BB Bold 9700 :: Bold 9000 Keyboard Is Better Than Others

Aug 29, 2010

Of the three blackberrys i have owned and used (9000, 9700 and 9800) i have to say i think the 9000's keyboard is by far the best of them all. I am on the 9700 right now and really miss my 9000's keyboard. It felt so much more roomy and comfortable to type on. I wish they would make a larger phone like the 9000 again. IMO it had the best keyboard, best sounding speakerphone and of course that nice large screen.

BB Bold 9700 :: Bold 9000 To Bold 9700 Users

The other day I walked into a Walmart that had a display of cell phones. There was the 9700 there. I have the 9000. I was really looking forward to upgrading to the 9700, but now I don't know. It's LIKE REALLY small. I love the size of my 9000, and I'm afraid I'm going to have times typing on the 9700 keyboard now.

BB Bold 9700 :: Bold Keyboard Sliver Pieces That Separate Each Row Of Keys Are Fragile

May 10, 2010

I have had my 9700. I just noticed today that the sliver pieces that separate each row of keys are fragile. I have one piece that is totally broken on both sides under the Talk and End button, another broken one under the Q and the lower left one below the Z key. On all of them but bottom one, they were originally hard to see. Not sure how I found them but upon closer inspection, more and more were broken. The bottom one actually sticks up some.

My only concern is that they are going to get worse and totally break off and then free for all on dust and dirt in actual keyboard. These silver strips look real cheap. Anyone else have broken ones in their keyboard? How have you solved the issue? Can they easliy replace just the keyboard at the tech center? I have seen OEM keyboards for sale too but not sure I want to try that myself. I am going to call At&t but not sure if they will do a warranty swap for this. My wife has the same phone and hers are all fine and intact. I think parts of this phone were made on a budget. Bad design with the keyboard.

BB Bold 9000 :: Keyboard Too Sensitive

May 24, 2010

I'm a fairly fresh Blackberry convert and I'm absolutely loving my Blackberry Bold 9000 and having an amazing keyboard that worked extremely well, for a bit.

Lately though, the keyboard is WAY too sensitive all of a sudden, many times while I send a message I have to constantly correct errors where I thumb a key and it responds by typing that letter twice. The same exact thing is happening with my menu key, I press the menu key and I quite literally am "moving" an icon around my menu screen as it registers that I hit the key twice.

I've had this Blackberry for TWO weeks and though I'm loving it this is a serious problem and starting to get on my nerves. I contemplated thinking if it was just my typing but this happens so subtlety I ruled that out fairly fast. I really have no clue what's going on and tried playing around with the "key rate" settings to no avail. Unfortunately a return isn't really an option as I bought this mobile new online and am starting a contract with my company soon.

BB Bold 9000 :: Screen And Keyboard Both Turn On

Jan 25, 2010

since installing .411 my Bold hasn't had a single problem, apart from one. Every now and again, I will notice it light up, the screen and keyboard both turn on. After a couple of seconds, it will dim out as it would after use.

I have a windows mobile phone and before I receive a text message, that is exactly what that does, but I receive nothing when the Bold lights up? The only fix I have is to put it into bedside mode as it doesn't seem to happen when in that state....

BB Bold 9000 :: Keyboard Lock Feature

May 30, 2010

Is there anyway to revert back to the old way of unlocking the bold, like from early 5.0 OS? like when you were supposed to hold * and the call button, because I absolutely despise this new mute button procedure and my mute button on my bold is already becoming unresponsive.Basically I'm wondering if perhaps there's a application that can switch them or maybe even a way to configure a different button on my bold to mute because as it is the default button (top left of the bold) is pretty much becoming unresponsive on my phone and I don't really want to get locked out.

BB Bold 9700 :: Bold 9700 Changes Keyboard Color

Mar 1, 2010

I found it out! You have to dismantle the phone, though. Walkthrough:

1) Remove the bottom plate with the branding (use guitar pick, small flat screwdriver, etc)
2) Remove and save warranty sticker in case the phone actually breaks.
3) Remove the two small screws on either side of the phone.
4) Using a guitar pick, small screwdriver, or case-opener tool, start on the sides of the phones slightly below the convenience keys and move down towards the bottom. On the bottom, there are three small clips that WILL NOT BREAK NO MATTER WHAT. Disconnect them. Then remove the keypad top first.
5) Slowly slide the pick/driver/tool from the bottom edges of the phone up until the volume rocker. One tab on each side should pop, but they are difficult. Take your time.
6) Grip the sides of the bezel and slide upwards. The top cover should come off along with the back chrome bezel (the one above the camera).
7) The phone will now appear very basic with only the trackpad and screen recognizable. On the white lower portion, several small, rectangular LEDs can be seen.
8) Use a preferred color of sharpie to color a large clear piece of packing or scotch tape, and cut it into 2mmx2mm squares.
9) Place one color square over each LED. Reassembly
10) Insert the keypad into the bezel bottom first, making sure that the screw tabs for the keypad are underneath the screw tabs in the bezel.
11) Holding this configuration, slide the bezel on top first.
12) Make sure the hole for the trackpad and the trackpad itself line up, this will assure you that the keypad is in right. Also look at the "frets" in the keypad.
13) Push on the bottom of the bezel until you hear at most three clicks (the three tabs locking back into place)
14) Run your fingers along the side with pressure to make sure that you snap in the single tab on both sides of the phone.
15) Insert and screw in the two small screws you took out before.
16 OPTIONAL) Put back the warranty sticker on the ORIGINAL side that it was on before.
17) Snap the carrier plate back into place.
18) You're done PICS TO FOLLOW

