IPhone :: Signal Strength Bars Replaced By Negative Number
Jul 1, 2009
I've managed to replace my signal strength bars by a negative number. However, I don't know how to get back to the signal strength bars. After reading an article, "Bugs & Fixes: iPhone 3GS signal strength oddities" in MacWorld I went into Field Test mode on my iPhone. Here is what I did:
WARNING: Once you replace your signal strength bars you may not be able to get them back. The "more accurate numerical indicator" is much more accurate but not quite as easy to see. You've been warned.
Quoting from the article by Ted Landau of Macworld:
"Finally, at least for AT&T phones, you can get a more accurate numerical indicator of the iPhoneís current signal strength by manually dialing *3001#12345#* followed by a tap of the Call button."
I did this from an original 8G iPhone. However when I got my new 3GS 32G iPhone and restored from my Mac the new "more accurate numerical indicator" feature loaded along with my data.
I am getting call failed messages with two or three bars on my 3gs. the field test numbers show a signal strength of -99 to -113. i have read anything worse than -100 can drop calls. if you are getting call hangups are your numbers similar? I thought the IPhone would switch to edge in the middle of a call if the signal gets weak field test thread - http://www.howardforums.com/showthre...readid=1400288
Enable Signal strength numbers instead of Bars.Run Field test mode by typing.*3001#12345#*.Click Home button to enable backgrounder then using SBsettings turn off field test. You will keep the Signal strength numbers and can change it to bars by clicking it. Even after you reboot your phone.
I was wondering if anyone knows what algorithm is used for the signal bars on the Photon 4G. I have found that there seems to be no correlation between the signal strength (in dBm / asu) in Settings -> About phone -> Status and the signal bars that are shown. Often the signal bars will shoot from 1 to 5 or 6 even with really low signal ( ~97 to > 100 dBm) that doesn't fluctuate.
I know we have discussed this in the past, and the search function on the board isn't working right for me now, or I would just find the old post that way. what is the process for changing the signal strength bars from bars to numbers on the 3G?
I need help getting cell tower reception on my phone. Using China Unicom as Network Carrier. I am located in Guangzhou China (a major metropolis). The problem is not with the SIM Card itself because it has been tested and placed in other phones & it works well. Reception Bars fluctuate between 0-2 bars at most, both in and outdoors.Have noticed these problems since upgrading the phone to IOS 5.0 & now also on 5.1.1. No problem with Wi-Fi Networks. I have also tried Resetting the Network & taking out the SIM Card and putting it back in, but this has not helped.

I have an iPhone 2G unlocked with 3.1.2 running on T-Mobile. I just got it a few days ago. I've noticed that since I got it, it's had really bad signal, the bars are usually down to 1-3 at home (usually 3 or 2) and, while this annoyed me, it didn't bother me much cause it stilled worked. However, at school I've noticed my signal is actually down to 0 at times and in one specific class, stays at the 0-1 bar and constantly disconnects saying No Service.
The first week i had my iPhone 4, i had about 1 bar.Right now i am having 3 bars which is what i usually get and sometimes 5 bars which never happened with my iPhone 3G.I heard that AT&T is enhancing their signal strength because of the overflow of the new iPhone 4 which could make sense but what about you?
i have very poor signal with my brand new iphone 4s that i only got yesterday on a contract, improve my signal, as my iphine is normally in NO SERVICE! would i be able to send it back to apple or something?
Anyone else experience this? I did th sotware upgrade and a few hours later this happened. I tried manually connecting to the network and it wont. T-mobile asked me to send the phone back but there is a major scratch on the screen so they told me my return warranty was void now.So far I have a $400 paper weight. Anyone fix this issue?
If anyone is still having problems with the signal strength, try turning off 3G and Location via Settings section. I constantly had only 1-2 bars, but once turning them off my signal has improved massively; now getting 5 bars 90% of the time. I reckon it is more 3G affecting the signal, but try with both off just to be sure. If it works, then turn on 3G only when needed.
I have my 3G, and notice that my WiFi signal depletes down to 1 bar, even though the phone is right beside my Linksys 310N router. I thought this might just be the phone, until I also got an 8gb 3G on V2.2.1, no SIM, which is picking up someone's router using WiFinder / WiFi Checker application that only has a 2 signal strength, yet has all 3 WiFi bars lit up.
I am using a new I phone 4s on Straight Talk and I have only 1 to 2 bars maximum anywhere I go and then it will have no service at all.I was a previous verizon customer and had 4 to 5 sitting in my home now I have 1 or 2 and if I walk around sometimes goes to no service at all. Verizon did not have service everywhere I went but that was in hilly areas as I live in central Illinois and have talked to others with AT&T and they are getting better service than this as that is what towers Straight Talk uses. I am getting a Gel bumper cover and have already tried the black tape it did not help. It says I have 4 G sitting in house but cannot make a call and the 4G goes in and out also.
Well I have found a way to easily switch your signal bars on your status bar from regular bars to db's and back whenever you want. Well I'm on the latest beta of 4.1 (8b5097d) on IPhone 4 and it does have feild test (maby it's just because I restored from my 3GS but idk). So go to your phone app and then to the keypad. Then type *3001#12345#* and press call, this will put u in field test app. At the top I can tap the bars and it will switch to db's and if tapped again it will go back. So once u tap to change to db's hold the sleep button till slide to power pops up then let go of the sleep button and hold the home button (this is a respiring). Once u do that u can just easily tap the bars or db's and switch where ever you are in your phone. Good luck hope it works on all your phones. And ps you don't need to be jailbroken!
I'm using iPhone 5s (32GB) on a 4G network in Singapore.
Ever since I upgraded my firmware to iOS 8 and later, among other frustrations like battery drain, I'm also facing a significant drop/fluctuation in the network signal strength, home WiFi signal, and the Bluetooth range.¬
I'm unable to stream videos like I used to on Cellular Data. I used to get (when the phone ran on iOS 7.1.2) all 5 bars most of the time even inside the lift/elevator, but now it switches to un-browsable (don't know why) 3G mode even at the heart of the city.¬
I got an IPhone from a guy that used Ziphone to attempt to unlock it. Anyway, he said it would no longer read his SIM after that. So when I got it I when ahead and restored it and use winpwn to jailbreak it at version 2.02. However now it shows no bars for signal. I read somewhere to try a restore with 1.1.4 and go from there?
I have been having this problem a lot since I got the phone. If I am out especially in building where it shows good signal it take it forever to load data. text goes through fine but data takes forever. Much slower than my 3GS why is this? Is it my phone or are others getting this?
I received my iPhone 4 on launch day via a pre-order. I am very grateful to have it and to have received it while others still try to get one. Anyway, onto the issue. I had signal drop issues from the get go, occasionally even a few dropped calls. Per Apple's statement and other blog recommendations I bought a case to alleviate the issue. It's the Griffin Reveal. It is a nice case too. Last night I noticed low signal bars after a dropped call and realized I was holding it over the left corner. I let go and up went the bars.
I called care. They opened a case # and gave me the same as anyone else. I was told that I needed a bumper to fix the issue, that they couldn't guarentee with any third party case it would fix the issue. I responded asking why I should give another $30 to fix an issue they know about. I asked if I would recieve and email or call to follow up and they said they didn't know. I will follow up in 2 days and let you know. Is this a ploy to just get people to spend more money? 1.7 million sold in three days x $30 for a bumper = $51 million more for.
