting to the server" whats this all about? Also, whenever i go on BBM and try to invite a friend it says "waitng for authorisation" i'm on contract with BSI included. Additionally i know my friend has not declined my invite cause he said my invite hasnt come through (only been 3 days). Help is needed on this too! And finally, if i go anywhere without wifi i can't access the internet because it says "my service plan doesn't approve internet" literally wtf, blackberry's a far too complicated?!

Jun 25, 2012Finally the ICS update has become available for my phone (SI 1253-7151) -PC Companion pops up a message about the new update. If I click "Update", PC Companion starts downloading the update, finishes the download and says "Preparing computer for program updates".
Then it proceeds to "Unable to install or start components for update of phone system" and my phone does not get updated.Then I have tried Sony Update Service, but now I can't even start it properly; the program crashes right after opening it. It just says "Synchronizing" and then "An unexpected error has occured. The application will shut down." so I never get any possibility to see why.Again, my phone does not get updated. Since both programs crash there must be a serious problem with the downloaded files (and they're probably shared between the programs?).Apparently I'm not the only one experiencing it; I can see in a Norwegian forum that other people have the same problem - and in the original thread that you have hidden (!).
PS. The original thread was not mine; I just replied to it since I had the exact same problem. Regarding the new "moderation strategy" I believe that the above question is not rude, it's not spam - and reposting the question is necessary when the issue has not been resolved and the original thread has disappeared..

Oct 22, 2012I received a message on my XPeria Mini Pro about the 4.1.B.0.587 Update. In fact, I can not install it. When I start the PC Companion software, it finds the connected Phone. Then I click on update. In the following window I click "Accept" and then the software should prepare the PC for the update. But after one second it stops and returns to Start without any comment. When I start Sony Mobile Update Service then it checks for new updates. As soon as the check is over, the program terminates without any comment. Is there a third way to upgrade?

The top right hand corner bar never moves to "confirm" it just stays at "connect". Can anyone kindly help me? Feb 27, 2010I bought a BlackBerry Curve for $10 online through the AT&T website. I ONLY need a phone for phone calls and text messaging. When I called to activate my new SIM card they charged me for a Data Plan ($30 monthly). I learned that I could turn off the Data Usage on the phone itself so that the network does not recognize my phone as a Smartphone and incur Data usage charges. I then called AT&T back to cancel the Data Plan. This was not easy and I insisted that I was using my old Motorola Razor again; otherwise they would not reverse the Data Plan charges.
Since then, my phone has not been able to send or receive any SMS text messages. I also get no error messages whatsoever. This feature had previously worked. Now it doesn't. When I send a text message, it appears to have gone through, but my text recipient indicates otherwise. I also tried to send a text message with my mom's Nokia, but with MY SIM card in it and vise versa; and neither options worked as well.
What is going on? I have been on many forums and can't figure this out. I'm guessing that this is a carrier issue; however, because I got the Data Plan reversed and was adamant about not using a BlackBerry, I can't exactly call them to complain.

Jan 18, 2010I have a Nextel phone, just got an 8350i curve. Switched the SIM card and calls work and DC, but I can't text cause I have heard you need a BB data plan. I have a data add on. The Nextel Online is Messaging involved with Text. The second has to do with data. Is it possible that I could just flash the phone like how they do for Boost and I will be able to text??? Cause what a phone if you can't text.
