Nokia :: N97 : C Is Fast / E Is Not - What To Install On C Vs E Drive
Feb 2, 2010
it's obvious (although nokia doesn't document or express anything) that the ever so precious and small c-drive on n97 is a fast memory sitting on a fast and wide parallel type of bus - and the e-drive or "massmemory" has substantially slower access times, perhaps sitting on a limited speed serial type of bus. i believe many of the problems we experience with n97 is access violations, timeouts, etc, is due blindly installing everything on drive e in a desperate attempt to free up memory in c
i hope someone could have factual knowledge on what type of apps that either need to or should go on c instead of the slower e?
my best guesses has prompted my to install the following on c (to avoid any issues and to speed up the device): apibridge, communities client beta installer, communities, contacts group ds plugin, energy profiler, facebook installer, facebook, gmail, gravity, hs uutiset (widget), mediads plugin, mms ds plugin, nokia custom dictionary, nokia maps, ovi store client, point & find, seconupdater, service controllers, share location agent, share location, share location widget, sms ds plugin, web browser, wordlists recognizer dll, Internet
any apps that does not need to be on c to run fast and smooth?i'm down to 28,0mb on c, but that should be enough?i'm also thinking about moving my sms to c to avoid the access errors seen so many times (at least with fw 20)?
I've got a new 710. i tried updating drive to 3.0 but after downloading 50 % it says attention required. press here.So i uninstalled. whenever i tried reinstalling it, the same happens after downloading 50 % it says attention required. press here.So now i have no nokia drive on the phone. I even hard reset the phone.
I am getting issues while using Nokia Drive + Beta, my position isn't moving when driving or taking 5 - 10 seconds to update then just freezes again.
it seems that i set destination, it finds me and my destination fine, i click start, it gives the first direction fine, i start driving and nothing, "my position" on the display doesn't move, the only way i can update it is "stop navigation" then "set destination" again where it picks up my new location.
i've ensured location services are on, location within the app is turned on, i've checked my connection is "online"...are there any other settings i should be aware of?
speed alert is off, landmarks is off, map colours automatic updated maps navigation licence is global
i am using it in a windscreen mount that grips the top and bottom of the phone with little "arms", i've tried in both landscape and portrait orientation. bluetooth is on and hoping to be playing music at the same time eventually.
i have been having the general "freeze out" issue recently with the phone where i lock it and then it doesn't come back on without a button reset, 2 times since friday
I have been having problems with my N97 for the past 4 months but has got really bad the past few days. I've had the phone for 9 months and works reasonably well most of the time.I have been running out of space on the C drive now only 500kb. No matter what I do (clearing web cache, deleting apps, trying to remove anything I can see) it rapidily loses the space again. Mb's go in hrs and even after clearing web cache. Last night I upgraded the software version to v20.0.019 and also ran the tool (forgotten the name) that attempts to move things from C drive to other drives. My emails do not take much space, I can't move them to E drive as using UK Three's email client for work email and it says it has to use the C drive but don't hink that is the issue. As soon as I clear some space it goes again.
Also after installing this new version I can no longer use my Hotmail email account or any other email client on the phone even after deleting. Also the wireless Nokia keyboard I had has stopped working now with the new version.
It's about to become useless for email or anything very soon. I have a warranty and cover for it, just wondering if it sounds like I need to use that now as is about to become an expensive brick I think.
I bought a N86 RM-484 that is working very well. This morning i read in the newspaper the NOKIA gives for free the Navigator o its cellulars.I opened the Nokia WEB site and the news was real: you can free download maps for Smartphones (but non for N86). My N86 has its drive navigator with an original 10 days license (expires on 31/01/2010).
The walk navigator has a lifetime license.
I then updated the drive navigator license data, but no change. It keeps prompting me to buy a new licence for the drive navigatorr( 99 euro, one year).
It does not sound correct: is now free or not free the NOKIA navigator? Before trying Nokia Maps, I upgraded to 20.115 via software updater and it prompted me to install nokia maps 3.0, which I did.
I am just trying to transfer all apps from C: to the E: prior to v2.1 install. How do I do this as I can't seem to locate where they are actually stored in the file manager?
How can i free memory in c drive of N97.Presently it is showing 0 KB free in C drive inspite of the fact that the applications and media is installed on mass memory. Are there nay temp files that can be removed to free up space.
