I set a passcode to my iphone 4s but do not remember it. My phone is NOT locked but is there a way to reset the passcode with out resetting the whole phone?

Changed my passcode lock from letters back to numbers. I know what numbers i picked for the lock but the phone won't let me in! Tried a number of combinations but none worked! Has it ever happened that an iPhone won't let you in with the correct passcode? Does it usually malfunction when you switch back to numbers? One thread suggested connecting the iPhone to iTunes on the PC that I used to originally sync this phone, and then "reset" the iPhone. But, when I attempt to connect the iPhone to iTunes, I get the following error message: "iTunes could not connect the iPhone because it is locked with a passcode. my son attempted to unlock my Iphone 4 after I changed the passcode. He tried so many times that it disabled my Iphone. I know the passcode, but it will not allow me to enter it. How can I fix this issue? This seems to be a common issue, but the only thing I see that can be done is to reset your Iphone which will delete everything. I have pictures on it I can't lose.
