BB Bold :: Get Phone To Work In Europe?
Mar 13, 2012
I will be traveling to Germany, France, Switzerland, and Italy soon and I really need my cell phone to work while I'm there. I have a Blackberry Bold 9780 and my carrier is T-Mobile. I mostly just need to use the internet, apps, mapping, etc. Of course I would like to take advantage of the wifi that some restaurants and hotels offer.

I bought a used iphone4 in the US. It was supposed to be an officially unlocked phone (BB 04.11.08) and I verified this by inserting a T-Mobile US sim card - I saw the network name on the screen, so I was positive that i was not screwed up. When I returned to Europe with the phone, I put a T-Mobile Hungary SIM card in it - and it didn't work: Invalid SIM card... Can it be still locked? Is there something like a region lock? If I have not seen the TMO US sim card working, I would be sure that this phone is still locked to AT&T..

Has anyone had any experience using an i9000 in Canada on either of the three big networks (Bell, Rogers and Telus)? What I need to know is if it'll work well in HSDPA mode given that it only has one (1900) of the two required Canadian HSDPA bands (850 and 1900). What bothers me it that it looks like the one Bell is launching (the "Vibrant") has only two HSDPA bands instead of three, and I really need the European band as well (2100). Hence Bell's Vibrant won't work in HSDPA mode in Europe.

My wife and I own iPhone 4S phones and will be traveling with them to England for the first time this coming holiday season. We have Verizon service with international calling enabled, and intend to use Verizon's international calling plan for the period while we are to be traveling (no swapping for European telco SIM cards). We each have extensive Contacts lists in our phones, and both are synced to our Address Books on our home iMacs. We have our US contacts memorized in the standard area code + number format, and similarly we have our Brit friends' cell and home phone numbers memorized in the "011" (US exit code) "44" (England country code) + number format. With that we can of course call US numbers as normal and the Brits just fine while here in the US. But when we are overseas I suspect we would need a different number sequence to connect with family back here in the US if needed, and we certainly couldn't call the English phone numbers from within England using the 011-44 prefix before their numbers. Is there anyway to prepare for that situation short of re-entering a bunch of phone numbers for while we are away, and then changing it all back again when we return a few weeks later? How do people who travel overseas frequently, say on business, handle this? Multiple numbers in different formats for each Contact?

I have (accidentally) rec'd calls at 30,000 ft on a delta plane with my network option on wifi only and having logged on to Deltas onboard wifi. This led me to believe that it is possible to make and recieve calls anywhere in the world as long as I am in a hot spot.
I have contacted my carrier, T-mobile, and have rec'd mixed signals from them. I am about to depart for spain and was thinking as long as I set my phone to wifi only, I should be able to make, recieve calls and data without incurring any roaming charges since it is all data or VoIP via the web.

When I try to update or do anything on my phone that requires me to verify my BB ID, it tells me to 'Enter the user name associated with this Smartphone!I don't understand as I am using my BBID that works on the laptop. It is the only email address that it could possibly be & when I try anything else I get an error message & loose a 'go' at attempting to login.

I am in "American" Samoa and bought a local Blue Sky sim card. Phone works great for local calls and LD to USA mainland at a much less cost per minute than Verizon. Internet browser works, but I can not receive and send email.Yes, I have access to a wireless network and am connected to it. Other, "I" phone gets email here. Wonder why the Blackberry does not?

I have been a crackberry user since 1999.I have also been on my corporate Blackberry server for as long as I can remember so I am used to everything being wireless and integrated.Well, the company I am going to does not have the BB server. They do have Outlook Web so I know I can setup my 9700 to "connect" via the OWA service using BIS. My question is for those who do this in a "corporate" environment...
*How well does the Calendar syncing work? Can I really Accept the invite in my BB and then find it properly sync to my calendar when I plug in?
*I am assuming that I won't have the "read message reconciliation" available so is it true I won't have a copy of my Sent Mail from my BB in Outlook when I go back to my desk?
*Back to the calendar, if I accept the invite from my BB, I assume the invite is still in my Outlook Inbox in an "un-accepted" state. Any issues here with accepting it a second time?
*I assume Contacts will sync (not as big a deal)
The company told me "most of the users have an iPhone" and I know iPhone works (no wonder everone I interviewed with had one...). I am just not sure I want to go there. So I am looking for insight from the community before I give up my 10-year passion for the BB and go to an iPhone ((shudder)).

