I bought a first generation iPhone from a friend. When I turn it on, it says I have to connect it to iTunes to activate it. I do not want to buy a data plan since I am in an area where wi-fi is abundant.
My old iPhone worked without the data plan, but it's screen started having problems (another post), so there is no issue with using an iPhone without a data plan.
How should I go about this? I unlocked my previous phone with ZiPhone, should I do the same?
Just wanted to let everyone know that if for whatever reason you still have the dock for the original 1st generation iPhone (silver back & edge only) it works great as a dock for the just released iPhone 4.

But here's what I'd love to see happen in the future. Post your ideas as well...
- iChat compatibility
- Skype compatibility
- Other phones adopting the protocol to make it possible to talk to pretty much anyone regardless of phone type
- 3G connectivity
- 3 Way Video Chat

I have a 1st generation iPhone that was unlocked and jailbroken with ZiPhone. One day I was typing a text message/using internet (can't recall specifically) and a bunch of random keys popped up (as they do when you type) even though I had not pressed anything, and since then a portion of the screen no longer works. This portion is (in the context of text messaging), the top row of the keyboard, and the area where you have the actual message (hence I cannot press 'send').
I repeatedly tried the reset technique involving holding the home button and power button, but had no results. Recently I have reset the home screen and now have a "how to rearrange home screen icons" thing in the middle of my screen whenever I turn the phone on, and I cannot press "ok" due to the problems in the screen. Any idea what the problem may be, or what I can do about it?
my iPhone is blocked due to wrong passwords. I haven't used it for a while because I used a blackberry. Now I'm fed up with blackberry so want to use my iPhone again.
My iPhone says I should connect to iTunes but when I try it tells me the phone is blocked. What do I need to do?

I had recently jailbroken my phone and it was working perfectly fine.
I download Installous from Cydia and installed many cracked apps (about 20). I was using one of them one day when all of a sudden, the iPhone froze.
I did a hard reboot and I turned it back on. All I saw after that was the apple logo, then the black screen before the password screen, and then the apple logo again with the spinning wheel. This pattern continued for a while. I tried several more hard reboots but the same problem continued.
I connected it to my computer and then tried turning it on and it worked for a while. I used the same app and the phone worked fine. However, when I locked my phone after that and tried to put my password in later, the phone froze. I did a hard reboot and the same pattern of logo, black, then logo w/ spinning wheel occurred.
Please help me. How do I fix this problem without doing an iTunes restore (I stupidly didn't back anything up.

Can I use someone else's upgrade? Yes, this is called an "upgrade swap". AT&T will allow you to upgrade any line to receive a new phone. You can then activate that phone on any phone line you like. Apple is able to do this in store also, but it requires a bit more time since they have to call AT&T first. If you pre-order and recieve the phone by mail, you will need to contact AT&T to let them know that you will be activating the phone on another line."
My current situation:
I am on a family plan with a total of two lines. My line is not eligible until 7/23, so all I can get is "early upgrade pricing". My mom's line is currently eligible for "full upgrade pricing". I am planning on using my mom's upgrade to get an iPhone 4. I want to preorder the phone from Apple.com on the 15th, and hopefully receive it the afternoon of the 24th. From my understanding, the microSIM that ships with the phone will be programmed for the line whose upgrade was used. However, the iPhone Upgrade Guide makes it sound like I can call AT&T once I receive the phone (and before I activate it), and have AT&T switch the microSIM from my mom's line to mine. Is this possible?

I have a jailbroken IPhone 3gs running 3.1.3, the main reason I jailbroke was so I could disable cellular data and not pay the 25 a month. I want to upgrade to something above 4.0. now I know in 4.0 or newer you can turn off cellular data but does that do the same thing as the profile. I have on my phone that disables the data? Also is there a way to upgrade to 4.0 or 4.10 so I can jailbreak again?
View 11 Replies View RelatedSo I know someone who was jailbroken and unlocked on 3.1.2, but he did a reset all settings and content, and it put in him a reboot loop, so the phone wont start. So, I'm trying to find out if there is anyway to restore the iphone to 3.1.2, without losing the unlock. His SHSH are saved on cydia.I am with AT&T so when I upgraded to 3.1.3, and downgraded to 3.1.2 I didn't need an unlock. So I think the process would be different, right?Or is it as easy as doing a shift+restore through iTunes with the modded Hosts file? Or will that mess with any of the unlock?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI do not recall seeing/reading my question anywhere the past few weeks regarding the new OS 4 (whenever it comes out):
Question: Will my iPhone 3GS (purchased Sep2009) be able to upgrade from 3.0 to 4.0?If the answer is "no", does anyone know if Apple plans to offer some of the 4.0 enhancements as a 3.x patch for us 7-month old owners?
Based on the leaked images will you upgrade your current iPhone to the next generation or will you stick with what you have?
View 24 Replies View RelatedFeels the same due to weight, even though it's 24% smaller width. I thought I liked the design of my old 3G, but the new iPhone 4 is a beauty. Biggest complaint with the 3G was the amount of time it took to load apps, just horrendous. Everything on the 4G is just faster and snappier within micro-seconds. HD Video cam, haven't used it much yet but can see myself using it often vs. not having one on the 3G. Photos, awesome as always and the LED flash will help out a ton.
In summary, after the excitement of opening the package and being among the 600k that "got it first" I can't say I'm too much impressed. Definitely something I wouldn't wait in line for more than 1 hour, much less camp out for.
I recently purchased an IPhone 3gs with new At&t service and now I'm hearing so much about the new one coming out in the summer. I understand that 3g and 3gs owners will be able to upgrade to 4.0 whenever it comes out. Would you say it's coming next week when apple has their conference, or would we have to wait a little while? Also, I don't even know how upgrades work for at&t, so how would I upgrade to the new IPhone if I just got the 3gs?
View 15 Replies View RelatedShould I even bother trying to upgrade with my current setup? It would be nice if I could keep everything, settings, game progress, etc. Is it even possible to do this and not have issues, or should I just suck it up and set up as new on 4.0.1 and re-JB and reload everything?

I have 2 iphones, one of which (the 4) has a carrier account. It has been upgraded to iOS5, no problem. I also have my older 3G, with no carrier access, which I use for alarms, music, games, etc. Up until now, I have been able to back it up, sync music, etc., with my main iTunes account. Now, however, when I connect to iTunes, it says its OS is 4.(x).(x) and is "up to date, will check again for updates on March 25."
Why can't I seem to upgrade this second phone? (BTW, iTunes shows me its screen contents, but everything is grayed out.)
