I went through all of the settings, turned it off, even reset it, but cannot get my iPhone 4s to ring or for the speaker to work when in the phone.

I have a new iPhone 6 with IOS 8.1.2 and have the same problem that affected my previous iphone 4S with IOS 8.1.1: when audio is turned off using the hardware switch on the left side I am still able to play audio from my video library or other apps like whatsapp or similar. Even if I go into settings >> sound and look at ringtones they are able to play (also with earphone). Furthermore it happens that recording videos in silent mode doesn't record the audio but only video.

Normally when I go to sleep I put my phone in silent mode from the quick toggles in the notification panel. I like silent mode so I don't get vibrate notifications during the night and sounds that would wake me up.
Before the update my alarm which I use in the AM to wake up for work used to work in silent mode and I would hear the alarm. The last 2 nights the alarm goes off but only on the screen and does not make a sound like it used to.

So it seems you can press the volume key and by clicking the 'bell' icon I can scroll through 3 different modes: Loud, Vibrate and Silent.

I thought I could put into vibrate mode and slide the media volume down to zero and it would rememeber it... then putting back into loud mode would make media slider go back to normal volume?... Nope, I have to change it back to loud mode and remember to slide the media volume back to normal...

In my 1st generation iPhone, all I had to do was flip the switch on the side of the iPhone, so that the orange dot would be seen, and it would display the crossed bell graphic and go into silent mode.
When I flip the switch on the iPhone 3GS, nothing happens. It still makes noise when it rings. I tried toggling the setting in "Sounds" which said "Change with Buttons", but the switch still doesn't work. Toggling this setting seems to affect whether the "speaker" graphic is on screen when I press the volume buttons.
It seems that there is no way I can get the ringer switch to do anything. Is there anyway to make this work? Or have I received a defective unit? =S

I've had a 3GS iphone for about a year and a half and just last month it has started to randomly vibrate. Whenever I switch it to silent mode I will set my phone down and the bell symbol will continue to pop up as if I'm switching it on and off of silent mode. Every time the symbol pops up it vibrates. I recently purchased a Zylo handset from the Orange Shop. It worked fine until yesterday but now the ear speaker is totally silent on both incoming and outgoing calls.
