IPhone :: 4 Is Shutting Itself Off Intermittently?
May 7, 2012
My iPhone 4 developed a problem where it shuts itself off intermittently, sometimes at night when it is unattended (and yes, the battery was fully charged). It is my 2nd iPhone 4 with this problem, and from what I see on this forum, not an uncommon problem with this device. Apparently it is a known hardware issue with some iPhone's and the refurbished units they use as replacement devices have not been expunged of this circuit board demon.
Rather than swap out my phone for a new one (or even another refurb), I was given the possible explanations:An application is crashing the OS. (I interpret this statement as IOS 5 is no further evolved than Windows 3.1 where an app can crash the entire OS)An application may be using too much memory causing the phone to shut down (Really? No OS protection or throttling to prevent this?)A 3rd party application might have had a bad update in the App Store and Apple does not review updates (Really? So if I publish an app in the store, I can then update it with miscellaneous viruses and malware? Whoo Hoo)It could be usage (Translation: using an iPhone 4 to play music, run apps and make phone calls may cause the device to fail. Sounds like a breach of Warranty for Fitness of Intended Purpose) I am not an Apple hater. I just want my phone replaced with a non-defective device. I don't appreciate the total run-around and denial of responsibility on Apple's part.

The screen on my brand new iPhone 5S 32GB keeps blacking out intermittently. This sometimes happens I turn the phone from portrait to landscape, or sometimes when the keyboard is open and I try to type the letter ‘a’. Each blackout lasts less than a second and everything else appears to function normally, but it is impossible to use the keyboard in landscape mode sometimes as certain key presses black the screen out.Â

iPhone 3GS intermittently drops 3G and displays SOS Only. A reset fixes it for a short while before it fails again. I have been having this problem for a while, and have tried many resets and restore, clearing the phone, using the phone as a 'new' iphone with no apps or user data, and it always fails the same way. Other phones in the area on the same carrier display full signal strength when this happens. Following a reset, the phone always works correctly for a period (of between 1 minute and 1 day), then fails again. I suspect I have a hardware fault.

My iPhone 5s started to only ring intermittently after I took the latest iOS update awhile back. Same thing with texts, too. I have tried completely wiping the phone and then reload it via iCloud, but it just keeps doing the same thing.

Just upgraded my IPhone 4 to IOS 5.1. Since then, the home button sometimes does not work. Since I've never had a problem with my phone, and no new apps were added, it looks like a software glitch to me.

Since I do a lot of driving, I tend to tap the speakerphone button and voice my text message instead of taking my eyes off the road so I can type but here lately my phone cannot understand what I am saying or completely types out something I didn't even say! What is up with this? I do make sure I speak slow and clearly and it will still mess up!

I have an iPhone 4s and never had any problems but last night my iPhone stopped receiving text messages (from other iPhone users and other phone types). I messed around with my settings and my text messages started appearing again (although I can't remember what I pressed now)! I got a few people to send test text messages and I received these but again this evening I've stopped receiving text messages again.

I have an iPhone 3gs 16gig and the I broke the screen, the digitizer worked for a while so I just kept using it with the cracks on it. after the digitizer stopped working I did a full backup and went in to a local shop and had the screen and digitizer replaced. I then came home and did a restore and that gave me ios5.1. The phone worked great for a day then the touch screen started to stop working after about 10-30 seconds of use. I cant do anything with the phone without having to lock the screen and unlock it (sometimes that works, and sometimes I have to do that a few times because the touch screen doesn't work to unlock the phone) to continue using my phone.I am thinking it is because I upgraded to ios5.1, or is it a bad digitizer?

I purchased an iphone over kijiji locked to rogers and jailbroken to 3.1.2. During my days of owning it i found that the signal would drop randomly to 0 bars and proceed to "searching" to look for a network.. Ive looked this issue up plentiful over these forums and found that blacksnow seemed to be the culprit. After going through cydia i found that blacksnow was installed so i uninstalled it. I thought the problem was solved but a couple of minutes later after using apps that use 3g the connection dropped again. I dont know how this phone was jailbroken. its the 3gs with the old bootrom. ive never had this issue with my 3g phone. I restored again using redsnow and still same problems.

My Torch is about 9 months old. I had no problems with it until about a month ago. It constantly reboots. It is not software. Sometimes when you close the slider, it goes dead and reboots. I have now seen that if the slider is open and you softly wiggle the screen part it reboots.. not always.. This tells me that it is a hardware problem. A factory fault if you ask me. My wife's Torch is 2 months old. Same problem. Also reboots for nothing. Work colleague, also a torch. Just over a year old. Same problem. Reboots 4 or 5 times a day. This is definitely not software. If you put it down too hard, or keep it in your pocket. A lot of the time it reboots...

I have a strange problem which appears to be random. Occasionally it turns itself off for no reason. Occasionally when I slide it open to write sms it turns itself off.Battery is properly seated and battery has charge. These are not low battery conditions. Does anyone else suffer similar problems? How do you prove this to LG as it is random and difficult to replicate?

