At this time there is no need for using the full features of BB with data package. I like to continue using the phone with regular wifi connectivity. Is there a possibility for using my "old" BB bold 9700 as regular phone without an expensive data plan such as BES or BIS?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI had a 2 hour conversation with Bell Canada today about using WiFi without Data being turned on, they say you cannot use WiFi without Data being on. The reason I want this is I want to get my gmail emails, but not through Data unless I turn it on myself.
Is there a way to use WiFi all the time without Data being turned on? Then, if I am away from WiFi AND want my emails, I can turn data on myself.
Though I subscribed to my carrier for GPRS services, but the plan has a limit on the data. I have to pay additional if the data exceeds the limit. Therefore when I'm at hotspots or at home, naturally I would want to switch to WIFI to save on costs. Actually,you are right on switching off the data services, it would turn off WIFI as well. So I did a little test. I turned off the entire mobile coverage and left only WIFI on ( which means I'm only connected to my WIFI). I was still able to surf the internet and download both my office and personal emails.
So my only question now is (sort of getting a confirmation), there is no way to turn off the GPRS and leave both the mobile (voice) and WIFI on at the same time?
I just buy a Blackberry bold 9700 and i try to connect to wifi at home ! Works great with facebook, browser etc. But now, i go to my work place and insert the wifi password. It's says to me that it is connected but it still use the wap to connect the internet. (I don't have data plan). So I am charged for connecting with the browser. I go >manage connection>mobile network options> and try to turn off the date services. But when i do, i cannot connect neither with the wifi nor with the wap. Try to understand me, how can the mobile tell me that i am connected to wifi, but use the mobile network to connect the internet which is a charged service.

Is there any way to get my emails? My friend has a iphone and he can choose between manual email receiving with wifi or push with data plan.

View 4 Replies View RelatedRecently the data on my 9700 will not switch from WiFi to cellular. If it's attached to a WiFi network, everything works fine. However when I leave that network and the BB needs to use EDGE/3G it does nothing. It will not even attempt to transmit or receive unless I do a battery pull. If I leave WiFi off, everything works fine. It is now running OS v6.0.0.668 by AT&T. I just updated to this OS in hopes that it would fix the issue, but no luck.

* WiFi: What settings do I have to change so that my blackberry does transmit all data via WiFi and not GPRS or 3G? I do not have a data plan and don't want one

AT&T and iPhone data use charges - WiFi and cellular link options Many people have complained about unusual data usage charges on their AT&T iPhone bills -- often 10s of megabytes in one transaction, posted in the middle of the night. Here are a couple of updates based on the AT&T support portal: WiFi vs cellular link: Connecting to a local WiFi hotspot and turning off your cellular data connection will block cellular data transmission and related charges. (Except for SMS messages, which are very small.) There are some gotchas, however: (a) If your iPhone goes 'to sleep' (the screen goes black), it will revert to the cellular data link, unless it is plugged into a charger. (b) Even if your iPhone is plugged into a charger, it will revert to a cellular data connection if the WiFi link drops, e.g. due to a momentary glitch with your internet provider or electric power supply, so.... (c) The only way to completely ensure that your iPhone will not revert to a cellular data connection is to turn it completely off. You (obviously) will not be able to receive calls, however.
Large data transactions in the middle of the night: Unusually large 'chunks' of data that are apparently sent around midnight are a related issue. You may think that you could avoid these mystery charges by making sure you have a WiFi connection running at night. A number of 'czars' on AT&T's site stated, however, that this is are simply an artifact of AT&T's billing system, which "aggregates" transactions that occur throughout the day into one summary charge, which is posted in the middle of the night. If this is accurate, the data connection(s) you use throughout the day will determine how large this 'summary' transaction will be.
Note: Our bill does not appear to square with AT&T's explanation. For example:

Now when I attempt to remove the Five Column Package, I get an error everytime it tries uninstall. Sub-process/usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) When I restart the springboard it goes into Safe Mode. Do I have to SSH into my IPhone and remove the package? Also, my IPhone won't get out of Safe Mode.
