Motorola Motoactv :: Running Indoors Not Calcuating Speed Correctly?
Mar 31, 2012
When exercising on the treadmill at the gym, I have tried the "Walking/Indoors" program. At first I calibrated it at 3.0 mph (I actually run at 4.5mph). The pedometer seemed to be right on track, but the speed was just all over the place. So I read discussions in the forum that said it should be calibrated at the actual mph at which you walk/run. So I recalibrated today at 4.5 mph, and still the speed was jumping everywhere but the correct number.Full disclosure: My excercise routine is a power-walk (all that's left for me to do due to a spinal condition). I wear the ACTV on my wrist because I like to keep checking the stats. Even if I hold my arm still in front of me, the speed keeps oscillating.
In my training plan for the marathon, I usually have one long run per week, between 24 and 32 Km.
Although all my other (short) runs export correctly to csv file in the portal, for importing into SportTracks or Runkeeper (via a link provided buy an user), when my run is > 25 Km the imported file does not convert well - although the route is okay, there is no useable data regarding speed/pace..
I am using my MA 16Go (FW 1.6.6 N16) for a week now and I love it. But I also have problems to setup my workouts on the portal.1. Pace zones (settings/fitness zones/pace zones)When I enter my zones, I give a name to the template and save. When I reload the page, the values are gone. Only the new template name and the zone labels are still there.2. Planning workoutI am trying to set up a workout of 3 activities: a warm-up, an interval workout and a slow down. Each activity has a duration and a heart rate zone assigned. When I save the workout, the heart rate zone of the interval activity are coming back to the lower zone by default.
The weight Goal section is not working correctly. The graph is stuck on week 8, even though I'm on week 13 it says. I updated my weight goals, but the graph never reset to the new start weight and target dates.
My run workouts are being truncated, when I actually perform my run the display shows correctly but when I end my workout my information is truncated. Example went on a 7mile run everything displayed correctly but when I ended my workout the results show only 5.19 miles of my run.
Typical cycling computers use the sensors to measure both distance and speed. When an ANT+ speed sensor is used with the MotoACTV, does it get used for distance as well, or just speed? I commute in downtown Chicago and would welcome the more accurate distance measurement in addition to the GPS route tracking.
I just got my MOTOACTV and I love it.. I ride a stationary bike both at the gym and at home and I have yet to purchase the bike sensor.. while I understand I cannot monitor cadence or speed, I am trying to monitor my HR. I selected eliptical trainer for a ride just so that my HR would show up.. is there any way to simply monito your HR?
However, after the latest update, the battery life, even when doing nothing, is terrible. I had it charged to 100% before I went to sleep last night and when I woke up the battery was dead and the watch was off. Before it would last a couple of days even if I went on a short ride.
I did recently pair it to a Garmin speed/cadence sensor. But the battery was dying, like I said, when I wasn't even biking.
Which brings me to my second question. I got the speed sensor because I hoped that instead of waiting for the GPS to catch up to when I am stopped, that the speed sensor (like the wired one I have on my actual bike computer) would know immeditely when I've stopped and not mess up my average speed by having the time keep tracking when I was standing still. My wired computer has pause and start down to a science. Why can't this? Why is it still using GPS for speed instead of the sensor? Cadence works fine, so I know it isn't a communication problem, I don't think, anyway.
I purchased a new bike, and changed the setting default profile for cycle to MTB2, and I changed the tire size 29 after I noted the problem after the first run that the ACTV was set to the default cycle, (I guess) but since I started riding this bike the milage and mph have been off, the first ride was showing I think it was 22 miles, it was on 1 apr 2012, you can check my workouts, but we really rode about 27 miles. Today I rode exactly 22 miles and it was showing a little over 20 miles?
I hope I've missed something in the settings, I can't use this if its not accurate, plus I used it for 1 hour and 45 minutes today and the battery was almost at 0%? This is a problem considering that I will be doing 100 miles rides, which can take several hours.