I've had my HTC Desire HD for just under 2 weeks and it keeps turning itself off. It goes through phases - it will be ok for a couple of days then today for example - I keep putting it to one side after using it and then pick it up again and it has turned off. Today - it is restarting to the White / Green HTC logo screen then turning right off again. But then intermittently it is staying on for a little bit.

My iPhone 3gs keeps turning itself off, then the apple logo turns up for like 3 minutes, and then it goes onto the lock screen and i go to unlock it and it just turns itself off again. It doesnt find reception and the battery goes in like 1 hour from 100% to 0. It also gets really really hot.

Just bought it less than a week ago, from the Apple store. It's shut down on its own twice - just going straight off. Plus has rebooted alone at least once that I know of. Is this defective or is there a software problem with the OS?

Hopefully someone knows the answer to this but my N73, which us up to date firmware, has today begun flashing an icon on the desktop which I don't recognise.
Apologies for the appalling mock-up but it seemed a good way of trying to describe it. It's a grey square with a phone receiver flashing green and yellow in the middle. There also appears to be a letter D to the bottom right hand corner.URL... and URL...It's very odd, flashes for a few seconds and then disappears.

The trackpad on my Blackberry Bold 9700 works intermittently. I've:
- Updated the software OS 6.
- Done a hard reset.
- Done multiple soft resets.
I also tried cleaning the trackpad with paper (read somewhere that it's the oils on fingers that causes the problem).

I just got a Lumia 950, and I'm not very happy .. I had my previous Lumia for 2.5 years with no issues .. I'm consistently losing the sound notifications on everything (ie: messaging, alarms, calendar, mail, etc).
I have gone through all of the banner checks, setting everything to "default sound", and consistently having to reset this stupid phone to get the sound to work for only a couple of days, before it goes away again, and I have to go through the process again ...

Over the last week or so when I start up the camera it gets stuck at the "Loading...." screen. When it first started it happened about every other time I started the camera, but is gradually becoming more frequent and sometimes I cant get it to work at all unless I restart the phone and even then it's not certain.
The camera mechanism itself doesn't seem to be making any strange or loud noises when this happens, so that leads me to think its probably not hardware related. Between this and my wifi only wanting to connect when it feels like it I'm just about at the end of my rope with what started out as a great phone.

My wife's Nokia Lumia 1020 still works like a champion, except that she can't take video.
I can switch on the "Lumia Camera" app fine, and use the rotary symbols at the right to switch to video mode. However, quite frequently, pressing the video symbol will not start recording; the countdown will stay at 00:00. This only happens sometimes though. There's 20GB free so storage isn't the issue.

So about a week ago, a vertical strip of my digitizer stopped working, right through the "n" and "j" buttons on the keyboard. I looked into getting it replaced and was quoted around $150, which seems a bit steep for a phone I only plan on keeping until the N5 (2015) drops in a couple of months. Cut to this weekend and once or twice that portion of the digitizer started working again, but only for a few minutes at a time. So it looks like it may not be a hard failure. Could it just be a loose connector?

Recently I've noticed I'll be in the middle of the call with the in call volume on max (which is very much needed on this phone...I don't have hearing problems ). Then every now and then the volume drops to 1/3 of maximum and I have to hold the volume up to bring it back to max.
(I've only seen references to ringing volume changing erratically, not in call volume) . My phone is rooted, but with stock ROM.

I've only had my S5 for a couple months now. About a month ago, I got an OTA update to 4.4.4, and since then my lock screen wallpaper will occasionally disappear and be replaced by a solid black background. All the text/graphics (clock, step counter, notification bar) will still be there, white letters on a black field. The first time was about a week after the OTA, and it's happened 4-5 times so far.
When it goes black, I am no longer able to change the lock screen wallpaper. The menu comes up, and I can see all the pictures available, but selecting one and hitting "Set Wallpaper" simply returns me to the home screen without actually making the change. The black wallpaper will persist until I restart the phone. I have seen no other issues of any kind from the phone when the anomaly occurs, and my home screen wallpaper (which is different from my lock screen) is unaffected.

My phone has been acting up since installing the latest iOS 7.1.1. The back lighting for the screen works intermittetly. I have been able to get it to come back on by turning the phone off and back on, but not every time. Once I enabled VoiceOver through Siri and turned ScreenCurtain On and Off. Other times, just clicking the home button and a few times on a notification that would turn the back lighting on. The phone seems to want to respond to turning the back lighting on, but does not do it every time it should. It usually takes 10 - 30 minutes of me working with it to get it to come back on. The phone has not been dropped and is in an Otterbox case.

Ive never dropped or spilled anything on my phone, and i've only had it for less than 7 months. It will randomly turn off and I will try to restart it. It freezes on the restart screen so i usually have to restart it again. Also, sometimes the screen will spit for a couple of seconds but thats minor compared to it shutting off on me 5 times a day. Im thinking its a hardware glitch, but at the same time i'm not very tech savvy! Im wondering if i have to pay for it and what's the process of them fixing/replacing my phone? Im a student and everything i have is on my phone so im really hoping i wont be without a phone for a week or so just so they can figure out the problem!
