Nokia Navigation :: Positioning Server N8 Assisted GPS Fail?
Oct 2, 2011
After upgrading my phone to Anna, I am no longer getting GPS locks under AGPS at all. Previously, I had no trouble acquiring these locks.I did look at positioning methods and chose the right home network settings (set to NO) and I have created new server supl.google.com in addition to supl.nokia.com but to no avail... There is no choice for selecting an access point for these positioning servers, so I'm not sure if the data requests for positions are getting through at all...I installed LeGPSData and can see that there are 10-12 satellites in view but none in use.. The GPS locking problem seems to affect Ovi Maps, Google Maps or Viewranger... basically any tool that depends on Nokia's AGPS implementation......

I keep getting the following message when using the new Ovi Maps Navigation - Connection to network positioning server required. Costs may be incurred. If I say no then I can continue and get the free navigation as advertised, but is there any way of stopping this message coming up?

I have a question concerning the different positioning methods that are offered by Nokia Belle and which can be selected in settings>application settings>positioning>positioning methods. So far I have only used "Integrated GPS", because I am frequently travelling abroad and would like to avoid using a mobile data connection. However, I still wonder if all the other options actually require a connection to the internet. I know that A-GPS needs a connection, but what about the WLAN/Network option? Does the device really connect to an available WLAN network, or does it only search for Networks without a connection? And what does the last option on the list, "Network-based" mean (I am not sure if this is the proper English translation)? I tried to choose only this method and disabled all the other ones (also integrated GPS), but then the device couldn't find the position.

The compass is not working on my Nokia C6-01.I cant calibrate it. Even other compass apps dont work. Nokia care staff reinstalled firmware, but the issue was not solved. They said it is a sensor issue and they will check whether this is in touch panel or the board itself. I just want to know whether sensor has any role to play in a compass. The Nokia care staff has no idea of what a compass is and how it works. He didnt understand the exact problem even after I showed it. I had to grab another similar phone and showed him how it works or should work. I am fed up with the failure of Nokia phones within a year or so. This is my 3rd handset in row to have developed issues. Seems better to move on to other phones.

I have a Nokia 500 with Belle installed (vers: 111.021.0028) and Nokia Suite vers 3.6.36.On the 17.12.2012 I've installed the latest version of Romania maps: 00.02.47.103 and since then I get the same error message 'car navigation cannot start at this location'. I can access the maps, I get the correct position but the problem occurs when I try to navigate to any address. It doesn't seem to have an actual issue with the location because I've tried several locations in Bucharest and got the same error.

I recently upgraded to the 9700 with Tmo in December. Coming from an 8900 I thought it would truly be an "upgrade". Since getting the 9700 i have had more dropped calls, call fail, can not access server etc. The phone will even go into a soft reset mid call, text or email for no reason. I called tmo and the replaced the phone and sim card. it worked well for about a day or two and BAM same crap. I am not so sure its the phone anymore. Some people i talk to say it is TMO service but i have never had this problem before and have been with tmo for 3 yrs.any suggestions /advice?

I have disabled assisted GPS (AGPS) in my Nokia E71, and now GPS unable to find my position. Outdoor, and even after 20 minutes. It a clear sky, and when AGPS is enabled, it picked up position straight away. I don't want to use AGPS as it is not free - connects to internet.

I am using my Nokia E71 as GPS. I am using "Integrated GPS" & "Assisted GPS".I am using a 3G access point from my provider. I noticed that I get a GPS connection in a few seconds almost anywhere (inside & outside).
This is because of the A-GPS.I know A-GPS is using the 3G network to get faster GPS connection.
Here is my question:
If I start Nokia Maps (3.03):
+how much KB will it use on the 3G network (for example when navigating to a location)?
+how long will I be connected with the 3G network (for example when navigating to a location)?
+will it be using the 3G network (downloading & sending data) all the time when Nokia Maps is open?
+is this going to cost me much to use this? If I open Nokia Maps 3 times each day.
After I get a GPS connection, will it stop using the 3G network (no more paying for kb data or time on 3G network)? This is realy important for me to know.I don't want my bill to be extra expensive.

Since the Anna update, the assisted GPS has been functionally broken on my phone. It takes many, many, many minutes to get a lock (using integrated GPS solely, when I'm out and about). The common solution to verify "use only in home network" for positioning server "supl.nokia.com" or whatever does NOT work for me. I know I'm not alone in this, as on these message boards and throughout the internet I also see people with n8's and this problem that cannot be fixed by that positioning server fix. There was a service pack and ovi maps update recently that I had hoped fix it. Instead, it seems to have made the problem a little bit more invisible. This is what normally happens: i have internet connectivity offline (i don't have an affordable data plan). Before the service pack, I would open Ovi Maps, and after a second or so I would get prompted with a "Connect to the internet?" option with "Connect automatically/Connect this Time/Cancel" choices. Before Symbian Anna, I would do "Connect This Time", I'd get charged like USD $.02, and then I'd get a GPS lock in less than 10 seconds. After Symbian Anna, nothing would happen, I'd get notification about a "System error", and then I'd get prompted again about making a data connection. I'd hit "Connect this Time" again, but nothing would seemingly happen. It would take upwards of 10 minutes to get a GPS lock, which tells me that A-GPS is being skipped in sole favor of integrated GPS.
With the service pack, the only difference is that I don't get a "System error" at all, but I keep getting prompted to make a data connection. Even if I hit "Connect this time" nothing happens.I can further verify that assisted-GPS isn't working simply because I'm not getting charged anything by my carrier (AT&T). Normally I get a notification that my last transaction cost me $.02 - $.03, which makes sense since AGPS is just a small bit of data back and forth to narrow down GPS satellites. However, since Symbian Anna, no matter how much I tell Maps to make the data connection, I never get charged anything. For the record, I have virtually NOTHING custom-installed on my phone. Swype is the only non-stock app I have, so my phone is as basically close to factory-reset as possible. So it's not like I have something funny messing up my A-GPS.

