View 1 RepliesMy daughter's new 8520 doesn't seem to be able to send or receive BBMs, has this got something to do with the fact the GPRS only comes up as "gprs" in lower case in the top right-hand corner of the screen on the phone?

Also the wifi indicator stays grayed out even when it is working when it should go white (according to the internet this is to do with me not having a "Blackberry Internet Service Plan" )I have a 2 day old factory fresh 8520 , on virgin(uk) pay as you go

I have just taken delivery of my new 8520. I bought it for its Internet, and more so, WI-FI capabilities. However I am due to go on holiday and due to the cost of getting data in a foreign country would like to totally disable the GPRS data, as not to incur a huge bill. I would however like to still be able to access internet, Via WI-Fi, when in a free wifi hotspot or something running off wifi (hotel internet at 1 euro a hour etc)
I have tried this at home on my home router with what I think is GPRS off, wifi enabled, and it informs me I need GPRS on to access WIFI. Being a coms engineer, I can’t understand in anyway shape or form how one is dependant on the other, being they are totally different protocols.
I recently bought my first Blackberry smartphone, The Blackberry Curve 8520. I was really impressed with the phone at such a cheap price since I am a teen, the 8520 is perfect for me. But I downloaded a few apps which I can use at home when theres wifi but i cannot use the Twitter, Facebook, UberTwitter apps when not at home (No wifi). Does anyone have the same problems? When i try to log in or connect without Wifi, It does not connect. And on Ubertwitter, The app keeps running but it doesnt connect to gprs/wap. Anyone have the same problems or know how to change the settings so that i can use the apps with GPRS/WAP Please give me your suggestions and/or solutions/help.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Curve 8520 from TMobile (US).I also had a Pearl 8100 from Fido (Canada).I got the Curve unlocked and want to use it on the Fido network instead of the Pearl. I seem to have gotten everything working on the Curve, except for the email.I had the same email accounts (gmail, hotmail) set up on both phones, but for some reason now that I've switched over to the Curve on the Fido network, I can't send or receive email.I've checked all my settings, and they seem right.I can access the web, my Wi-Fi is set up, and I can send & receive texts. Anyone have any ideas about this email problem? Also, I can't remember my account username for the BB website to access my account online to change the email. When I ask to send my password, it says it has been sent to my BB, but of course I can't receive email, so I'm not getting it.

View 4 Replies View RelatedMy husband got a curve 8530 the other day. All of the people in his address book have "classic ringer" as their custom ring tone along with the volume set about midway like its some kind of default setting. I have tried changing the profiles/ringtones and creating new ones (with different tones) this does not change the ringer for those 80+ people. In the Set Contact Alert menu there are only 3 people with a custom tone showing. The Classic Ring is not loud enough for him to hear and no matter how I try to change the default ringer it does not change the ring for the contact list.I've done a battery pull, no change.Updated it to newest OS.Contact list was imported from a Storm 2(he likes having actual buttons to push).
Am I missing something or 1) shouldn't all those people show up in the Set Contact Alert Menu, if there is a custom tone set up or 2) shouldn't their default change if I change the default for the phone.I haven't checked all of them, but did check at least 10 and regardless of what I do they're still the same. Ringer shows Classic all other options say active profile. Is there any way I can change their default ringer without having to give each one a custom ring--too time consuming?
I have an unlocked TELUS Storm playing GSM on a Philippines carrier called Smart. The data connection and call reception quality here has been nothing but horrible. Dropped calls/Calls failed, etc are pretty rampant around here (no matter what part of town you're in)
Anyway, I'd _like_ to think it may be something to do with the fact that the device is not Smart authorized/sold device. However, the backward nature of cellphone networks here could argue me down.
Long story short, now that you know my troubles.. when I'm on a full GPRS/EDGE connection, I pull up the browser. Once I start getting ready to type in a URL, the GPRS/EDGE goes to gprs/edge. It happens about 98% of the time. This same thing happens when I go to URL from an email/sms etc. I can't seem to figure it out. I've been on .328, but upgrading to .419 as we speak. Thoughts would be nice.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have managed to get a low cost GPRS plan enabled on my blackberry 9300 curve device. With this I am able to use Google maps for navigation and Opera for general browsing.
However I am unable to use BB specific applications like LinkedIn and Facebook and apparently the root cause seems that BB browser does not connect via GPRS. It always needs BIS/BES. Is there a way to get around this and start using BB browser with the general GPRS plan.
I am using OS version 6.0.0.584.
I want to ask abut any IM that works without having BIS or BES on my blackberry 8520 Why I'm not using BIS if you ask, because the BIS is a little bit expensive here.
I've tried WindowsLiveMessenger - YahooMess for blackberry and they will only work on BIS.
I've tried ebuddy, but there's no ebuddy for blackberry. So I have to use ebuddyLITE and it is not great for chatting (refreshing all the time and its not user friendly)
Is there any suggestion for another IM that works only on normal GPRS? [without activating BIS]
My Balckberry Curve 8520 never picks up a 3 G signal even though I am in a 3G area and my colleagues pick up the 3G signal with no issue.

since 1 week i have discountinued with the service for some reasons and i have noticed that the balance has started geting deducted again ! and it follows a specific pattern every hour at exactly 4 mins passed (10:04 , 11:04, 12:04) the handset is trying to acces gprs i mean there r no 3rd party app installed on my fone except for foursquare, google maps, and bloomberg mobile!

My Curve 8520 (v5.0.0.681) on O2-UK has switched to GSM since last Friday (16th).Initially it happened to my girlfriend's Curve 8520, then mine and now it has happened to her sisters Curve 9300.
It has not happened to my girlfriend's parents Curve 9300. I also work 50 miles from home and it's not working so it's not a single tower issue. I have tried pulling the battery, reinstalling the software and a security wipe.
I contacted my carrier (O2-UK) who state that it's not a problem with their network and that they have had a lot of reports of the same issue in this past week, they're saying it's a Blackberry issue.
I me using bb 8520 curve i have deactivate the data service from my phone but i don't want to switch of my network from manage connections i want to use both wifi and network because my cell should be switch on 24/7 in short i want to use wifi along with making and recieving calls
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a BB 8900 curve which has not been used before. The carrier Vodafone has enabled my BB service and I should have full data. However, the device is showing gprs and not GPRS and the service books are not downloading as a result.
When I put my SIm in a mates BB 8900 it does show as full GPRS.is there a setting in the device that allows partial data service that I need to change to give me full data, or do I just have another faulty 8900 device?
In the past month or so my sisters blackberry curve 9300 changed from being at GPRS/EDGE to GSM and she cannot get access to the internet at all, so she has no facebook, bbm, email or browser etc. and this is even when she is connected to our wifi at home. We have tried rebooting it several times by taking out the battery and also the sim card but this has not helped. We took the phone back to the O2 shop where it was purchased and they gave her a new sim card and when this didnt work she went back again and the said that because she was roaming the bolt ons was cancelled and they set that up again. However the phone is still on GSM and so this hasnt helped. When I was looking thorugh the phone trying to see if there was anything I could do to change it back to GPRS I noticed that in the service status it says that blackberry internet service is not connected.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy BB9300 curve runs with OS5, and I'musing airtel India carrier. I don't have BIS plan,I'm using normal gprs plan to run third partyapps like opera and whatsapp. These apps works well with gprs, but theproblem is, it suddenly stops working sayingthat no internet connection is available. Then tofix this I've 2 do a battery pull(hard reset) everytime.I've also upgraded to OS6, but the above problem still remains. In my observation this problem is maximum whenever I'm travelling and where the network connection will disconnect and reconnect frequently.
