Nokia :: N97 Music Player - Alternative

Is there a better / alternative music player available anywhere for the N97? The default player is poor in my opinion - the player I had on my 2 year old Sony W960 was way ahead of this Nokia product.

Simple things like being able to hide artists associated with compilations seems to be missing.

Nokia :: Alternative Music Player For E52 / S60?
The Nokia Music Player that came with my E52 is not good, are there any (free!) alternatives? How about an iTunes for S60.I have problems with m4a files, and podcasts not being added (or not visible) to Music library (even if the file is there, and I can play it from the folder).

Nokia :: N97 Music Player Application Not Display Any Music
I have a problem since yesterday regarding the music player application on my N97. Namely, it will not display any of my music - it displays "no songs" for whatever section (Artists, Albums, etc.). Of course, I checked the file system and all music is there, safe and sound. It should be noted that the music files are in .mp3 or  .m4a format, placed appropriately (mass storage, folder "Music"). And I hadn't had this sort of problem until yesterday, when I was trying to sync music with my PC using Ovi Player and Ovi Suite. They both recognize my music files and display all albums and songs accordingly. To make it more interesting, when I choose "Music library details" option in the music library main screen, it displays the correct information (1490 songs, modified 26.11. etc.), but it simply won't list any music saying that I have none!
What I tried:
- refreshing the library a number of times - it reports "0 files added" and continues to behave in the same way;
- importing some new music (via PC) and refreshing the library - the same outcome;
- switching phone off and on (including removing the battery);
- resetting the phone to factory settings.
Nothing helped. It's running the newest firmware version (v20).In my opinion, the problem is not caused by the music files, but the music player application itself. So I don't think that formatting the mass storage would do the trick. Someone correct me if I'm mistaking. Also, I would very much like not having to reinstall the firmware as it was excruciating in the first place - lost connection with the device, my phone almost died, etc. But if anyone strongly thinks that it is worth trying, then I will. This is extremely annoying.

Lately each time I drag and drop music or videos to my phone using mass storage, my music player won't show it. There's nothing in recently added and I tried refreshing it, but it showed me 'General:System Error' and stopped refreshing. I checked in my file manager and the songs are still there.

Nokia :: N97 FW 2.0- Music Player Locks
I have installed FW 2.0 and have only 1 problem.  I can not use the music player any more.  After I first updated, the phone would lock up after I tried to open my library.  It would read "searching for songs and podcasts" and I would have to take the battery out to get it to reset.  As per Instructions by Nokia support, I reset the phone using the *#7370#, *#7380#, and the shift-spacebar,back, and power button methods. Still no go. I then reformatted the mass memory by the file manager and reloaded the music by Ovi suites.  Still locks up.

I loved my n97 before the update, but the music is a must!

Nokia :: N97 V2 Music Player Has More Bugs
My problem is back!

This is what I have done in the past hour.

Exported my contacts to vcf onto memory card. Removed the card.

*#7370# - hard reset

Went through all that... Then remembered I hadn't wiped mass storage.

Wiped mass storage (Which it kept complaining it couldn't do until I removed all the default active apps on the front screen). After removing them it eventually formatted it

*#7370# - hard reset

Let it get settled...

Connected to USB, did a firmware update check. 2.00.19, no update available. Disconnected USB.

Removed all the front screen **bleep**, added shortcut 2, put my normal shortcuts onto it.

Added my wifi destination

Opened the browser, went to google.co.uk via my wifi, added that as bookmark

Put the memory card back in (there are no apps on it, I never got round to using it for anything).

Imported my contacts back from the memory card.

Went into music player, zero tracks shown. Good.

Connected USB, started Nokia Music PC application (latest version, had checked). Right clicked on one album 13 tracks.

Let it send them over to the N97.

Disconnected phone. Started N97's music player. It says music library corrupt, scanning... Says 13 tracks found.

Artists shows one artist, 13 tracks. Albums shows 1 album. All looks good.

Go into the album, pick on a track, starts playing.

Volume control does nothing. Touch volume control does nothing. Headset remote control, volume, forward and reverse do nothing. Touch screen pause/play forward and reverse do work, but there is no way to control volume.

I've screwed up this music player app before the Nokia system has even got round to sending me the Welcome text message (which I have seen too many times!).

Okay, I'm going to write the next bit line by line as I do it... So bear with me... It's step by step. You never know, it might help anyone that gives a damn (Nokia hopefully), fix it!

*#7780# - soft reset

Front screen now just shows shortcuts1 and 2, but the shortcuts themselves have switched back to Nokia's defaults.