BB Bold 9000 :: RIM Changes Keyboard Lock Settings For .822 With No Regard For User

Aug 26, 2010

At first glance, upgrading from .681 to .822 didn't appear to do too much; save for performance boosts, the OS remained largely the same as would be expected.. well, except for completely changing how the keyboard lock function operates and not providing settings for users to revert back to its prior logistics.
Lock Function Prior to .822: Setting your left soft key as lock, you could lock your phone from anywhere within the OS, showing a "locked" home screen (without actually going to it). To unlock after screen shuts off, you could press any key (as far as I remember) and it would bring up the "locked home screen", from there you would press A (or *) + Send to unlock.Lock Function in .822: Using the left soft key to lock, screen immediately shuts off going into lock mode without any screen feedback. To unlock after screen shuts off, you have to press only the "Power/End" key to bring up the "locked home screen" and then press the "mute" key.

Ah, so one key instead of two, just like the iPhone and many other smart phones; this must mean .822's method is better, right? Nope, and here's why.Reasons pre-.822 method is superior:On locking the phone, you received feedback that the phone was locked (nice), but more than that, the time was displayed, which is frequently absent depending on the application you're using (why it's not always displayed up top, I won't even begin to fathom).Being able to press any key or at least main function keys such as the soft keys and other function keys like the trackball to bring up the "locked home screen" mean quicker and easier access to the time as well as being able to unlock the phone. The mute key is flush with top casing of the phone, which makes it the absolute most difficult key I have ever encountered on any phone, and I don't have large fingers by any means.

Even if the mute key were easy to press, it's in a location that's more difficult to get to when holding normally compared to the keypad, which means even though pre-.822 you had to press two buttons, those two buttons where very close to each other and on top of that, close to your left thumb when holding the phone naturally. Why RIM felt the need to completely revamp the keyboard lock function in such a small update when the prior method had been in use for years while also not providing a way for users to revert to prior functionality, especially considering its user base, is completely beyond me.Based on this and other usability and user experience failures within the Blackberry OS, my recommendation would be to fire and replace the whole Usability/UX team, but well, that precludes actually having one to begin with.

BB Bold 9700 :: 9700 Requires Password To Unlock Keyboard Regardless Of Security Timeout

Aug 9, 2010

I am working with a user who recently switched from a 9550 to a 9700 (verizon to at&t) for coverage reasons.Whenever he unlocks his keyboard (using the lock button on the top left of the device), he must enter his password to access his phone. The security timeout settings on his phone are set to 1 hour, but even if he locks the keyboard for 5 seconds, he still has to enter his password when unlocking it.The only time that the keyboard will lock and unlock without requiring a password is when it is entered/removed from the holster. We are using BES.I cannot replicate this issue with the 9650 or 9550. Unfortunately I don't have a 9700 at my disposal to play with.Is this a normal feature for the 9700?I've checked his encryption settings (disabled). We cannot disable the password function (mandated by BES policy). The issue is not that he has to enter his password, it's that he would prefer that a password not be needed unless the security timeout has expired.

So i was wondering are the batteries really identical in every way as claimed? and if they arent is it possible to swap the battery of my 9000 and expect a longer battery life? coz the one im having right now only seem to hold charge for about 15hours with fair usage on a 5.0 OS Zain Kuwait.

BB Bold 9700 :: Keyboard Lock & Convenience Key? (OS 5.0.0.586)

May 31, 2010

So my wife and I just picked up two new 9700s in white and black from T-Mobile with their buy-1-get-1 offer We're both already blackberry users. I was upgrading from a Pearl 8120, and she had a Curve 8320.After letting them charge for a while I finally fired them up to start playing with them.My first goal is to set them up as similar to our old phones as possible.

I checked the OS'es that shipped with each one and my black 9700 had 5.0.0.330 and hers had 5.0.0.586. So, I went to upgrade mine. But, while playing with some of the settings before upgrading I noticed that I was able to set my left convenience key to lock the keyboard on my 9700 but not on hers.In fact, the white 9700 that shipped with 5.0.0.586 didn't even have the lock keyboard icon in any of the menu screens at all.

I upgraded my OS to 5.0.0.586 and then went to check the left convenience key nothing.Went into settings and where it was previously set to Lock Keyboard, was now set to "Nothing".Is there no Lock Keyboard feature in OS 5.0.0.586? or am I seriously missing something?
