IPhone :: Pre-Ordering In-Store / Home Activation / Waived Fee?
Jun 14, 2010
I had read a few posts on this site saying that you can pre-order the phone, and then when you get it at the store, you can tell them that you'll activate it at home. Would that result in a waived Activation Fee?
So, my family decided to all upgrade to the new iPhone. The three of us would all be getting the 16GB, so about $600 for the phones, and then an activation fee (another $100 added to that). Seems like a lot, especially since I noticed that the Online Store would allow us to go without the Activation Fee about two weeks ago...
Also, how would we go about doing this? With the new restriction of only one iPhone per customer, and only one per household, how are we to do this? If all three of us went together, would we be able to get all three iPhones? Would going to an Apple Store help? And if so, is there a way to waive the Activation Fee there? If this can be done without physically going to the store, please let me know. (Older folks don't want to get up and wait just for a phone, but they don't get us Apple folk .)
So my original plan was to buy two iPhone 4's under my wife's name since her employer allows her to get a corporate discount of 20% along with no activation fees. The problem was her credit check as she pretty much has no credit. Instead of paying $750 for each line we setup a new account under my name as I have great credit and wouldn't be charged for a deposit.
Since I don't have access to a Premier discount we were charged activation fees. This isn't a big deal but if I can get them waived then that would be great. Is this very difficult to get an AT&T CSR to do? nAlso, would it be possible to go in to AT&T's website (or call in, w/e) later and change my wife to the primary account holder and apply her corporate discount?
I was planning on going to the Apple store to get an iPhone 4, but my wife just pointed out that when I did that to get my 3G we had a huge headache as Apple couldn't activate my phone since we have a discount on our plan... I had to go across the mall to AT&T to have them take the discount off, go back to Apple to get the iPhone (AT&T didn't have any in stock) then after all that headache we went back to AT&T and they couldn't put the discount back on for 48 hours.so I had to make a special trip to the AT&T store an hour drive.
Anyone experience anything like this last year with the 3GS? Anyone know if the issue is fixed? Or do I just need to get my phone direct from AT&T? On a side note, does anyone know if it's possible to start a new plan or add a line to an existing plan with my 3G so that line wouldn't have a new 2 year agreement?
Since a lot of these accessories (namely the dock and several of the bumpers) don't ship until July 2nd or later.Do you think Apple stores will have these items in stock before then?
If preorders are this bad, what should i expect from in store activation? I have work at 4 the day it comes out, do you think it would take less then 3 hours?
i'm sure plenty of you will say, "Use the search function!" or something but im kinda in a When you go to an Apple store and they activate your phone, is that the same as going to the actual AT&T store and activating it and renewing your 2-year agreement? Or would i have to get the phone from the Apple store, then go to the AT&T store and then set up my new 2-year agreement? I plan on getting the new phone the day it comes out and i just don't want anything getting in the way of that. My current phone has dead pixels going halfway across the screen so i cant wait to finally pick up a new one!
Just today I purchased an iPhone 4s (32g) and was wanting to add apps. I made an account on the iTunes store, completed all that was, and at the end, it asked me to go into my email I provided them, and wait for the activation email they would send me. I've waited awhile now (Hours) and still no email. I even had them re-send the email various times, and still nothing. I'm sure I correctly filled everything out and I checked my spam folder and all that jazz.
I know that purchasing an iPhone at the subsidized prices will result in the extension of one's contract but how exactly would they see to it that this is done w/o forcing you to activate in-store?I ask because I'm leaving for Argentina soon and want to get the iPhone 4 at the $200 price point before I leave (phones in Argentina cost millions of dollars ). I plan on jailbreaking and unlocking it whenever the relevant software comes out (along with doing the whole cutting the SIM thing) but in the meanwhile, would I be able to continue using my current iPhone (first gen) on the line that I am upgrading? To lay it out, there are two lines on the account. Both due for an upgrade. Mom will upgrade her line to new iPhone and will activate and use as normal. I upgrade my line to new iPhone but don't activate and instead use current iPhone on that line until I leave and then give it to a sibling to take over the number (I don't think I have a choice but to give up my number). 1st gen phone doesn't have 3g so I have $20 unlimited plan. Agent already told me that an upgrade to the new iPhone will cause me to move over to one of the new data plans but I'm still unclear as to when I would have to choose the plan. At home via iTunes or what? Do they end up charging you the full amount of the phone if they find that you haven't upgraded your plan to one of the new ones (and indication that you aren't using the new iPhone yet)?I was already told that in the event that I lose my iPhone 4 or it gets broken, or whatever, I can simply use another phone with an ATT SIM (or swap the micro-SIM and use an adapter), give the IMEI number and they'll register the phone and change the plan accordingly.
