Sep 6, 2012I'm thinking about buying a BB Curve 8520 and was wondering if 1) You can just use it w/o having a data plan, 2) If so, can I use the Wi-Fi to join my house network w/o having a data plan, and 3) Would I be able to download apps then, specifically Pandora?

Jan 4, 2010I have the 8520, and have no data plan with my carrier in my post payment plan, i thought , since i have wi-fi at home, office and tons of hot spots. I can use my BB to access the web using free wi-fi as i have been doing with my last 4 smartphones.Big mistake. i have been charged 55 us last month, for data transfer use , i ran to my planŽs assistance office ( telcel in Mexico ), and the answer i got was. you have to get a data plan from us to be able to use wi-fi ( obviuosly i stared at her , just nodding my head ).There is no point in having a device that has acces to wi fi networks , if i cant access the wi fi network without you data plan, so i got the lady to bring the tech guy. His response was...naaahhh...it will access the wi fi. but weŽll charge u anyway. you need to disable the network from the phone and only leave the wi fi option on so you can access without any other charge, but this will leave you with no phone connection.
Is this real? did i just spend 399us in a gadget that has wi fi capabilities but will not be able to get on any wi fi connection form home or work, without being charged for data transmission over my cell providers network?cmon this sounds as stupid as it does in my head ? i would be really disapointed if i just left my old Nokia E71 SPhone, for this beautiful BB Curve 8520 THAT DOES NOT CONNECT TO THE WI Fi.
BB Curve :: WiFi Network Can Not Connect On 8520?
Jan 30, 2012I have a home WiFi network and can connect my BB 8520 curve to it successfully and it is able to browse and use apps etc. How-ever everyday or two even though it remains connected to WiFi it suddenly is not able to browse. I need to restart the BB or Router or both and then it reconnects and can browse again. What could be causing this ?I am unable to add or be added to other BB's in terms of using the IM. Contacts that I am trying to add remain in pending (waiting for authorization). I do not have a data plan with my 3G network provider as I only want to use data related functions when connected to my home Wi-Fi. What could be causing the problem?

Mar 31, 2010I got a new Curve 8520 just resently and have a problem with my internet connection. I use my Curve without data plan/bis. To go in the internet I use Opera 5.0 and for Emails logicmail. To connect to the internet, I changed my APN according to my provider setting:
apn: internet (thats for o2 Germany)
No authentification
Username/PW: blank
On the first day, everything worked just fine, Opera aswell as Logicmail. I also had a EDGE symbol in the upper right corner. On the second date I found, that Opera and logicmail would not connect via Wifi. So I started to play around with settings. Anyway, since then Opera and Logicmail refused to connect via EDGE, however Wifi worked.... I could not figure out the ressons, so I tried to undo my setting changes. And yesterday I was finally able to connect via EDGE again. And here is the funny thing: This morning, I got the same errors agian, when trying to connect via EDGE. I did not do anything with the phone last night, it just refuses to connect. It still shows me the edge sign, but opera always tells me, that it is unable to connect. I set the application application permisson for both programs to "prompt" under the point "internet" to see if the phone even tries to connect, but it does not. Wifi still works fine. It seems that my Blackberry forgot about EDGE and always wants to connect via wifi.Can anyone help me out here?

Jun 24, 2010I currently have a Curve 8320 with Tmobile, BB unlimited e-mail, and no data plan. This works really well, since all I use it for is email and calendar. I occasionally use the internet at home using WiFi. And email service is only $10/month. I'm thinking of getting an 8520, but want to make sure my BB email still works fine with no data plan. I know Tmobile won't sell you one unless you get data service. Anyone own an 8520 without a data plan?

Sep 1, 2011I have had my blackberry for over a year and have had no problem until about a month ago. I redid my 6months blackberry internet booster like usual, but when it had been activated, none of my apps will work and none of my emails come in. My browser still works like usual though. I have phoned t-mobile up but they keep saying everything is correct and to just keep restarting my phone. i have been restarting it by doing the battery reboot about 3 times a day for the last month. I still cant use my apps. I phoned them again and they said blackberry was down aand it would come back in the next few days. No-one else i no has this problem. What can i do?

The Koodo people tell me that RIM did some kind of 'service book push' that has now blocked all wifi capabilities so now I have to purchase a data plan to get wifi. Is this accurate or is Koodo just trying to get me to sign up for a data plan just so I can access my wifi at home?

Jun 20, 2010I bought an iPhone 3GS off a guy on craigslist and it works great, no complaints. But every few minutes or so I get the alert saying that I "Cannot activate cellular data network - You are not subscribed to a cellular data service", and it's really annoying because it lights up my iPhone all the time and kills my battery. It's also really annoying - it comes up whenever I'm typing a message or playing a game; literally when I do ANYTHING on my phone. I do not have a data plan, but I have used 'unlockit.co.nz' to install a Fake APN to my iPhone to block data. Rogers has also given me a data block. This has been going on ever since I bought the phone, I thought installing a Fake APN would stop it but I guess not. I can't really restore since I have a lot of stuff on this iPhone already.. but if that's the only option then I will be forced to. I used to have an unlocked Fido 3G (about 2 months ago) without data and it never gave me this alert, do you think it has something to do with my 3GS being locked to Rogers?
This phone is a jailbroken iPhone 3GS (model MC143C) running version 3.1.3 (7E18) and locked to the "Rogers 5.0" network. If it helps the modem firmware is 05.12.01.if there are no real solutions, I still have 2 months left on my warranty. Would Apple fix it or give me a new one if I un-jailbreak it?

Since Thursday night I've been receiving a SOS signal from my pay as you go Blackberry 8520 when I'm in my apartment or on my block. Or worse, it will say I have full coverage but I can't send or receive phonecalls or messages. If I walk two blocks in any direction the signal comes back. I've been to the Vodafone store multiple times and with the language barrier they keep telling me nothing is wrong. I finally got them to give me a new sim card today hoping that would fix it but i still can't get any signal. I'm sure it's probably something to do with the network but really, for three/four days?? I've lived in the same apartment for the past 4 months with absolutely no problem. I only have a week left in Italy with this phone but it's frustrating because I have to stay home and study for finals and now I can't get into contact with anyone. I've tried the battery pull, wiping my device, changing my SIM card...literally everything I can think of.

With the previous router (585?) all they had to do was scan for available networks and then when ours appeared they put in the password.But with this one when you scan and find the network and try to connect you get the message "this wireless router supports wi-fi protected setup. To connect using a PIN (which your Blackberry will generate), click Next". On the other hand, it connects to any other network: ive successfully connected to many friends wireless and many restaurants' wireless without any problem.