Music player volume now works!

Connect to USB, send another mp3 album. PC app says (and shows on the %age bar) transferring 5 tracks. Album has 18. Nokia Music system tray icon says complete after 5, but the little arrows shows things are still being transferred. Waited for them to finish. Click the N97 icon and it's showing both albums, with all 18 tracks the second one really does have.

Disconnect USB

Go into Music library on N97, no auto refresh message. Showing only the original album with 13 tracks.

"Options
efresh library" nothing shows as scanning, just appear straight back at the artist, album, playlist option screen. Albums still shows just the first one.

Optionmusic library details says 13 tracks

Playback and volume still work.

Using the file manager, mass storage, music there's my 2nd artist, the album, and all the mp3 files. I can click them and play them. Volume still works.

Select original (found) album, select delete. Everything shows 0, even though 2nd album is there in the mass memory, file mgr shows it. First artist and albums folders are still there, but empty (Nice house keeping Nokia).

Reconnect USB, Nokia Music just shows the "invisible" 2nd album, and will play it.

Pick a 3rd album of 11 tracks... Send that to N97.. No progress bar or anything shown, just wait for the arrows to stop flashing and then confirm N97 is showing two albums (the invisible on and new one) on the PC app.

Disconnect USB.

Back on the N97... Apps, Music.. Says Music Library 11 songs (that's the 3rd album)... Go into it..

Albums (no songs)

All songs (no songs)

Artists: The artist from 3rd album is shown... 11 songs!

Click it... Shows the album name, 11 songs.

Click the album, and click the first track to play it... Long delay of a few seconds...

Starts playing... Volume not working again!

Try refresh library... again, nothing, no progress bar...

No change, no volume control.

Now here's the really weird bit... If I go and find the mp3 file on the mass storage, and play it from there, volume control works! Come back through the music play app, play the same track, volume won't work.

*#7780# - soft reset

Welcome message, yeah yeah... Ooooh, very fast confirmation text message...

Apps, Music, Music Library (11 songs), go into that, click Albums.... "Cannot perform whilst USB connected" **bleep**?I disconnected that ages ago when i said I did. After that every attempt to go into Albums dumps me back to the Music app showing "Last player - blank" "Music Library 11" etc etc...

Exit all the way out and try to go back in...Artists does the "USB connected" error. Albums just dumps me out. Playlists says "File corrupt". All songs say "(no songs)". Podcasts and Genres say "USB connected", composers "General system error" and after that I get a couple of other system errors from other options and then it just dumps me back out.

*#7780# - soft reset

Ovi welcome... blah blah...

Apps, music, music library (11 songs), go into it, option
efresh... Ooooh, something happens, a progress bar! 18 files added! That's 3rd album...

Albums show both... Artists show both

Pick one for playback... Volume control is back!

Right... Time to try a different tack...

Connect USB, mass storage mode this time (all previous attempts have been PC suite mode).

Create a now folder in music for the artist name (as stored in ID3 tag), create subfolder in that for the Album name (as stored in ID3). Copy mp3 files.

Eject USB device, wait for windows to confirm... It does.

Disconnect USB cable.

AppmusicMusic Library (29 songs - Thats the two previous albums). Go into it, previous tracks shown, playback/volume okay.

Refresh library works again... Now 3 albums, volume works.

Back to USB (mass storage mode).

This time deliberately doing the storage structure wrong... musicalbumnamemp3s (normally musicartistalbumnamemp3s).

Music library still showing the 48 tracks from the first 3 albums... Seems to open a bit slower... Still works though.

Refresh library... 13 files added...

4 albums... All working...

Looking with file mgr from badly arranged folder is still as I made it... I guess the Nokia Music PC app creates the tree format, and the N97 doesn't actually need it.

Okay, proof of pudding test...

Connect via USB (mass storage).

Delete the album I created with the mangled folder structure.

Copy 20 folders of mp3 albums across using just windows file manager to the mass storage drive's music folder.

Eject USB storage device from windows....

Oh... Up until now I was almost certain I would be able to use N97 as an MP3 player as long as I avoided the Nokia Music PC app...

AppsMusicmusic library shows 61 songs, which is what it had...

Go into it, click albums and I'm getting the USB device connected message. It's not, and the icon isn't even showing on the phone, so I can't go into the player to see if volume works.

Refresh isn't displaying anything, or doing anything I can see. Playlists say the file is corrupt...