I use IMAP with my email account and set it up on my N97 (firmware v21.0.045). I have a lot of IMAP folders since i ready many mailing lists, they contain about 3000 mails at the moment. After setting it up on my N97 my C: went down from 15 MB to 1,4 MB! Although I set the memory to be used to E:. And IMAP does not download the whole mail, but just the header. So i wonder, why does IMAP on the N97 fill up C: so much? Why does it not completely use E: when told so? I use the internal mail client, no Nokia Messaging. Any hints on this?
Ok, I search the web and the forum, but did not find a definite answer on this. I installed X-plore in my N97 today. I had some issues this morning with the phone telling me there were memory issues and showing my 32 gb drive down to just 1.2 mb!!! My phone basically stopped working and I had to restarted about 4 times. I synced the phone and all of the sudden it was fine. (By the way, I installed X-plore after the issue).
Why is X-plore showing drives D and Z? What are those? Is D the ram? Does this mean my N97 is "Ok"?Now, the default file manager shows the following:
C: 16.2 free E: 21.2 gb free F: 7.4 gb free
It does not show the D drive? Can I improve my C drive? I've tried most of the suggestions on this site and others and I only get 16 mb free. I only have Nokia Maps installed and all the applications install on drive E. I don't know what else to do?
Ive configured it to a network connected HDD both locally (preferred option to access music collection for DNLA sharing) and also via HTTP but with no joy.
For some reason my C drive is getting more full. All installs are on the mass memory, emails and messages have been cleared out (gives back a couple of Meg) i'm down to 52Meg at the moment. I reformatted once (back to about 120Meg) and since then it's shrunk and continiues to get smaller!
I recently purchased Nokia c6-01. I am having one issue. I have installed some apps, Now my c: drive is full (1Mb free ) . & another drive is free. but i would like to increase the size of c: drive.how can Increase the c: drive (C: drive is Phone Memeroy drive).
I'm user of Nokia Lumia 800, there i have a GPS Nokia Drive and i'm more or less happy with it. I use it pretty often as i need to travel alot. But there is something that i dont really understand, is how can i use Nokia Drive without having internet connection, with this i mean no wifi or 3G or whatever so i dont have any connection, can i use it or not, and how?Because when im abroad, and normally my roaming is set off, but when i enter adress it cant find location etc, because i dont have connection, so i need to set my roamin on for just finding the location and then i set it off, but it is stupid tbh.I did predownload map where im in etc etc, altho i read on noika that it is possible to use it without connection but ... maybe i miss something?
I plan to use the Lumia 600 like a PDA. This means I am not putting any sim card into the device. Can Lumia 600 operates without the sim card? Other than the phone, sms functions that are disabled, are there any other functions that cannot be operated? In particular, can Nokia Drive 3.0 works without the SIM card?
I am trying to understand what is free and what isn't with the GPS on my Nokia 5800, which I bought last week. I'm in Ontario, Canada. I have downloaded maps and voice guidance from the Nokia / Ovi website, and my phone has now begun to talk to me, which is rather fun. I know I can use the GPS positioning stuff free of any charges if I don't have the aGPS setting on.
To my question(s): apparently, I now have a 90 day "Drive & Walk License" on my phone. What does that enable me to do? And what won't I be able to do once the 90 days is finished? Will the voice guidance disappear after 90 days, or what?
I really am having difficulty understanding what is free and forever, but, whatever it is, it seems like it's probably a good thing...!
Anyone know how to drive to an contact's address in the address book, without having to: 1. Find contact 2. Select 3. Write down address on a paper(!) 4. Open Ovi Maps 5. Choose "find places" 6. Enter the address written down on the paper. There has to be an easier way! I've tried to copy the address, but I cannot paste it into Ovi Maps.
I've installed OVI Maps 3.03 over Maps 3.01. Poor me! Now I have 2.5 Mb left on my C drive. Vs. 16 Mb as of yesterday. Should I add that "application manager - installed apps" does not start anymore?
I have always been careful that whenever I have loaded a new app onto my Nokia 5800 that I have chosen to load it onto my 8GB memory card in the phone but now I am greeted in the phones file manger that c: only has 1.5mb memory left! and the other day I even got a message that drice c was full even though I was loading an app to the SD card in the phone - If I go through the file manger to C: there are folders but are empty, and if I used another app such as y browser or xplore - I find files on c but cannot delete them (presumably because nokia has locked them so they cannot be removed or because they are system files) so is there anything I can do? - I don't really want to go down the route of doing a full reset/format of the phone if I can avoid it.