The phone shows 3g and full bars of service, but whenever I try to call with it, there's no sound until the "call failed' tone goes. No ringing, nothing. The tone plays fine, as do music and videos, but texts and calls cannot be sent or received. Considering it got wet recently (I stuck in rice for a few days), there may be some corrosion or something.

I've come to dread restarting my phone (after deleting an app, to free up space). Every time I pull the battery, it's like playing russian roulette with my phone. When it restarts, it goes back to that original wallpaper that my bb bold2 had, and then the trackpad won't work. Even if I click down once to activate the trackpad, nothing moves on my screen. It almost always ends with me having to do a second battery pull, which is really nerve-wracking. It's like there's some sort of SEVERE lag going on. And if it does begin to work after a battery pull, it takes like 6 minutes to begin working.

Hi Folks - I have some ideas, but I'd like to get opinions on how to best use mine and my girlfriend's iPhones while we are in Europe for a few weeks. (Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria, Switzerland)
What we have:
GF: iPhone 3G / 8GB | 3.1.2, Jailbroken, not unlocked. 4.26.08 baseband
Me: iPhone 3GS / 32GB | 3.1.2, Jailbroken, tethered, not unlocked, 5.11.07 baseband
What I would like to do: (Other suggestions welcome!)
Instead of getting raped by AT&T, I would like to buy a pay-as-you-go or other local SIM for each phone, so she and I can talk for free to each other, and still make calls locally & back home. I'd also like some sort of data plan that's reasonable while we're there.
Other ideas:
1. leave iPhones at home and buy prepaid Euro phones?
2. Use an AT&T International program?

as many people on this board should know; in other countries, namely European ones, they have much more consumer friendly laws/practices regarding unlocking phones. in most of them they are required to unlock your iPhone for free after they recoup the subsidy or at the very least after your contract is up. the specific laws by country .when they do this they take your IMEI number from your specific iphone, contact apple in some way, and apple plugs your IMEI into the itunes servers, and the next time you plug your iphone into itunes while you have an internet connection it unlocks your iphone permanently forever (so long as your IMEI number stays on file i suppose).in America we have no laws regarding locking/unlocking phones, aside from the dmca amendment (clarification) from November 2006 that expires in three years that says Unlocking your phone yourself is legal (was it renewed?).
In practice in the usa every phone i cant think of either has an unlock code that you can input into the device at any time to unlock it, or the cell company will unlock it for you at the end of your contract or sometimes if you are traveling internationally. of course, the iPhone is the ONE PHONE that at&t refuses to unlock after the contract, unlike its other phones. when the iphone first came out they said they would but a day later their spokesperson had to publicly state he was wrong and that they would NOT unlock iphones under ANY circumstance and that has been the case ever since. even the phones you can buy without a contract are locked to at&t.***my question is this: in some countries you can pay and have your iphone unlocked at any time. if i take my American iphone to Europe can i pay to have my phone "officially" unlocked? will they refuse to do it unless i am on their European network? will apple reject my IMEI because they know its activated to USA at&t and purchased in America with an at&t contract? it seems like even the newest jailbreak and unlock (blackra1n, blacksn0w) are buggy, so i don’t want to do it. all i really care about is being able to use foreign sim cards and not getting but traped by having to use at&t's overpriced international plan. the international plan DOES NOT include data roaming (or does it not include data at all?), and your email updates automatically. i know you can turn off data roaming but there have been reports of the switch magically turning itself on. even if you accidently slide it on for a second and you switch it off if your iphone dls ONE MEGABYTE of data during that time it could cost 27 dollars!!!
also, this horrific nightmare scenario could happen. I’m not sure if at&t or apple or the gsm carrier in Bermuda fixed this, and i know all you have to do is explain what happened to at&t in the above case and they will zero out your bill but its still a monumental headache. also there have been hazy reports of this happening to other people in other countries. I am a big nerd and very tech savy and i LOVE cellphones, i previously had an enV with hacked free internet and free navigation. i consider the inability to "officially" unlock American iphones to be its biggest drawback, and a BIG one at that. after the contract they should have to offer you an unlock, not doing so creates tech waste. forcing people to get expensive international plans that don’t even include data, a basic function of the iphone, is VERY greedy of at&t.

