View 11 RepliesI cant get past step 4 using "official" motorola directions to clear the cache partition after upgrading to 5.0.
"1. With the phone powered off, press the VOL DOWN KEY for 2-3 seconds then POWER key then release.
2. The device will display different BOOT OPTIONS
3. Use the VOL DOWN Key to SCROLL to Recovery and VOL UP Key to select
Tip: If the device reboots, you may have waited to long to make a selection, you will need to begin the process again.
4. The device will display the Motorola logo and then the Android in distress ( logo with Exclamation mark)
5. Press and hold the VOL UP key for 10-15 seconds. While still holding the VOL UP key tap and release the POWER key
Tip: You can try this step, holding the phone in landscape. If you are stuck on step 6, try a force reboot by pressing the Power key and Vol Down key, and start the process again.
6. The device will display additional menu options (Text will appear in BLUE)
7. Use the VOL DOWN Key to scroll to wipe cache partition and the POWER Key to select this option
8. The device will then perform the partition wipe
9. The device will reboot and start the normal power up sequence

View 2 Replies View RelatedI now for the past hour am trying to wipe the partition cache but when I get to the last step where it shows the no command instead of it bringing me to the recovery menu it just reboots every time.
To wipe the cache partition, follow these steps:
Turn off the device.
Press and hold the Volume Up and the Volume Down and Power keys at the same time for about 10 seconds.
An image of an Android lying on its back will appear.
Press the Volume Down key twice until "Recovery mode" appears on the screen.
Press the Power key to restart in "Recovery mode."
An image of an Android with a red triangle will appear.
While holding down the Power key, tap the Volume Up key.
The Android System Recovery screen will appear. Release all keys. (But it does not appear it just reboots the device and brings me back to the lock screen every time)
Use the Volume keys to scroll to wipe data cache partition and press the Power key to select.
The phone will restart.
Just a question for everyone that occasionally wipes the cache partition from recovery like I do. I'm on my 2nd replacement and after I set it all up I wiped the cache partition but for some reason it takes longer than usual for the process to finish. Usually it would be like 2 seconds where now it takes around 35-40 seconds to complete. How long does it usually take you to clear your cache?

What's the difference between doing a "Clear cached data" via Settings and wiping the cache partition via Recovery mode?
View 4 Replies View RelatedSo my Moto X (2014) has been a little slow lately. I decided that I'd try and clear the cache for the first time seeing as how I've encountered that recommendation several times here on the site. I've never done it, even after upgrading to 5.0.
Today I tried it and it just got stuck on "Formatting /cache..." for about 10 minutes before I decided just to reboot and try again. I've cleared cache on several other devices before and it's usually very very quick. After a reboot, same thing with the exception of these error messages:
I gave up and just booted into the OS. The phone is working ok but I don't think my cache is cleared. I have a 32GB Pure Edition. No root or custom ROMs or anything.
I want to clear my system cache in the recovery menu, how do you get there? I'm used to doing it on an HTC.

Is there a way to access Recovery Mode on S6 to clear up system cache?

After extensive researching and contacting HTC directly, I found out that I am supposed to get a few options where one of them is 'Wipe Cache Partition'. However, all I get is a black screen for a few secods, then an icon of my phone with an exclamation mark on it. That appears for about a minute, after that the phone reboots.
Any reason that's not working? I'm running Lollipop 5.1 and Sense 7.0.
OK so my phone was basically wrecked with the original Lollipop update. Did the cache partition wipe, factory restore, and for a while it was ok.. then it started acting up again - getting super hot, quick battery drain, apps crashing. Applied the other update from Verizon and went through all the same steps again, with the same results. Each time I reinstalled fewer and fewer apps. Now I've just done another cache partition wipe, factory restore, set up no email accounts, installed no apps, and am running in safe mode.. and my phone feels pretty hot. What's the best/safest way to check the health (temp) of the battery? Should I install GSam for a while? Or is there a way within the stock battery stuff to check the temp?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've got a Sprint Galaxy S5, and just did the OTA update to Lollipop. Initially I was getting a notification about a Google Play Services error, and all the icons for apps stored on my SD card were grayed out, but still usable. The Google Play Services error and the icon issue seemed to take care of themselves with a re-start, and everything seems to be working OK now.
I've read here and other places that doing a Wipe Partition Cache after the update often smooths things up and can improve speed, with no risk of losing data. Well, I've tried about a dozen times to do the 3 button press, but all I ever accomplish is restarting the phone. Is there a trick to getting into Recovery, or should I just keep trying?
On my old HTC EVO phone, and on my Nexus 7 2012 WiFi 32GB, Clearing / Wiping the Cache Partition, is a good practice to keep the OS running smoothly.
On the N6, I haven't seen much discussion of it.
Would you do it as a regular maintenance step?
Would you do it before and/or after flashing or installing a new version of Android?
I've been making it a point to, once a week, go into 'system recovery' and wipe the cache. It isn't to correct an issue that not wiping can create, but rather as maintenance to keep the phone running well. I was curious how often the rest of you wipe the cache?

View 24 Replies View Relatedit takes about 5 - 10 minutes to perform a wipe from Recovery, where in Lollipop and before, it was a few seconds. A couple of websites have corroborated this.what's changed in 6.0 that a cache wipe takes so long? I'm on an unrooted N5 and performed a clean factory flash (and re-locked the bootloader).
Code:
mkfs -t ext4 /dev/[device]
to
Code:
rm -rf /cache/*
Or something, I mean, even formatting a heavily encrypted partition shouldn't take that long (especially one as small as /cache).
The first time it took about 10 mins. 2nd time failed after 30 mins and I had to restart. 3rd time just took 25 mins but completed. What's going on!?!?!
