My iPhone 4s was dropping calls left and right so I went to the Apple store and they gave me new hardware.I have a backup on iCloud but when I go to restore it...it takes an hour and then just gives me an error "can not restore from backup".I upgraded the new phone to 5.0.1 before syncing (my old one had 5.0.1)

I've just requested an unlock from my carrier (Vodafone UK) and for my number to be ported out. After both had happened I tried to follow Apple's support instructions, which told me to: backup the phone using iTunes; erase all content and settings; and restore from backup.
The restore fails subtly. It looks like the phone has unlocked -- with my new SIM it picks up the new carrier (T-Mobile UK). However, it seems to be stuck in a cycle that last about 7 seconds. The main slide-to-unlock screen appears, but is unresponsive. A few seconds later it flips to a black screen with the time-is-passing clock dial icon. This happens repeatedly. I'm using: iTunes 10.6.3.25 which has upgraded the iPhone to iOS 5.1.1
I can use iTunes to convert it to effectively a new phone that works fine, without any backed up content, using a factory restore.
- Is this a known problem with a known solution? I can't find anything matching the symptoms on the web.
- Is it worth booking in a visit to the Genius Bar?
Failing that, I have a backup with the content I want, I can open the files and see e.g. all the message history. Is there a reliable way of partially restoring the phone's content (say all contacts and message history) rather than a blunt iTunes restore-from-backup?

I am having iPhone4, I upgraded it from firmware 4.1 to 5.1. iTunes Successfully upgraded the firmware but fails to restore my data. I have just upgraded the firmware and have lost everything that was on my phone. I have tried to restore from back up but keeps coming up with "itunes could not restore the iphone "#######" because the back up session failed.
The back up was done just couple minutes before i upgraded and i have also tried previous back ups but none of them work.
Is there going to be a way to get the back up working?

I have lost ~20 pictures I took during my family's 4th of July event this weekend. It was the first time they have met my 17 month old daughter. Normally I wouldn't sweat loosing pictures, but these are very important to me.It restored every picture up until the backup I did before I left Sunday morning. I have tried A few different backups, one I made before I erased and synced my phone(new computer, old one was my work computer, no access to it).

I finally updated my iPhone to 5.1. I waited so long because of the fiasco updating my iPod Touch when 5.0 first came out. I thought it worked, I was pleased Apple worked out the bugs. Lo and behold, all of my apps and folders disappeared before my eyes. No problem I thought, I did a back up. Restore from back up. Fifteen minutes later, it looks exactly the same. Isn't a backup supposed to be of everything on the system so that if something goes wrong, you just revert back to the back up and either try again or wait for the process to be fixed? Seriously, get your stuff together.

I just updated to iOS 5.1.1 on my 3GS phone, previously using 5.0, while plugged into the computer and iTunes 10.6.3. I had the phone set to backup to iCloud, and ran a sync operation before updating.Does that not also create a backup?When the restore process began, it asked if I wanted to set up as a new phone or restore from backup. However the list of available backups did not have anything from today.The last one listed was from October 2011.So I cancelled that operation, went through the new phone setup and then it asked if I wanted to restore from iCloud. So I chose the most recent iCloud backup which was from around 6 AM this morning. Now it is in the process of downloading all my apps, pics, and perhaps music as well. I don't know but it's going to take HOURS to finish this.
Anyway I opened some apps that have already downloaded, and some app data appears to be intact. But other apps have nothing after October 2011. And I'm talking apps that have tracked my fitness and workout progress over the past 6 months, bike rides in the past few months, car fuel fillup and maintenance history since October, I'm talking LOTS of data that appears to be gone.What did I do wrong here? Did I not do what I should have done regarding backups? What is the point of backing up to iCloud if it's not going to back up all my app data?

I have been using my iPhone 4 as an iPod for a while because I'm waiting for AT&T to unlock it. View 2 Replies View RelatedI had faced this issue when i last updated my phone when the 2.1 had come out.. I installed the latest Backup and Restore application as recomended by the SE update site.. Then backed up my files onto an already existing backup (which i think has corrupted the backup), hence overwriting the file.. After that i upgraded to 2.1 and restored my files, which failed because the contacts were not successfully imported (even though the Backup and Restore app said that the import was succesful.)

everything was working fine until I updated the Ovi Suite to v 2.1.1.245 then phone wouldnt sync anymore. I restore the computer back to the date before the Ovi suite was updated taking it back to v 2.1.1.1. now the phone still wil not sync. any ideas ? (Im syncing with the usb cable). I often get a messege telling me to set my phone to "set my phones usb mode to ovi suite or PC Suite" which I do of course but no success just fails to sync evrytime now. wish I had nevver tryed to update the ovi software now.
I'm considering trying a JB on my phone, but I do not want to deal with plugging it in just to restart. To some people it's not a big deal, but my personal preference is to not have to deal with it. I just want to make sure I have the process correct:
1. Perform a backup of my iPhone in iTunes.
2. D/L, install, run Blackra1n
3. Phone will be JB'd, possibly untethered, which would be awesome.
4. If it ends up being a tethered JB, and I wish to undo everything, I can just restore from that backup in iTunes.

When I went to do this, an error came up saying there was a firmware incompatibility issue. Is there anyway of getting the data onto the new phone?