I've been waiting for this phone for a while to replace my iPhone and don't really want to wait to find out when/if this phone will make it to the US. I now want to try to order one from an online site from the UK. I just had a few questions for people who have had experience with this:
1. Will the software and updating run into any problems since I am in a different region?
2. Will any of the features no longer work once I pop my sim card in? Things like texting, surfing the net, etc. Will these things require special setup to work?
Any other potential roadblocks I might run into trying to get this device to fully function with AT&T?

I'm new here so please forgive me any mistakes. I recently bought Nokia 6760 and I wanted to update Europe Maps (that's 2.2GB) As i had 2GB card in the phone, i changed it for 4GB SDHC, all files copied and still 3.6GB free space on the card. Now Ovi maps is telling me there's not enough space on the card to copy the Europe Maps, why?

Again, I am starting the topic of Nokia Map Loader. I have read all the topics regarding this issue here and on other forums, nothing works for me. I can't seem to have a way of downloading the Europe maps, when I go to the Pc Suite mode, the phone drive is visible and download is almost possible but when I choose a map, even a small one, the disc space information shows e.g. -53MB available space. If I go to the mass storage mode, in accordance with the instructions here:
http://europe.nokia.com/support/product-support/maps-support/compatibility-and-download#/nokia-n900/
I get the info message: One of the phones is connected in mass storage mode... And when I tick the info box, waiting for phone appears and nothing happens. Map loading to N900 is a JOKE my friends. If anybody can help me, I'd be grateful. I have tried deleting the cities folder and then recreating it once more. My PC operating system is WIndows 7.

I've got German T-Mobile N97. I've been trying to "unlock" Maps on it ever since I saw that "Maps are free" ad. I've survived a couple of updates since than but nothing seams to happen. I keep getting "Your Europe navigation license has expired on X.X.X. Buy new license to continue suing navigation?" If I say Yes, I get prompted to pay fee for a month or a year. If I say No, voice guidance closes. Any idea why is this so and what can I do to get voice guidance working? Both Ovi Suite and N97 seam to be up to date: 2.2.0.245/21.0.045.

I'm planning on bying an iPhone 4S in an Apple Store in the US. However, I live in Germany.I'm going to get an unlocked one (that is to say SIM lock free) and was just going to use my German SIM card from my german contract.Do you know if that's possible? I wasn't quite sure of what to make of the CMDS-carrier thing Apple wrote about the usability out of the US. In Germany we don't have different kind of carriers. There is no real equivalent to AT&T or Verizon in the States. What about the frequencies? Does the American iPhone support european frequencies?

The microphone on my iPhone (serial xxxxxxx) dysfunction (metallic noises, voices inaudible) but I can not join Apple for free. Why? (with competing brands people can (I work in a high school and I see many cases)).Of course I did a restore to 5.1.1 (9B206).And the dysfunction remain when I use the Apple in-ear headphone kit or when I use a bluetooth kit. When I call 0805 540 003 a robot ask me to pay 35€ just to speak with a human. Again, the warranty is 2 years in Europe. And the first Apple center is 180km away from home.