*#7780# - Soft reset

AppsMusicmusic library (61 songs).. go in, "Repairing corrupted library. Searching for music and podcasts"

After a little while... 2 hundred and something found...

Yup, all there...

Guess what...

Volume control is screwed again!

Manually telling it to scan for new tracks doesn't do anything.

*#7780# - Soft reset

AppsMusicmusic library (276 songs)... Go in "Repairing corrupted library....."

2 seconds later "Search complete 0 file(s) added"

All albums there, still no volume control.

Okay, that enough... No more...

Hopefully that is enough to give Nokia a clue as to what is wrong, and may I just make a slight suggestion.

TEST WITH MORE THAN HALF A DOZEN TRACKS YOU

I'm off to buy a 7lb club hammer.

Nokia :: N97 Music Player - Loading Time
I am having issues with the loading times on the N97 music player app - just to open up the songs list can take 30 to 40 seconds. Admittedly I have 2916 tracks on there but then again it has the storage capacity for more. I was planning on replacing the ipod with the N97 for this very reason but if the loading times continue I doubt I will.

This loading time btw is not just the first occasion you go into app its almost every occasion. Even when selecting a track - playing it and going back the load time is still 30 seconds plus.

Now the question arises that is this because of the app or is it simply due to the fact nokia put a processor in this potentially wonderful device that is 2 years old (or more) instead of something decent and up to date.

Nokia :: N97 Music Player - Faulty Icons
I seem to have exhausted the internet in looking for a solution.

Basically the music player short cut icon on the desktop(?) AND the 'last played' icon in the player do not work. What this leads to is if I start playing a song and move away from that playing page I cannot get back and switch off the music!

I have tried re-installing the firmware but to no avail.

Nokia :: N97 Music Player Back Button
I posted the following at http://howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1616020. Discussion starts at post #16 in this thread.

============

some of us want a phone that has clear conversations, others want seamless bluetooth integration, even others want powerful web browsing and in my case, i want nokia to restore the music player interface regarding the back button to be restored to the way it was pre-v20.

as far as i can gather from the short time i've been on howardforums, it seems like this is as good a place to express frustrations about such items as these, wouldn't you say?

now, i do appreciate the input of those who suggested that this may have to do with having the mp widget on the main screen. i tried it and it definitely still happens even if i remove the mp widget and go from the music player icon.

So now the sequence is:

1. start music player -> get to music menu
2. choose music library
3. select artists (as an example)
4. scroll to the chose artist - so if you have 50 artists and looking for rick astley you have to kinetic a few times up and down before finding him
5. now you have to choose an album -- out of the 15 you may have of him -- more scrolling
6. now you have to scroll through the songs
7. pick song #12 let's say

So far so good, you're rick rolling yourself away to Never Gonna Give You Up and get out to the main menu somehow so you can do other things.

Now you decide that that was awesome but you want to hear Together Forever on his same Greatest Hits album. You'd think that going to the Now Playing screen, you could somehow just back out and get to the last list of songs -- Like on any other mp3 player I know. I've never used an iPhone but I bet you that's what you get on an iPhone.

Nope, Nokia decided that what you want is to browse your entire catalog again. So you have a choice from the Now Playing screen: either you get the menu and choose Go To Music Library and start from step #3 above or you have to start from #1 just to get to the same fricking list you *are* already on.

N97 v12 did not do this, the N95 did not do this, the N82 did not do this, the N900 does not do this (actually the N900 has the song list on the now playing screen which is nice) so who the f*ck at Nokia decided this was a great "improvement" that they needed to put in and then needed to keep?

So I understand that to some of you guys this is not a big deal. Good on you. It does not mean that it's not a problem so please spare us the give me a breaks and the what's the big deal. Some of the issues you find incredibly important might not resonate with others. It certainly does not mean it's not important to you does it?

Nokia :: N97 Music Player Hides After Opening A Song
Since the v2 update for N97, I have a problem with the music player. Imagine that I'm listening a track. When I try to open another song from the same album and hit Back button, the music player hides itself and all I see is the waiting screen. So I open the music player again, hit options and click "go to music library" and find my way thru the same album. This is really annoying. Is there a way to change this "hide" setting? My other question is not phone related. I've been wondering if there's a video conversion program which supports ATi Stream Technology. If I were using an Nvidia card I could go with Badaboom but since I'm not, I have to stick with other solutions (if there is of course). I tried Cyberlink PowerDirector 8 which can use hardware acceleration but I can't specify the settings for N97. I tried iPhone/iPod profiles (which is exactly the same with N97) but the phone can't play those videos. I have Format Factory for CPU encoding but I need to do it with a GPU enabled software.

