When I turned on my iMessage setting, it automatically used my apple ID/email address instead of my name when I text someone and I don't know how to change it to just my name.

i have noticed that after switching to ios 5.1 my phone has been acting funny. for example: when i am messaging other iphone users with iMessage, it keeps switching from iMessage to regular text every 2 or 3 messages. at first i thought it was the other person since i am normally within my works wifi network and at my home wifi network, but it seems that this problem only occurs to other people when imessaging with me and not with anyone else. and this problem occurs to me while imessaging everyone, so i have come to the conclusion that the problem must be my phone. i have noticed this problem to occur since updating to ios 5.1. has anyone else experienced this problem? what can i do? i am 2 steps shy of reinstalling my phone.

When I use iMessage to another iPhone user, I was told it was my Apple ID that was displayed, instead of my phone number. We are on each other's contact lists but do not exchange email address. Is there anyway to prevent my Apple ID disclosed.

I updated my iphone 4s to ios 5.1 last night and then today when I texted someone else with an iPhone using iMessage, my contact came up as my Apple ID email on their phone instead of my name that was associated with my phone number. This obviously caused a lot of confusion because my email isn't my name and the person I texted didn't know who the message was from. The message looks completely normal on my phone and their contact came up fine but mine didn't work on theirs. I also determined it was my phone that was the problem because I texted another person with an iPhone and the same exact thing happened again. I checked to see if anyone else had this problem and I couldn't find any postings on the Apple forum. So if you are having the same problem and/or know how to fix it,

It simply stays stuck on "Waiting for activation" and eventually goes to "Activation unsuccessful. Turn on imessage to try again". All with no avail. get your engineers on this ASAP apple. More and more people are facing this issue. Devices that are already receiving and sending imessages are unaffected. However when you toggle imessage off and then back on, it does not reactivate. This must clearly be a ongoing issue with your icloud server from yesterdays outages.

I have the iPhone 4 with 3G. I don't use my phone all that much...use iMessage approx. 3x/week, and I listen to iHeart Radio at home on wifi. This is my issue: I got a notice that I was over my data usage and will be billed $15. My questions are...is iMessage free when you text between iPhones on AT&T? Does IHeart Radio use data? I am exchanging some messages with friends and family that live in Europe. The problem is, occassionaly, the iPhone will give up as sending as an iMessage and then send as a text. As a result, I am being charged for sending an international message, when I would rather just write an email or skype (if iMessage wasnt going to do its job).
