Xperia PLAY :: How To Root It Even With A Locked Bootloader
Apr 11, 2011Rooting (or Jailbreaking if you're used to the iPhone) is pretty awesome - it enables you to use a whole bunch of apps that are previously offlimits (such as Titanium Backup - a piece of software that will back up all of your .apks. It also enables you to remove some of the built-in bloat that Sony stuffed onto the Xperia Play which frees up a bit more space for new apps (Who honestly needs the Chinese keyboard on their phone?!)The classic way to root a phone is to first unlock the boatloader and then through that, install a version of your ROM that allows root access. However, although SE are providing a way to unlock the bootloader on a Play, this is not ideal because:Unlocking the bootloader automatically invalidates your warrantyWhen you have unlocked your bootloader, the software update function on your phone stops working as SE consider your phone to be "modified"Most phones are SIM-locked to a particular network and are therefore not even candidates to be bootloader unlocked The solution is to root your phone without unlocking the bootloader. How? A new application called Gingerbreak does it all for you! Literally, all you need to do is download the Gingerbreak .apk, run it and enjoy your new rooted Play. I can confirm that it is 100% working and took about 5 minutes from start to finish.

Apr 23, 2012Today when I tried to update my Neo V Firmware to ICS my pc companion froze at the screen where it shows: Please wait, a ring was truning and was un preparing tab. It froze my whole pc so I had to force-turn off my pc. What could be the problem and how to fix it. I think my pc is alergic from flashing cause it froze my pc when i was using flashtool too. Feb 5, 2015I was taking a picture with my phone when the entire phone froze, then a few seconds later the screen went black. This struck me as odd, as I'm pretty sure I had charged it over night last night. It is a possibility that the battery went to 0% though. However, ever since the screen went black, I have not been able to do anything with it. When I plug it into a charger (and I've tried several), the LED light endlessly blinks red. I've tried every way possible to reset the phone (removing SIM card, pressing off button near SIM card, holding down power and either of the volume buttons). Tried connecting the phone to both a PC and Mac, but neither recognizes that a device is connected.

Feb 26, 2010I am the owner of a Sony EricksonE w580i which I am very happy with.However 2 days ago, out of the blue after sending a text I was faced with the message which I had never seen before. " REPLACE SIM OR WATCH DEMO" Despite playing the demo several times and taking out and replacing the sim several times, I was faced with the fact that my phone was locked.On replacing the sim I noticed that it was pushed into position by the battery itself, thats the way it had been set up by the Orange Shop. so it was like on a spring and the battery was pushing it into its working position.And this is the root of the problem. The sim card has to be pushed home until it clicks into position. I have small fingers and I still could not push it to its fully seated and clicked position with my fingers alone.eventually I managed to do it using the edge of a small screwdriver, but even then it took several tries before it clicked home. I believe this is a flawed design as it is not easy to do by any means. And yet using the battery to push the sim to the seated position is the way it was et up for me at point of purchase and this also gave adequate contact for me to get uninterrupted use for several months. But this is NOT correct, the Sim must be clicked and locked into position so it is no longer movable on the spring mechanism.Once it was clicked home - Hey presto ! like magic, everything worked perfectly, only had to reset the date.However, and quite worryingly, when I called the Sony Erickson help line befor I found the magic solution, I was advised that to overcome the locked system and to bypass the dreaded message, I needed to go to the Sony Erickson site, go to support and downloads then click on Update your product software/Update Service.My friendly support advisor said this would overcome the problem but the downside would be that I would lose all my memory ! I would have to start again, Calender, Tasks, Notes, Contacts. everything.This would have been a heavy price to pay, for a non solution ! Clearly the advice was a shot in the dark from the advisor ! I had already downloaded said updates as a matter of course 2 months ago so I was sceptical of solution that SE had suggested.No, this problem is mechanical/circuitry. NOT SOFTWARE !
The sim card is not locked home unless clicked, do not depend on battery pressure. Thus the phone when in "battery pressure mode" may have a circuit or a partial circuit, leaving the user at best to be in my situation to get several months of usage, and then kaputt ! as the circuit is lost and the phone thinks it needs re setting up. and it gives the message you can not get past. or the worst case of continual working /non working scenarios, which are linked to the partial contact and partial circuit.I think this may also be the route cause behind many other of the problems raised on this forum, ie; Phones turning off, or just a red light, or just a slight vibration, or phone behaving like it's dead, or phone locked etc.(from other posts it appears all the above issues are are further "encouraged" by a low battery charge) which seems to be a separate quality issue altogether.So at the end of this ramble - the tip is make absolutely sure the sim card is locked home, be patient, you may have to try many times, but it will click home if you use a tool to assist you, (fingers are not enough) and you may well just solve your problems too.Essentially I think the phone is a very good mid range phone and this design fault may be hugely tainting its performance /likability.If Sony Erickson are listening? they will correct / make easier the sim card clicking action, They will also instruct the help desk to give out the "clicking the SIM card home" advice.Rather than the totally useless - download software advice which will do nothing to create a good circuit, but will ensure lose all your information unless backed up somewhere. And while SE are at it they should also re work the battery life AND the cover panel removal. To get the back panel off is a nightmare and can lead to creating other damage as such excessive forces are required. Not good at all - BAD COVER DESIGN

Jan 25, 2012I phone recently developed a problem with touch screen becomming completely unresponsive. I googled and found its a common fault with Sony Handsets. Now let me explain the list of tasks i did in order to get it back to work but invane 1- Tested a new touchpad 2- Software update 3- Software downgrade 4- Deassembling and reassembling
i think i didn't miss anything but still its not responsive. It does sometimes response but if i do restart battery pull, open back case its unresponsive again. According to my knowledge its not a hardware issue as if its hardware and need new one i already tried that its software issue and it seems that entire screen is selected when i try to neviggate through the gaming keys. I am still unable to belive that sony ericsson has still not provided any fix for the issue. If anyone has any idea or any third party software for screen please advise.

Xperia PLAY :: Supported External Speaker For Play?
May 27, 2011I am looking to buy an external speaker to connect to my xperia play, preferably a sony branded one, but definately one that is portable enough to fit in my pocket.I thought I had found the one that fit the bill perfectly when I checked the sony site and found the MS 430 which is supposed to be fully compatible with the Xperia Play (it even doubles up as a phone stand, which is pretty neat).Now the problem is my jack is on the horizontal side of my phone (opposite side to the left flipper) and not on the top end as shown in the picture to connect a phone to this speaker.So therefore the speaker is not compatible with this phone, unless of course I have a unique phone with the jack in the wrong place or the phone is connected in the upright position, which wouldnt be very good when watching video playback.

May 20, 2012bought my ray online from ebay 3 months back with warranty & updated it to ICS through PCC 7 days back. After the update the phone is showing invalid sim(bsnl).It is working with other bsnl network sim cards.When i approached sony people ,told me that they cannot give warranty as the phone is valid to use in saudi arabia & not in india.Now if i root it & downgrade to GB will i able to use the same sim.I don't want to use new sim with same number as the old one having lot of money.
