I realize the answers to most of what I'm about to ask are probably available in different places, but the jailbreaking/unlocking process has just gotten so hairy lately that I hope some people here can get me going in the right direction with this stuff.
I bought an iPhone 3GS when they were first released and jailbroke it shortly after; I've been very pleased with it ever since but haven't had the time to update anything in the last few months (I still have the original 3.0 firmware).
I'll be visiting Europe for a few months soon, though, so I'd like to take the opportunity to update my firmware/jailbreak versions, as well as unlock my phone so I can use European SIM cards instead of paying through the nose to AT&T.
I was wondering what the best way was to go about all this? What programs and methods should I use, and in what order? I'm a bit concerned about doing something wrong and making it impossible to jailbreak/unlock in the future. As I mentioned earlier, I got my 3GS when they were first released so I understand an untethered jailbreak should be possible. I'm also a Windows user.
A few other questions in particular:
1. What's the best way to backup everything, including all my personal stuff (texts, notes, emails, bookmarks), app store and cydia apps and associated data, winterboard/theme settings, and everything else? 2. I've read that setting up the iPhone as a new phone instead of restoring from a backup yields better battery life for some users; has this been proven to be the case? Is it worth the hassle of having to restore things manually if I set up as a new phone? 3. Is there any decreased battery life after unlocking my phone, apart from what I'm already experiencing with a jailbroken phone? 4. Does unlocking my phone change my user experience in any way when I'm at home and using AT&T's network?
So i upgraded from 1.14 to 2.01 last night but it seems like I am not 'jailbroken'. I don't see an icon for Cydia or any other of the packages i chose. When the IPwnage was finished and iTunes asked me to restore from backup or treat as a new phone, what should I have picked? I chose restore, so maybe that was the problem?
I have the most current iPhone OS and I want to jailbreak it to be able to tether to my iPad for 3G service since my iPad is only wifi. I have looked on internet amd most sites claim current iPhone OS cannot be jailbroken. Is this true and if not, how do I jailbreak mine.
I know you guys are sick of hearing questions like this, but I can't find a straight answer. I'm currently jailbroken on windows using quickpwn 2.0.1 firmware file and 2.0.2 firmware on the phone. Everything is fine. All I want to know is if I need to do a restore as new phone before I can jailbreak to 2.1? Or if I will be able to just jailbreak leaving my phone exactly as it is now?
I have a jailbroken 2g iphone and i can't get bsd subfolders its is not there when i try to find it in install and i can't connect to Win Scp. i always get and connection timed out error. and some people say 1.1.4 so is it possible to for me to do this.
According to iclarified 3.0 is now available for 3gS phones. They state that this version will not work with 3g or 2g. Is this the version that contains the extras? Like voice command, video capture, etc? If so could it be hacked or jailbroken to be able to install it on existing 3g's? Just wondering?
A co worker of mine racked up 2 gigs of data 2 months ago and burned through a blistering 8.6 gigs of data this past month. All of this on his 3Gs and none of it done by tethering with a jailbroken iPhone. He "claims" that he has no clue how it happened but I'm guessing he knows. How many video clips of wholesome family entertainment would he have to download to hit that impossible number. I nearly myself when I saw the bill.
My idiot ex (a supervisor on the apple care line!) jaibroke my phone and I hate it. It won't even turn on, now, it's stuck in recovery mode. How do I fix this? I'm trying to make it work through iTunes but I get error 1601. He used something called Red Snow, if that helps. I'm absolutely sick right now. I never once wanted this thing jailbroken, nevermind absolutely broken. Especially by an Apple employee.
A friend of mine jailbroke my phone, and I absolutely hate it. I've tried multipe time to reset all and restore it from the phone. Every time I do so, my phone stays on this black screen with a spinning wheel. It never goes away. I can't restore my phone from iTunes, because I use an Internet card and the download to update my phone before restoring, is too big. What can I do?!?!!
I just jailbroke my iPhone for the first time using QuickPwn to get jailbreak 2.1. Everything worked great, I was grabbing some stuff off of Cydia, all was well and I loved it. Then I restarted my iPhone after installing a bunch of apps, and I got stuck on the never-ending apple logo. After I tried restoring a backup I made with iTunes off my jailbroken iPhone, I would never be able to start the iPhone up again. For whatever reason, data could be copied to the iPhone while still on the never-ending apple loading screen, but I would never go back to the home screen. After two more attempted restores of the backup of the jailbroken iPhone, I gave up and went back to the official 2.1 firmware.
Now I am about to jailbreak again, but how do I make a backup of my jailbroken iPhone that I can actually restore from successfully? Is there any way to?
I am going to a conference next week and wanted to know if there is a way to get an iPhone/iTouch application to display on a TV screen using the AV cables. My iPhone is already jailbroken so if there is a jailbroken application that will do this, that will work too.
I seriously cannot figure this out. I have searched for any info on this..cannot find. I try and delete any jailbroken app like it was a normal one but no "x" shows up for you to delete it with. How do you do it?
So I would like to update to 2.2.1 and I saw quickpwn is now compatible. The question I have is will I lose the jailbroken apps, etc that I have now? I just consolidated 5 pages of apps into categories and don't really relish the thought of doing it all over, plus the UI tweaks I've done. This will be my first update so I wasn't sure how that works. Thanks for all of your help, these forums are the best!