I noticed my phone going really slow, when I went into the c: folder on the included file manager of the phone it said I had only 3mb free space. After getting rid of bluetooth sis files in the messages folder and clearing the internet cahe I now have showing on drive c: free space of 23.2MB - good I suppose but I want to see if I can free up more space as the phone I believe does have around 80mb total (I know i should expect that system files of the phone will take up space but this much?) so anyway I suppose what I am is asking how I can free up more space as I cant see any more files I can delete on C: going through the inbuilt file manager and using windows file manager. I suppose I could use an app like y-browser or active file manager or whatever the app is called but its quite time consuming doing it through the phone, i would rather if anyone knows of an windows xp application where I can link up my Nokia 5800 by USB cable and run an XP app which will hunt out all files on C: including hidden/system and other files. i know I am going into dangerous terrotory of seeing system files and deleting them and bricking the phone but if I could see some hidden pictures and sound that I dont use and they are not tied to system files then I could delete them and get some more files back on C: - or has anyone know what else I could clear on the phone to give me back more than 23mb?
Is there anyway to reduce my n97 C drive without resetting because I only have 29.3 mb left after I installed Microsoft Silver light. Also I have Qt installed which is 6mb -does anyone have Qt installed?-thanks, i thought n97 will have more memory space after installing firmware v22
Is it possible to raise the house outlines on the map to a third dimension where possible? At the moment only 3D objects, specially made, are seen in the phone, but it would be nice to see also other regular buildings on a constant 3D level.
How to edit favourites, i.e. How to delete or change name. As an example, when saving your position it seems that the name used on the favourite is taken from the map and if the map is not updated with the correct adress I need to change this (this is a fact with my home adress). Further more I cannot find avway to delete a saved favourie.
if Nokia Drive route instructions can be set to play to a Bluetooth headset or similar...I'm using a lumia 800 and have tried when connected to variety of kit.
I've tried many navigation applications and Nokia Drive holds up rather well. But one area I noticed it seems off compared to many others is it seems to favor or use unknown names compared to other apps. It often calls out street names that are not marked as such.
For instance in Florida it seems to be calling I-95 SR 9. After a little research I found the SR 9 is a hidden designation that isn't marked by any road signs.
So I finally tried to use Nokia Drive on a real trip (in New Jersey, USA) and I've noticed that the software often seems stuck on returning you to the originally plotted route when you deviate from it, instead of finding the best remaining route based on the new location. I'll give details for my particular trip in case this is a local issue.
We decided to take the NJ Turnpike to route 18 to River Road to Interstate 287 instead of 295 to 206 to 287 as Nokia Drive recommended (the routes are roughly equivalent in travel time, so I don't fault this initial route selection). When we entered the Turnpike, the new route kept trying to get us to 295 until we passed Exit 7 (In reality, past Exit 5 there isa considerable penalty to getting off the turnpike and onto I 295).
Finally, after Exit 7 it decided we should stay on the turnpike and get to 287 directly using Exit 10 (This too is roughly equivalent in travel time, so it was a reasonable suggestion). Once we took Exit 9 to route 18 instead it picked a different route than the one we are familiar with and this is where the biggest problem occurred. The route it suggested would enter 287 North at Exit 7, while the route we took entered 287 at Exit 9. It kept insisting we get back on its rout and get on at exit 7 to the point that when we were about to enter 287 at exit 9, it told us to get onto 287 *south* and take it to exit 7 where we would exit the highway and immediately re-enter it northbound. This is rediculous and should never have been suggested.
Am I right in my assessment that the software tries to stick to the original route instead of calculating a new one on the spot? What possible advantage can there be in doing it this way?
I have a Nokia Lumia 800 with Nokia Drive 3 and using it in India. I have installed about 4 maps already on it, but if I try to install any map now the download suddenly stops at the 35-40 MB mark, and just goes to the home screen. The Nokia Drive isn't even running in the background and I have to try again. I tried by downloading maps of multiple locations, some 50 MB, some 70 MB, some 100, and the same problem persists.