I just got this last week in the hopes of replacing my ageing Garmins (Edge 705 for the bike and Forerunner 405 for runs) and have just put in 2 short rides over the weekend. I manage a couple of online training sites (don't ask me why) including the awesome Sportracks and these typically can either import .CSV or .TCX files. So I got the CSV exported from the MotoACTV website and basically imported it wholesale into Sportracks. Also I used an online tool to convert the CSV to TCX where I upload to Garminconnect and Strava (online). What I observed is that the speed shows 'spikes and dips' I guess overall the average speed will be the same over distance and I've checked this to be true but what with the 'spikes and dips'? This has basically sent the power estimation algorithm in Strava and Sportracks to overestimate the power due the the sudden deceleration 'dips' and sudden acceleration 'recovery from dips'. I don't see the same issue on the speed curve on the motoactv site itself.
I have noticed that the average speed reported per lap/interval does not correlate with the graph. For example, I did an interval workout on my bike recently. As you can see from the image below, my average speed for interval 5 was 32.99 km/hr. I know this to be correct, because I was trying to keep my fast intervals at +30 km/hr, and could see this on my watch during the workout. However, as you can see, the graph seems to be displaying an average speed of around 13 km/hr, and shows that my speed never went about 20 km/hr.
This problem is happening for me on all of my cycling workouts, whether or not I have a scheduled interval routine or just autolap for 1km. For some of the intervals (maybe 5-10 %), the graph seems to be consistent with the average speed for the interval, but for the majority of intervals it is all messed up. I'm using the 8GB version with the latest software update. My .csv for the workout is also attached.
Tonight I was running and about a mile or so into my run it stopped tracking it and did nothing for a half mile or so, and then I suddenly heard workout starting/workout starting in my headset and I looked and saw that the odometer was back at 0. The music never hiccupped and I never touched the screen or any buttons. This is the first time this has happened to me. I have the latest software update.
Why does one need to input a tire size for cycling if the GPS should track speed and distance? I owned a Garmin 205 and did not have a sensor. I only used the GPS and was able to track speed and distance very accurately. I tested the MOTOACTV in a car for 3.5 miles. For some reason the GPS was not tracking any information except the track, which was correct. Instead of 3.5 miles, it showed 0.51 miles. Will this also happen on the bike?
Tried to callibrate MA for indoor running;Did what the prompts said -- however, it says for the 1st 2-mins. run easy -- my MA DID NOT let me go for the total 2-mins...tried a couple of times and it usually cut me off at about 1-min?When I look at my workouts OF COURSE the paces are off because it didn't calibrate...I saw that I could "correct" the distance on the MA, but how can I go to my MA.com and enter in the laps column my actual splits..ie., 1-mile??
I actually Don't track calories but was wondering why this indoor workout said 0 calories burned? I DID wear my HR monitor...(Incidentally, I have a new NordicTrack treadmill AND the calories burned compared to my Garmin AND the MA (when I got calories from outdoor run) were ALL completely different..by a lot).I enetered the same data for all 3 re. weight, etc...
tonight I will be doing a 2 km warm up run. Then running 800 meter repeats x 6 then 2 km cool down. Is it possible to track each 800 meter run to see speed and time?
In the midst of marathon training the last two weekends, I've gone to pause my MOTOACTV during a 12 miler and 13 miler when waiting at a stoplight, yet in both cases the MOTOACTV ended my workouts!
This is without me hitting "end workout" on the screen..
I know that the audio coaching automatically advises you of your stats at 50% and 85% of your set (distance) goal while running.I could have sworn that previously I had the ability to set it to give status updates at a marked distance (0.5 mile, 1 mile, etc.) regardless of my distance goal. Am I correct, and that functionality is now gone? Or was I possibility using another setting or option, like intervals (I don't think so)? Please advise. I know I can do the shake/tap check any time, but it's so much more convenient to have the preset coaching.