I have installed the latest firmware on my E52 (v031.012) and the latest Ovi maps v3.03. Since, I haven't managed to find my position by using either A-GPS or by the cell that I was in.With the Ovi maps that I had before, the phone was able to position me on the map, based on the gsm/3g cell that I was in in a matter of seconds. Also, it was able to get a GPS fix in a few tens of seconds, probably based on A-GPS.Now the GPS positioning is very slow and working only in open air. Does anybody have a solution to this problem?

I'm using Foursquare on a Nokia N8-00.I notice that the built-in GPS is always being used by Foursquare even if it's already connected to the internet anyway. Naturally, this takes up more battery power because 2 connection types are being used at the same time. Now, I know that this can also be changed by unchecking the "integrated GPS" in Positioning, under the Application Settings. What I'd like to know is if there is a way to unable it but only for Foursquare so that I do not need to go to my settings to turn it on every time I want to use my GPS apps such as Garmin Mobile XT or Nokia Maps.

From the manual: When the GPS connection is active, marks your current or last known location on the map. If the icon's colours are faint,no GPS signal is available. If only cell ID based positioning is available, a red halo around the positioning icon indicates the general area you might be in. The accuracy of the estimate increases in densely populated areas.Im using newest firmware and newest Ovi Maps (free always) 3.03 and have downloaded the maps to my device (5800ME). Setting Maps only to go online on my acceptance. No problems so far.But when starting Ovi Maps the cell ID based positioning is using up mobile data traffic. I dont want that. Wait for an update or is there a setting?I guess AGPS always tries via mobil data - but in my country free GPS is perfectly enough.

On my Nokia N97 mini the positioning methods are not stored.NO positioning method at all is by default stored in my N97 mini.
Therefore i have to select a positioning method first each time before I can use GPS with the new Ovi Maps.
This is really annoying. Is this a known bug and is there a solution for this?

With Wi-Fi off and opening the native iPhone map app there is always a pop up message saying GPS accuracy improves with Wi-Fi on and has a button to go right to settings to turn it on. Okay, I know GPS accuracy is improved while connected to Wi-Fi, but is it improved even when not connected but turned on?Thinking maybe just having Wi-Fi on searching and locating connections may pinpoint your location relative to Wi-Fi routers and/or hot spots along your route and help with positioning and tracking. I know this would kill the battery but am neurotic enough about my GPS tracking apps to do it anyway. My experiments with this are inclusive. May seem like a silly question but like I said I'm neurotic about my GPS accuracy. So, does anyone know for sure one way or the other?

I went on holiday recently and turned off all mobile data and noticed how slow the GPS was to fix - fine - no aGPS so what I expected. But back in the UK and it's still taking a long time (minutes) to get a fix. It used to get one in seconds. So I went to the menu to see if was. Under "location and security" I have -Use wireless networksUse GPS satelitesThen it goes onto "Compass" - no checkbox for aGPS. I can't remember if it was there before but I've seen people mention it on the internet. One slight complication - I moved to Froyo when I came back to the UK and don't know if it's related to that!

If instructions upon page 77 of N9 UG (Eng) not clear enough you do need to download appropriate voice file with street names as none installed by default. After you have chosen "Walking person" icon > Get directions > Navigate you need to tap upon grey tool bar at base of screen After selecting Voice Guidance > tap on select voice to reveal choices available.

i'm very familiar with the W715 and have been using one for the past 18 months and made good use of the AGPS feature - very fast fix times even indoors. Suddenly I now find that this phone is behaving as if AGPS is disabled in the menu. Master reset/Reflashing using SEUS and redownloaded my internet settings has not fixed the problem and even Vodafone UK have now provided me with a warranty replacement handset which performs exactly the same?! The world icon comes up for 5 seconds upon loading 'status info' just the satellites do not appear within the circles as they used to - instead they line up at the left/right of the screen until orbital data is downloaded via the strongest satellite instead of from the AGPS server. More worryingly my brand new W995 on O2 performs exactly the same which leads me to believe this is a SE problem and their rubbish about sending phone in for repair has really got me confused - how exactly will this help me? To clarify both handsets GPS chips work fine and will locate but the old slow way as if I don't have a data connection on the phone. But I do and can browse websites and check email so its not that. I've got Vodafone offering to send me yet another handset as their only solution, O2 I have a couple of days left to return under distance selling regulations but what I really want is AGPS working as it did before Called SE helpline today and they are the most unhelpful bunch i've ever dealt with. Telling me because the GPS works its not a problem, they totally ignore my comments that its not working WITH assistance. They also tell me they don't run any assistance server yet they must because you cannot change it in the settings anywhere and swapping network SIM cards used to be fine as long at there was a data profile setup.
Now two networks, two phones and no GPS assistance on either. Can anyone have a check on their handset and see if AGPS is working correctly or has a server gone down somewhere? Very lost and don't want to get blagged again when this technicial person rings me back to explain a bit better why my phone is OK and I just don't know what i'm talking about.

Maps 3.08 does not let me calibrate my compass (at least not by ticking once or twice at the compass). By consequence, while navigating it does not orientate the display with the top in the forward direction. I found a workaround by using a separate compass application, calibrate the compass there, and then Maps works perfect. There must be a easier way to calibrate the compass from within the Maps application.