OK, I'm a cheap bastard (I should say I have a 1y/o that's eating/******** me out of money and is going into daycare next month $$$) but I'd love an iPhone. (my Dad has one, loves it, and has offered to pay the first $200 towards the hardware) I'm wondering if I were to buy an iPhone outright, and use an AT&T sim card in it, but w/o any data plan, what would work when out of range of a WiFi network? I don't see myself using a lot of data when away from WiFi EXCEPT for the GPS/Maps, but how much of that needs data? Is that DLing the maps using data on the fly, or are some of the maps built into the system? If I didn't have a data plan are there any other map/gps options that would work w/o data? My situation is I really don't want to (or can afford to) spend the $30/month on data. I don't see myself using it tons (it would be nice, but not $30 nice) beyond the gps, so if I could have that while in the car, then WiFi elsewhere I'd be fine.I'm looking for the best combo of in car GPS, MP3 player (we already have 3 ipods in the house), palm type device and phone. The iPhone seems to be one tempting option if I can get around the $30 data plan and only use those features on a WiFi connection. But will I also lose the ability to use it as a GPS? I was grossly misinformed. I thought all apps were free after you jailbroke. now I find out you cant even use the paypal app id rather have the paypal app than any PDAnet or cycorder, and those are the two main reasons I jailbroke.
If lets say, im about to meet with someone in few hours. and i go to settings, reset, then delete all content and settings.would this delete all info (such as, contacts, email, sms, calendars) but still keep cydia in there? and maybe all the apps that are jailbroken?
My itunes and and appstore will not load since I jailbroke my 3gs. Is this normal or is there something I have to do? Please excuse me if this is obvious but I'm a noob and tried searching. I used redsnow and have installed some packages through cydia (sbsetiings, backgrounder, winterboard, intelliscreen, and thats about it.
i'm looking into buying snow leopard this weekend, but i don't want to get it if it installs a new version of itunes that gives my iphone any problems. can anyone confirm if there's an updated version of itunes in snow leopard? i am currently running itunes 8.2.1 in leopard. tia.
Jailbroken iPhone 3GS here. anybody know of an HTC clock for the lockscreen? I've seen a few that basically theme up the phone or have the clock on the springboard. I just want the HTC clock on the lockscreen only. Has anyone seen this through cydia before? I've searched and couldn't really find anything.
I jailbroke my 3.1.2 3GS via BlackRa1n last night. I saw this AM there is a new iTunes ver 9.0.3. Do the JB iPhone and the new iTunes play nice together? Just wanted to make sure before I upgraded iTunes.
This may be a problem covered in a few places already, but I feel like I'm going crazy trying to find up to date answers to my questions, since it feels like the software is constantly changing. So I jailbroke a 3G 3.0 iphone that belonged to a friend. I had some battery problems so decided to update it to 3.1.2. So I downloaded the ipsw for this and the pwnage tool. I went through the steps and went into DFU mode, was prompted to go to itunes and restore with my costume ipsw. I did this, but can't use the 'shift-restore' trick to select the update. Now I'm stuck in recovery/DFU mode (not sure which) and can't even restore to 3.1.3 because I unlocked the phone and don't have the original sim. All I want is to get my phone back up and running on a 3.1.x OS.
So I lost my iphone sunday and am getting one from a friend tonight. My 3G was extremely customized with lockinfo and categories and categoriesSB, etc.If I jailbreak this new 3G, and restore from that backup, what exactly will happen if I have nothing installed?I know its best to start completely fresh after a JB, but I have some savedata I dont want to lose for the 2nd time.Would all my apps go back on the phone but in completely random places?Would my backup install mobilesubstrate addons without me doing it manually in Cydia?
So my iphone seems to be stuck in a reboot loop it'll display the apply logo, then the apple and a loading circle and then it shuts off briefly and starts the entire loop again. It keeps doing it until the battery dies or until I shut it off. I've put the phone into DFU mode and restored three times and I still have the same issue?
Yesterday I locked it during a meeting, and it froze shortly after I unlocked it a few hours later. None of the buttons would respond, so I decided to try the hard reset of holding the power and start buttons together for 10 seconds. It turned the phone off, but it will not reboot.
Instead, when the phone is plugged in or reset, I get the Apple logo, followed about 2-3 minutes later by the time circle which freezes as soon as it appears. The phone stays this way for 10 minutes or so, until it resets itself with a black screen, followed by a red bar battery symbol, and then the Apple logo followed by the frozen time circle.
I have tried all of the standard reset strategies (pressing both buttons, tethering while the computer reboots, holding the start button while it is plugged in, all with and without the sim installed) and nothing has gotten it beyond the loop.
The phone will go into DFU mode, but I am worried about a system restore as I am under the impression that even if it works, it will mess up my ability to re-Jailbreak it as it will upgrade the firmware to the latest version (which I have been scrupulously avoiding until now). Maybe at this point there is nothing to lose though.
I have an Apple store nearby, but I am reluctant to take it there due to the Jailbreak (although I don't know how they would know given the state that the phone is in). I would also hate to have them replace the phone with a replacement that has the new bootrom that can't be jailbroken (or have they now managed to jailbreak these too?).
So I needed to restore my iphone from a backup because when I tried syncing an app I got an error then everytime I connected my phone to itunes it was asking to either restore from backup or setup as new device and I restored from backup.Just wanted to know if my iphone is still jailbroken after restoring from a backup because I still have Cydia and the other stuff.
I just got a new macbook pro and all my files were on my old computer. I only backed my computer up using time machine, but I don't want to sync my iphone to my new itunes and lose my jailbreak. Is that even possible?
If so, what do I need to do to retain my jailbreak?
I would like to know how I can update my jailbroken iPhone to ios4.... I want to be able to keep all my texts, and my notes too.... Along with everything else on my iPhone. Do I just go into iTunes and press update?
