IPhone :: Get Contacts After Update?

My phone has not been updatd since August until today. I did not have icloud before. It is an Iphone 4 for Verizon. I downloaded ios5.1.1 onto my Itunes and it told me that it would save my contacts/calendars/etc but nothing else so I saved my pics/video and proceeded. I turned my phone on and all my texts were there but no names of contacts on them. My favorite contacts are there in the phone option but there are no names there just numbers. I tried to restore it but all that did was make me lose the apps I had just re-downloaded.

Is there a way or app that can let me update my sim contacts or do i have to use my old non smartphone to do that?

I just updated my iphone and all my contacts have been erased. All recent calls and text messages are there. We have updated other iphones without losing the contacts. Is there any way I can get my contact information restored. We specified for the update to not sync contacts since I had no contacts in my itunes library. I had over 200 contacts on my iphone so i did not want to have to type them individually into my library.

Cannot update personal info (contacts, calendar, reminders) without being forced toive up all my private data to Apple via the iCloud. This really ***** and I'm sure probably illegal somewhere. Sometimes feel like just trashing my iphone and getting an Android. I am not the only one with this issue. Apple refuse to help saying I have to give up all private information to them by putting it on their servers (iCloud).

Backed up before updating, even though the update assured me everything would be preserved. All the messages are still there, but the contacts are gone. Apps, photos, everything else backed up and restored with no problem, just contacts are gone.

I just updated my iphone and now after an hour of waiting...I have no contacts, when I try to use my phone it just flashes and goes right back to the home screen. I still have text messages and when I tried to add them to my contacts again, it flashes and goes right back to home screen.

I backed up to itunes before update, but last known update showing in itunes is 2010?I had just updated itunes to latest software, if this would make any difference!After the restore has completed, if i open phone app and go onto favourites, the names show for a second and then it goes back to showing numbers only.
Contact list only shows a blank( well.... lined) sheet, as opposed to the alphbetical list on the R/H side. I didn't have icloud, so not backed up to there!!
Also, there is not a "contact groups" icon in the top right of contacts, as suggested on other answers for this problem.

everytime i sync my iphone with itunes, the sync contacts is always unchecked and i have to click on the box to check it. should i be doing this all the time? and after updating my iphone to 5.1.1 , my contacts have been disappearing. i have an icloud account and a microsoft exchange account.

i wanted to update my iphone ios
so I backup my phone , restore it and the update it, but now after I restore my iphone all the info from my backup all my contacts are lost I tryied to do all those thing with the iCloud (aint worked for me :S) , and i also tried to sync my contacts from the outlook , aint worked either =[

I have just recently updated my iPhone from a pretty old version, and thought I had my contacts backed up in either iTunes or at least with Google from using their sync feature in the past. After updating I have none of my contacts and when I select to use iCloud, no contacts appear. I have also tried resetting everything to see if it then comes in.
Any tips on ways in which I can get my contacts back?

My mother in law has a iPhone 4 and has never been synced, so I decided I would update her software for her. In doing so all of the contacts were lost. Her phone has never been synced before using a computer and never been updated, until now.
