IPhone :: How To Accurately Test 4
Jun 27, 2010Probably the best way to test the real time 3G connection on your iPhone is with a ping tool. The one I used is a free app called Network Ping Lite.Download the tool and turn off WIFI. Open it up and choose the Ping utility. Enter an ip (you can use 208.67.222.222), scroll down to turn on "Ping forever" and then hit Start.
Watch to see if you get a response and note the time in "ms". Then do whatever you think might affect the connection. If the times go up or if it stops responding you've affected the connection.
Mine will sometimes start dropping pings almost immediately after putting the lower left corner of the phone in my palm. This is what happens in the screenshot below. FWIW, this doesn't bother me, I just hold the phone a different way.

Aug 30, 2010I used my upgrade on a second line to get my girlfriend an Iphone 4. She is not on my line. I purchased today from the Apple Store, and they did not activate it in the store (gave to me still shrink wrapped in the box, but did obviously scan it out).How do I go about getting it activated on her line?Can she use the sim it comes with to activate on her line, since I didn't activate on my line yet, or does she need a new sim?How do I go about removing the Iphone 4 from my line so I don't have to pay the data plan? Anything else I should know?

Jun 29, 2010I've set up my iP4 as a New phone and did NOT restore from a previous backup. I did a full charge to 100%, reset the data usage and made sure all apps were closed. I put it the phone to sleep (clicked power button) and I went to sleep. I woke up this morning and woke the phone up; 4% was used after 6hrs and 50min of standby time, there was no other usage.
Doing some quick math this would equate to 170.83 hours of standby time assuming a linear relationship; 56.94% of the 300hrs on the spec sheet.
410min/4% = 102.50min/% of standby use
102.5min*100/60 = 170.83 hours
This seems pretty light given the standby time rating. I'm hoping I can get others to perform the same test to get a decent sample of performance, please post your findings.

Aug 3, 2010Running the speed test app side-by-side with my wife's iPhone 4 and she's getting an avg of 1.5Mbps and my iPhone 4 is getting 700k.
I've run this 4 times now with the same results each time.
She's got an Apple bumper, I've got an iFrogz case.
She's got 4 bars.
I've got 2 bars.
They're literally sitting next to each other on a table.
I took my case off, no change.
Hers is also one minute faster than mine (both clocks set to auto)

IPhone :: New IP4 On Non Activated Contract?
Aug 15, 2010Last month I got an iP4 on Vodafone contract through CPW and was porting over from o2. Nothing happened and, a month later I have a Vodafone subsidised iP4, no Vodafone contract and my old up and running o2 contract. I have checked the above with Voda and o2.
Now I've buggered up my sim card I need a new one. I have two choices.
a) Go back to CPW, tell them what's happened, give them a bollocking and demand that they sort my Vodafone contract so I can get on with it.
b) Go to o2 and ask for a new sim and carry on as normal. I haven't used the new phone as a phone yet due to no micro sim so I assume it'll take the o2 sim then lock to it?
Action has to be taken today as I have no working sim and need a phone but I change my mind every five minutes.

Aug 23, 2010Considering the poor performance of ios4 on the iphone4, I'm inclined to wonder did the developers have any phones to test it on. Some of the bugs are so blatantly obvious typing lags dreadful Bluetooth performance and that awful proximity sensor bug. I waited several weeks after US launch mainly to allow all bugs to be ironed out but that didn't work. Cmon apple get your finger out. You dropped the ball on this one.

Also makes me wander who else might be aware of my sms conversations!I cant put my finger on when the issue first started, it does seem to have started fairly recenlty though. At first i thought i must have done something wrong...but now i am sure there is some sort of anomaly here. I have done an iphone reset (ie..hold power and home buttons down for 10 seconds). That did not seem to resolve. My friends is using an iphone 3GS (not sure of iOS version) and my wife and i are both on iphone 4 with 5.1.1. My wife's and my phone are managed by the same itunes account / pc (not sure if there is some sort of confusion between phs somehow?)

[Environment: Sandbox] Ok so let me explain a few things, after doing some research on the web, here are answers for some questions that you might ask.
1.) No, my iphone isn't jailbroken.2.) I can download from my ipad2 but not from my iphone 4s3.) This is the third time this happened. The first time it happened was back in May, I restored and backed up my iphone. Then on July 26 this happened again, so I backed up and restored my account again. Then the problem came back just now.4.) My mom, two sisters, and one brother all use MY ACCOUNT on their devices. I use my account on my ipad and iphone 4s. So in total, six devices are using my account, two of those devices are mine. 5.) To be fair, I only experienced this problem when I put my account on my brother and sisters devices. However I don't think that's the problem.6.) Yes, I tried to sign out, turned off my iphone, opened my iphone. Yet I still get the same error.7.) My mom and siblings can download perfectly, my ipad even works, it's just my iphone that's causing trouble.

Sometimes a few times per day my phone goes to no service in a high signal area (tested with a other phone on the same network) Turning on airplane mode and off sometimes restored service.If that fails sometimes a reset network setting can restores service. But sometimes as the reset reboots the phone it then needs activated again! And it will not activate via Itunes or wi-fI. Also after a few reboots and telling the phone its getting replaced with a HTC is starts working again! I have also done a number of restores and total clear outs via itunes.
