Ok look, it is not a hardware issue, why? Because five minutes before updating i was surfing youtube, I decided to go from ios 7 to ios 8.1.1, and then suddenly my wifi is like NOPE and is grayed out and useless. I hear its cause newer ios's over heat the older wifi components, but i can not prove or even look into that. All i know is that freezing it works for about an hour, then its kaput and grayed out again. Funny how my ipod 4 still works after years and years but my iphone doesn't. I have done the whole reset network settings song and dance, all that's left is to dig through the files and force it to work.

iPhone 4S, iOS 8.1.1, Using it as an ipod with 1GB of ram
It's been a few weeks since I used the wifi on my iphone 5 and when I tried to turn it on it stays grayed out. I've tried the Network settings reset and it still does not work.Â
I cannot enable my wifi because it is grayed out. I some of the recommended actions that I could do mannually to turn the wifi on but I'm still having trouble connecting to the internet via Wifi. I am thinking that I have to add a VPN but I don't know exactly what that means.
My iPhone 4s 7.1.1 no longer allows me to turn on my WiFi or Bluetooth. The wifi is grayed out and doesn't respond to touch, the bluetooth has the constantly spinning loading icon instead of the activation switch.Â
I tried to download the latest software, but cannot do it without WiFi connection. I have restarted my phone, made sure the wifi was off, and reset the network settings, no luck.Â
I recently update firmware 5.1 on my iphone 4s and now cannot connect to my wifi. I have tried resetting network -reset all settings etc., to no avail.
So basically all of a sudden my wifi wasn't working, it just switched to data/3G. I thought the wifi was down so I just continued using data but after a long time I went to check and saw that the wifi was switched off and greyed out. I tried everything! I turned it on and off, I put airplane/do not disturb on, then turned my phone off waited 5-10 minutes, turned it back on then switched the modes off. It allowed me to turn the wifi button on so I thought it worked but no internet connections came up.
I locked my phone went to the movie theater then I noticed I couldn't even click on the wifi button at settings it just froze, same with trying to open up my texts, I couldn't even turn my phone off. I tried resetting network settings too. I finally restored it just now then backed up and now the wifi is turned off and grey again but everything else is working. I don't want to do the freeze/heating method so what else can I do? Is my only resort going in person to the local apple store?
Instead of the usual Wifi menu in the settings menu, it is replaced by Personal Hotspot which is also greyed out. It is on 5.0.1. It can connect to 3G perfectly fine however.
I've had a grey area over my wi fi button, and this stopped me from using wi fi, I couldn't turn it on or off it was frozen. so I looked it up on the internet and support and followed. I reset the network setting and it worked.... however its happened again and after resetting the network settings. I reset the full phone and erased everything. so I've done that. now i am stuck with an iPhone 4s that wont allow me to search for a wi fi connection to activate the phone. its suggesting i activate through cellular ( no internet on sim so cannot ) or I have to type in the name of the wi fi and security and password. tried to enter it and it freezes but still shows that its joining when it clearly isn't. my opinion is the full WiFi on the phone has malfunctioned and I cannot activate the device because of this.
I just got brand new white bold 9700 yesterday from Rogers Wireless and tried to setup WiFi at home. I have BIS data plan and my laptop can use wireless connection without any problems. The phone did found my modem and I put WEP password correctly but it shows white dash and the WiFi icon on screen shows gray. I've been talking with Rogers technical support guys 3 times:
First time they asked me to turn off the phone, take out battery and put it back, delete profile and reset, it failed Second time: turn off my modem and reboot it, it didn't work neither Third time: they asked me to download desktop manager and handheld code file to reinstall OS. But I found that the link they gave me is desktop manager 4.6 which is older than mine (the CD comes with the phone is desktop 5.0.1). I have my laptop (Windows vista x64) installed desktop manager 5.0.1 via CD, and I downloaded the 4.6 version and installed it on my desktop pc (windows XP ). But I hesitate to connect my cell to either of them to continue. I don't want to mess up my cell OS. To me it doesn't make sense for me to reinstall OS and even down version from 5.0 to 4.6.
Right now I use my BIS data plan to do everything(check email, BBM so far). I've searched other posts and tried other things like run diagnoses tests, turn mobile network off and WiFi off, back on, delete WiFi profile, rescan put it back, take out battery. None of those worked. Still the icon of WiFi on screen is gray.
I'm travelling and networks working on other phone will not connect with mine. It views them and allows me to put in the password, but the actual connect button is grayed out.
After finally getting access to the wifi button in safe mode, I knew the issue was caused by an app. The only one I had recently installed was TMobile. Sure enough, uninstalling it solved all 3 of these issues.
I've seen it many times being brightly black and white, and under Manage Connections it shows a Green checked symbol. But most of the time the WiFi icon is grayed out and under Manage Connections it has a white little line instead of the green checked symbol.
