I upgraded to iPhone 5C and erased my iPhone 4. When looking at turn in old phone for a rebate instructions, they asked if Find My Phone was disabled. I don't know if erasing does this.

The BB had very sensitive data on it so it would be advisable to erase its harddrive. I don't have an unlimited data plan, so when I use my phone while traveling, every time I look on Google maps- or any other location-based app for that matter- it's using up my data plan and costing me money. I think it's stupid that Apple has tied the built-in gps inextricably to the data service- they could at least let the gps operate in a reduced capacity when data is unavailable. What is one supposed to do if one lives in or travels to a location with limited data network availability? At any rate, this is the world we live in, so my question is this: if I get an external gps receiver, and turn off my data service, will my phone be able to extract and use my location from the device?