Nokia :: N97 Music Player Continuously Searching For Songs
I have a N97 running firmware v.21.0.045 and about a week or so ago I was forced to do the hard reset because the phone became so unstable. I left my E: drive (the mass storage) intact including all of my songs, videos and pictures I had stored.Everything seems to be okay apart from the Music Player which everytime I use it it starts to search for songs and podcasts continuously. I can stop that and it lists all of my music and can play them but the volume control does not work, either from the telephone or the earpiece supplied.I have tried leaving it searching for hours but nothing changes - it just keeps on searching. Any suggestions as to how I can fix this please or does it mean I have to do another reset of the telephone? It all worked before.

Nokia :: N97 Bad Music Player - Difference Between V20 And V21
Can anyone tell me the changes of the music player made in firmware version 21.0.045 compared to version 20.0.019?

All the changes logs I can find say music player improvements but I can't find any.

The difference between v20 and the version before that ware obvious.

Improvements like the back button going back to the home screen instead of the music list you ware coming from.

The removal of the search function in portrait mode, you can only search songs with the hardware keyboard, so no portrait touchscreen keyboard search. (very annoying when using a car dashboard stand).

And they ruined the search function all together. Now I can only search on the first word of a song, album or artiste. First I was able to search just a (part of a)word and all songs containing that word in the title would be found. I have almost 1500 songs on my N97 with only 1/3 of 32GB used. How can the expect me to remember all first words of about 4500 songs!

And all the album art in the lists, which makes for less songs on the screen at once. I don't like that very much, but that's just me I guess.

So overall the made an ok music player into an annoying player ware bey I have to remember way to much to use it properly

Of course I hoped that v21 would bring some positive chances to the music player, but I cant find any. Can Anyone tell me the changes, if any. Or are they all under the hood? But I haven't noticed any performance boosts either.

Nokia :: N97 - Songs Visible In The Download List - Not In The Music Player
I am using the Comes with Music Application on the N97 itself.

I managed to download 40+ songs without a problem.

However,  when I downloaded an album with over 40 songs at one go, only 20 songs managed to download without issue, while the remaining 20 songs are still visible in the download list (shows complete), but not in the Music Player.

Initially all the previously downloaded songs were automatically removed from the download list.

But for these 20 songs, they were not removed.

I can open the song from the download list, and it plays without issue, but when I try to delete it (from the download list), the phone returns a "file not found" message.

I have since reset my phone, but to no avail.

Nokia :: N97 - Music Player - When Files Are Copied And I Refresh The Library - Unresponsive
I have an unbranded NAM N97.  I just updated my firmware to v 20.2.019.  Now I am having serious problems with the music player.  When files are copied and I refresh the library, the N97 becomes unresponsive,  No keys will work including the power key.  The battery must be removed to reset the phone.  So I tried to use WMP and Nokia Music to sync files.  This works, but only if I sync a limited number of files at a time.  If I sync 20 or more songs, WMP and Nokia Music both report that the device is going slow and sync has been aborted.  The phone is hung if you try to hit anything on it.

Things that have been tried so far:

1. Deletion of the private music player files to force a refresh.  Result: Hangs on refresh

2. Format of the E: drive.  Result: Refresh works on the freshly formatted drive.  Copying non-DRMed tracks will result in a hang on refresh.  Syncing files works until the unit hangs from syncing too many files.  After hang the library shows something like "21 songs 2 Hours", but the list is blank.

3. Hard Reset *#7870# with formatting the E: drive.  Result: same as formatting of the E: drive.  Device hangs on library refresh or sync with excessive number of files.

I have tried hunting through the files looking for something corrupted.  I took to using WMP to rip a CD to use as my test files just to be sure that nothing was amiss.  No matter what I try I end up with the same lock up/unresponsive device that requires the removal of the battery to reset.

Nokia :: N97 - Any Opinion On Alternative Handsets?
I had been really looking forward to upgrading my N95 8gb to an N97 but it seems that Orange in the UK have decided to ban it (they did it to the N96 too). They report the problem being software related and that there have been major issues with the uk version of the handset. I know that orange put their own firmware on their badged handsets and wondered if that was the issue.

My concern is that I don't want to start a new contract through a reseller if the phone ends up being dodgy and I have to deal with Nokia instead of orange customer care as their repair/replace policy is very good. Does anyone have any opinion on this or alternative handsets? Orange recommend the N86 or E71 or E75 instead but they all seem radically different.