Could i continue to use the old iPhone w/ that line? I'm assuming that I could while waiting for the phone to arrive so why not after it gets here? I basically don't plan on touching the new iPhone until I get to Argentina but will still obviously be fine with extending the contract for another 2 years (is that all they care about?) since the number will be used by someone.
So days before I preordered, I checked and even text that number to determine if I am eligible for early upgrade and I was and was told that the $18 upgrade fee will be waived. So I preordered yesterday thru AT&T and during the check out process, the charge looks about right and didn't really checked the calculations because nothing on the invoice shows about the upgrade fee but now that I'm calculating it, they charge me the $18 upgrade fee! $299 for the 32GB Black iPhone 4 and they charged me $317, I thought it was the tax but I noticed that the tax charge is TBD, so $317 - $299 = $18. Are they going to waive the upgrade fee later?
Let's see how many, by count, will be pre-ordering tomorrow. Here's how it works. I am pre-ordering 2 iphones. The next poster tells how many they are ordering, and adds this total to the previous total.
A few questions about Pre-Ordering at best buy. I hear they charge $50 to preorder as a deposit I guess, will that fee apply towards the purchase of the phone? And anyone remembering last year pre-ordering the iPhone at Best Buy, how long was the line to pre-order?
I'm travelling to the US (actually on the 24th, pure coincidence) and I was wondering if I can pre-order an unsubsidized iPhone 4 (I have an address in the US and I have a friend with SS number and credit card) or if the pre-orders are only for people that will take a contract with the phone. And I suppose there will be a unit limit per credit card?
I always put my iTunes Store icon on second home page, but whenever I switch country in App Store with different Apple IDs, it appears on my first home page. It's annoying that i have to move it to my second home page again.
I'm going to pre-order the iPhone 4, but my mother is going to use her credit card to do it, just so it is insured. I want to know if I can then go in and pick it up from my local Apple Store on the 24th, if the pre-order is in her name? I live in the U.K.
So how does it work when your upgrading every line on your account through Apple.com? All my lines are eligible for a $199 upgrade on the iPhone 4. Do you do one at a time or after you add your social/phone # does it let you add more before checkout?
I am going to be pre-ordering on the 15th FOR SURE and this will be my first time ever doing this. Please provide all pros and cons for getting it from AT&T Online vs. Apple Online ..... and also the pros and cons for Home Delivery vs. Store Pick Up.
How can I create an icon on the Home Page of my iPhone 4S to directly access my stored iTunes, so I can go right to them instead of to Itunes, then Playlist, then...etc
If I pre-order my iPhone 4 on the 15th and have it shipped to work/home will I get it on the 24th or will it ship to me on that date? Apparently I can't pick it up from the apple store since I'm on my parents family plan?
I read in other threads where people had asked about pre-ordering the iPhone 4 and specifically when their credit card would be charged. The common response I recall was that the card would be charged when the phone shipped. However, be aware that when I ordered this morning at Apple URL, my card was immediately charged. Not a big deal, but may be for others who expected different.
i have never pre-ordered a phone before, how dose this work? when june 17th pre-ordering starts do i sign up for the AT&T service at the same time? or do i wait till i get the phone delivered? i want to port my phone number from Verizon and am not sure how this pre-ordering will work regarding getting service.

I have decided after reading all the threads that I will pre-order from Apple next Tuesday and now need to decide whether to have home delivery or in store delivery. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each? Ive heard that to home there may be activation issues and its better to be in store for troubleshooting but in store on launch day may be packed and I may have to wait I've heard that they have 2 different lines for walk ins and pre-orders is this true? If I send to store can I pick up anytime that day? How does apple ship their orders UPS.FedEx.Etc.Just want to get all the facts for both options if possible. This is my first time pre-ordering and just want to be prepared and make the right decision.
While in random wifi zones, no problems. However, while i'm at home using my own network, all of a sudden i can't access the play store. says 'No Connection, Retry'.... Problem started months ago, i google it and see people with similar issue but none of their fixes worked for me.
Seeing I missed out on pre-ordering the new keyboard on the UK Blackberry shop yesterday (downside of working with no internet access) , will it be available elsewhere on Friday