When creating running workout, is there a way to have more than the 2 intervals. For Example, it I'm training in different Zones, I may want to train in Zone1 for 5 minutes, Zone2 for 5 minutes, then Zone3 for 5 Minutes and repeat that set 4 times. Right now, it appears I havew to enter Interval (single) for Zone1, Zone2, and Zone3 and then add those intervala in that order 4 times instead adding them once in a single stage and then tell it to repeat 4 times. Is that correct or am I missing something? If that is true, I think you should make that enhancement in your next update.
I used to own a 3GS years ago, and decided to buy another. Back then it was Fast! 4.1! Now? 5.x.x is Horrible! 256 megs ram should be plenty as before but I guess Apple just wanna make things difficult.
Is there a way that the music on/off button could be used to advance to the next song (in a future update of course)? I run to the music beat and sometimes want to speed up/sloww down the music selection without stopping to advance the music. Just a thought
I want to buy an ant+ Cadence sensor which is really inexpensive and I'd like to know if I could pair it and use it as a SPEED sensor for my bike. Since a cadence sensor just counts how often the magnet passes by it then I guess they are the same as speed sensor. What would be the steps to complete this? or are the profiles baked in the firmware of the sensors and there's no way for the Motoactv to profile it as a different type of sensor?
Any good app to speed up Internet access on Galaxy S2 running ICS. Wifi connection is fine, it's when I am connected via 3G that speed drops and applications such as facebook takes a long time to open and sometimes I encounter timeout errors. For a phone with such a fast processor this is a little bit disappointing. My question therefore is there an app that can run in the background to speed the 3g connection up?
I have a Torch 9800 which is on the vodafone network and when I am at home in my flat I get zero reception (SOS). I initially thought it may be a network issue but this is not the case since when I switch my SIM to my girlfriend's phone (a Nokia) it shows full reception.
I haven't noticed a similar problem in any other locations but that's not to say it doesn't happen elsewhere i'm just unlikely to notice something like that anywhere other than at home or at work.
I have owned a BB Torch for 14 months. Within the last 30-45 days I get very limited to no phone reception in my office and at my home. I have the same office for over two years and lived in the same home for 19 years. ATT claims the phone is defective. It has never been dropped. It does not have any marks or scratches on it.When in my office a an SOS signal. I get text messages and emails.Any one know of a solution or is this BB a non-reliable phone.
I've owned the MotoActv for two month, I got the mysterious "moisture issues" that everyone seems to be getting even though I've never used it in the rain. But the thing that is driving me nuts is the music. When I hit random shuffle of all my songs, I hear songs I don't want to hear... song that I do not own on my computer. Where are these songs coming from? Today I heard "Boot Scoot Boogie!" I abhore country music as does my wife. Doing a computer wide search shows no evidence that the song exists on my computer. Yet there it is playing in mile four. Other mystery songs have showed up too. The performance music playlist seems to be filled with songs I never heard of, yet evidently I perform well to them.
I too am a former Droid X user who has been upgraded to a DX2 due to the numerous problems with the Droid X Gingerbread Firmware updates.
I have seen this GPS issue mentioned in another thread and in other forums so I know its not unique to my device, but it was buried in with a lot of other issues and thought it deserved its own thread, which might raise awareness of it for Motorola.
I use CardioTrainer to run, and although the overall location seems to be accurate in "Gross" (my run started and ended on the correct streets) the track showed me "jumping" all over the place in approximately 50 ft increments. This resulted in my 6 mile run showing as 10 miles long! And the pace per mile was similarly incorrect. At this time I do not seem to be experiencing the East/West bug, although I will confirm that by using the Google Nav app the next time I am in my car (just activated the phone yesterday). Additionally, I turn off wifi and bluetooth, leaving on celluar radio and GPS to improve stability before starting my runs, as well as, doing a fresh reboot. These steps seemed to increase the chance of completing a run with my Droid X.
This is a major component of my use of the phone, and I really enjoyed having an all in one, mp3/radio, gps, phone, that assisted me on my runs. I cannot yet comment on whether the X2 is more stable than the X, due to my limited time with the phone.
